I planned to go over the highlights from last week's Fat Pack, but a stop at my friendly local game store led to an impulse purchase of a Strixhaven: School of Mages pack. You can see the set catalogue here, or check out the photos below to see what I pulled.
Remember that Golgari deck I was working on a while back? it has been revised since then, and The Gitrog Monster will be moving to another deck entirely. That other deck will also likely gain the Moldering Karok and Tangletrap cards.
I don't quite understand the role of these new lesson cards like Expanded Anatomy. I think from the text on another card that they are meant to exist outside the deck as a separate source of cards to be used when triggered by the Learn effect on other cards.
Detention Vortex is underwhelming, but a very cheap way to temporarily lock something down. Necrotic Fumes might be decent removal against big creatures and planeswalkers, but it needs cheap fodder. Divide by Zero is the same cost, but it bounces instead of exiling. However, it also replaces itself with the Learn ability. Maybe it's better?
I got two rares. One is Exponential Growth, which has potential to make something really overpowered. This also will go into my planned deck with The Gitrog Monster.
Growth Spiral is also joining that new deck. That's right. The monster isn't the commander, and I will also be including blue. Mwahahahahaha! Ramp, death, graveyard shenanigans and blue tomfoolery to boot! Expect a deck list eventually.
As for this pack, I think this set would be fun to draft, but maybe not a high value for speculators. These rares aren't high value cards monetarily, so it's a good thing they fit my deck plans.
