Hello Hivians and all you beer lovers.
Today we are sampling an Italian beer in an Italian restaurant for #beersaturday.
Birrificio Angelo Poretti
Food and drink
The drink in question was what was written on the name of the glass.
Poretti is a historic Italian brewery that was founded in 1877 by Angelo Poretti in Valganna, near Varese.
It draws on over a century of brewing tradition.
I am not going to dwell on the food. Suffice to say every dish was fluffing amazing and I gave them excellent scores in my grading of the restaurant. Yes this was another freebie!
Token food shot
The actual beer was served in a pint glass.
Sometimes I don't believe these are pint glasses as they look small but it is indeed a pint glass.
The cost ...
Can you guess? Being that it was a restaurant and in the centre of Edinburgh ...
£6 which I thought was pretty good value. Still a rip off but unfortunately that is the going rate nowadays!
We got there between lunch and dinner yesterday which was a great time, our service was awesome!
Poretti is widely seen as a well-crafted, distinctive Italian lager that balances a refreshing crispness with a more complex, hoppy, and aromatic flavor profile than many of its counterparts, making it a versatile and enjoyable beer, particularly with food.
I am not really a big lager fan. But it is cold and it is alcohol, so what more do you want lol!
I can safely say that I have tasted a whole heck of a lot worse lagers than Poretti.
I don't rate any better than good old fashioned Scottish Tennent's lager that's for sure.
If you sold Tennent's in fancy glasses with a poncy name then I am sure it would be a hit,
Loch Lomond Blurb
I wanted to see what other people thought of it ...
Common Descriptions of Poretti Beer
Full-Flavored Italian Lager: It's consistently referred to as a premium Italian lager that offers a more pronounced flavor than some other mass-market lagers. Not sure I agree with that ... premium? A lager is a lager to me!
Crisp and Refreshing: Many emphasize its refreshing taste and crispness, making it a popular choice for hot weather or as a palate cleanser. Now I totally dig the palate cleanser, as it cleansed my palate between courses.
Balanced Hoppy Bitterness: A key characteristic is its balanced hoppy bitterness, which is more assertive than typical lagers but not overwhelmingly bitter like some IPAs. This comes from its unique blend of four hop varieties ("quattro luppoli"). I can't argue with that but I did not find it particularly hoppy!
Smooth with a Clean Finish: Reviewers often note a smooth body and a clean, polished finish, sometimes with a dry aftertaste. There was no aftertaste for me, and I have to admit it was a clean glass!
Aromatic and Fruity Notes: Beyond just bitterness, people pick up on aromatic, citrusy, and sometimes floral or fruity notes from the hops and a pleasant malty sweetness in the body, with hints of bread or hay. I would say perhaps aromatic notes but no real fruity notes to me!
Pillowy White Head and Brilliant Clarity: Visually, it's described as having a clear, golden appearance topped with a fine, pillowy white head. Yeah will go with that!
Food-Friendly: A recurring theme is its design to complement food and dining experiences. It's often suggested for pairing with Italian cuisine like pizza, pasta with light sauces, cheeses, charcuterie, and even richer dishes like crispy duck. This aligns with its place in Italian "aperitivo" culture. I totally agree with this, it went really well with all the food we had, which included pizza, pasta, cheese and cheesecakes!
Thank you my gemini for providing those common descriptions of what people say!
