We arrived just in time for their beer special. It was a late afternoon trip to Charlie's Brewhouse and what a beautiful afternoon it was not. The sun was just about to set over the harbour and the beer was flowing; what more could you ask for?
It was a long day's driving up and down the coast, and we settled for the night in this excellent pub on the West Coast of South Africa.
The sign was a sure sign for me, buy 500 ml draft to get another 300 ml draft for free.
So, please join me on this virtual journey to this stunning pub, where we enjoyed a pint or three, ate some delicious sea food, and where we really just enjoyed life anew.
The Brewhouse
The brewery is situated in a harbour that offers beautiful sunset views. We arrived just before sunset and the photograph above is a testament to the beauty of the setting.
The brewery itself is beautiful, and modern, displaying various little quirks, such as various posters or old movies and music album covers. I really enjoyed this little touch to detail.
The Beers
My trusty beer passport led me to the brewery; if I did not have this handy little friend with me, I would never have heard of this place.
The brewery has various beers on tap, from stout, to blonde, to IPA and what they call SAPA or a South African Pale Ale.
I could not help myself, so I had a couple of pints; the stout, the SAPA, and the IPA. It was flower season, so they called the one beer a wild flower ale, however, and sadly, there were no wild flowers in the beer!
Nonetheless, their beers were amazing, and their IPA was one of the best I had in a while. It was nothing fancy, nothing close to the floral or fruity hopped beers, but it was also not overpowering and too hopped. It was just a smooth and easy drinking IPA that hit all of the notes, a balance between hops and malts.
I bought a couple of fourpacks, to say the least...
But next door, they also have their own distillery, where they make their own gins. So, on tap, they have their own gin and tonics! For those who do not like beer, this is the go-to.
The Seafood from a Bar
The west coast of South Africa is known for its fish. We could not help but order some of these delicious treats. A classic must is West Coast mussels, and the other dish was squid heads.
The Distillery Next Door
It only struck me when I walked into the distillery; Charlie's Brewhouse is an homage to Charlie Chapman! I was a bit slow, but after seeing the poster in the distillery, and then seeing the logo of the beers, it hit me like a rock.
My fiance and my mother could not help themselves, and they bought a couple of the different gins they had to offer. We just made it in time, as the owner almost wanted to lock up. Lucky for us, he was extremely friendly and let us into his shop.
I bought too much beer, the ladies bought too much gin, and we were all very happy about this opportunity!
Postscriptum, or Walking to the Car
As we walked to the car, we saw the beautiful lights that lit the distillery in the night. It was a really beautiful yet small and insignificant detail that just made the place even better.
In the end, we really enjoyed the evening and what the brewery had to offer. From excellent food to great beers, we could not ask for anything more.
I hope that you enjoy your travels, and that you have some cold beers in the fridge!
Safe travels.
All of the musings and writings are my own, albeit inspired by the beautiful beers they had to offer. The photographs were taken with my Nikon D300.
