This is the first time I’m writing for BEER, but my intention is clear: to leave a small preamble and some clues about my trip to the Morrocoy National Park. This is a secret between you and me. It is absolutely forbidden to tell another Venezuelan that the taste of traveling to the beach is in drinking a good Zulia beer.
Polar beer is outdated. Aside from the fact that it’s harmful, it’s still the most popular. I’ve opted to drink Zulia beer, although I don’t particularly like being reminded that it’s made by the Maracuchos (Maracucho is the term used for people from Zulia, the now-defunct cosmopolitan and oil-rich Venezuelan state).
My intention is not to talk about history; that would be boring. Let me summarize: each of the photographs has something special. They reflect the beauty of Venezuelan coastlines, even more beautiful than a trip to the Maldives (I haven’t been there, but our coastlines and islands are more beautiful). It’s a secret that we Venezuelans have and should show to the world. Appreciating it, I feel that despite the complexity, everything is changing. To enjoy the view and this magnificent place, I had to do it with a good Zulia beer.
Zulia beer has a unique and characteristic taste of the Venezuelan palate. I’m referring to the fact that it tastes like malt (malt is a non-alcoholic Venezuelan drink often consumed with tequeños, empanadas, and arepas). Venezuelan things, you’ll understand me, please! (a couple of local idioms here). Any self-respecting Venezuelan knows that Zulia beer tastes like malt, hahaha.
If you go to one of the islands in the Morrocoy National Park, you must undoubtedly go with your box of beers. You can’t go without beer; how do you enjoy the sea, the sun, and the sunset without refreshing yourself?
I’m not a person who drinks many beers, but I respect myself, and because I respect myself, I know I should enjoy each adventure as a good guy with a little beer (I switched to a diminutive mode, hahaha). Don’t misinterpret: I’m not drunk yet. I just love writing so freely and loving these kinds of things.
In Venezuela, it’s common to collect money from everyone to buy a box of beers. We call this: “make the cow” (literally: “making the cow”). The one who doesn’t contribute money is a cheapskate (we say “agarrao” without the "d" to emphasize that the person is being tight-fisted).
I don’t know why they don’t loosen up; you have to “cut the mattress” (caleta means saving money, and you already know what’s coming – they put the money in the mattress where they sleep, hahaha). There’s the money!

As you can see, I’m on a boat drinking my Zulia beer; you can’t move around too much there. If you move, that thing tips over, and you’re floating, holding on to the life jacket. An interesting thing is that we forgot the cooler at home, and we didn’t stay at a place before traveling. My uncle had to come up with a solution, like any good Venezuelan, we have inventive minds. He bought a bag, filled it with ice, and put it in a box in the car. Buying a cooler before the trip wasn’t an option, as it cost 5 boxes of beer. A case of beer is worth 20 USD, (or HBD).
In the end, the best part of this experience is that you have to be singing on the boat, feeling the peace, letting the wind brush your face, and with a beer in your hand, thanking that you’re alive. Enjoying the opportunity that life has given you to be here, taking an unknown trip that will surprise you. I tell myself this, now I imagine that I’m drunk.

Es la primera vez que escribo en BEER, pero mi intención es clara: dejar un pequeño preámbulo y algunas pistas de mi viaje al Parque Nacional Morrocoy. Esto es un secreto entre tú y yo. Queda absolutamente prohibido decirle a otro venezolano que el sabor de viajar a la playa está en tomarte una buena cerveza Zulia.
La cerveza Polar está pasada de moda. Aparte de que hace daño, aunque sigue siendo la más popular. Yo he optado por tomar cerveza Zulia, aunque no me gusta mucho que me recuerden que fue hecha por los maracuchos (maracucho es la expresión que se usa para llamar a las personas que viven en Zulia, el extinto estado cosmopolita y petrolero venezolano).
Mi intención no es hablar de historia; sería aburrido. Recapitulo: cada una de las fotografías tiene algo especial. Reflejan la belleza de las costas venezolanas, incluso más bellas que un viaje a las islas Maldivas (no he ido, pero nuestras costas e islas son más bellas). Es un secreto que nosotros, los venezolanos, tenemos y debemos mostrar al mundo. Apreciarlo, siento que, a pesar de la complejidad, todo va cambiando. Para disfrutar de la vista y de este magnífico lugar, debía hacerlo con una buena cerveza Zulia.
La cerveza Zulia tiene un sabor único y característico del paladar venezolano. Me refiero al hecho de que sabe a malta (la malta es una bebida venezolana no alcohólica que se suele consumir con los tequeños, empanadas y arepas). Vainas de venezolanos, ¡tú me entenderás, por favor! (un par de modismos aquí). El venezolano que se respeta sabe que la cerveza Zulia sabe a malta, jajajajaja.
Si vas a una de las islas en el Parque Nacional Morrocoy, debes, sin lugar a dudas, hacerlo acompañado de tu cajita de cervezas. La cerveza no puede faltar, ¿cómo disfrutas el mar, el sol y el atardecer sin refrescarte?
Yo no soy una persona que toma muchas cervezas, pero me respeto, y como me respeto, sé que debo disfrutar cada aventura como un buen chico acompañado de una cervecita (entré en modo diminutivo, jajajaja). No malinterpretes: aún no estoy borracho. Solamente me encanta escribir tan libremente y amar este tipo de cosas.
En Venezuela es usual recolectar dinero entre todos para comprar una caja de cervezas. A esto lo llamamos: “Hacer la vaca”. El que no pone plata es un agarrado (nosotros decimos agarrao sin la "d" para reflejar que el que no pone es un pichirre).
No sé por qué no sueltan la caleta; hay que echarle cuchillo al colchón (caleta es que está guardando plata y lo demás ya lo sabes, mete el dinero en el colchón donde duerme, jajajaja). ¡Ahí está el dinero!
Como se puede ver, voy en lancha tomando mi cerveza Zulia; ahí no se puede mover mucho uno. Si te mueves, se voltea esa vaina y quedas flotando por el salvavidas. Algo interesante es que se nos quedó la hielera en nuestra casa y tampoco nos hospedamos antes de viajar. Mi tío tuvo que resolver como todo buen venezolano, tenemos mentes ingeniosas. Compró una bolsa, la llenó de hielo y la colocó en una caja en el carro. Comprar una hielera antes de viajar no era una opción, ya que valía 5 cajas de cervezas. Una caja de cervezas vale 20 USD, (o HBD).
En fin, lo mejor de esta experiencia es que debes ir cantando en la lancha, sentir la paz, que el viento roce tu cara y, con la cerveza en la mano, agradecer que estás vivo. Disfrutando la oportunidad que te ha dado la vida de estar aquí haciendo un viaje desconocido que te sorprenderá. Esto me lo digo, ahora sí me imagino que estoy borracho.
