I never imagined being among the Top 10 Finalists of THE OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD 2025—a prestigious award recognizing exceptional students from Bacolod City and across Negros Province. A year ago, I was observing my senior student leader meticulously crafting her bid book. Intrigued, I learned it was for the THOS (The Outstanding Student) award. It was my first encounter with this prestigious competition. I didn't inquire further until the results were announced. She was among the seven finalists, earning the Best in Community Service award. The fact that seven students were selected during a pandemic highlighted the exceptional nature of their achievements.
Jokingly, I declared, "Next year, I'll enter that competition—representing my department and institution!" Unbeknownst to me, the Director of Student Affairs and Services overheard my comment. This marked the beginning of my increased involvement in various activities, both within and outside the school community. I embraced the opportunities, discovering a passion for volunteerism and community service.
The time arrived to prepare my own bid book as one of three representatives from our school. Sleepless nights, intense cramming, and self-doubt became my constant companions. The looming deadline added to the pressure. Thankfully, an extension was granted, providing some much-needed breathing room as I was still far from completing my bid book.
Finally, the submission day arrived. We submitted our bid books on time. I prayed earnestly, asking God that if I wasn't selected, I wouldn't harbor any jealousy towards those who were. Whatever God's plan, I vowed to accept it wholeheartedly.
Then, one day, the JCI (Junior Chamber International) sent a message: I was selected as one of the Top 10 Finalists! From a pool of over 30 participants, I was among the elite ten. I was completely overwhelmed; I couldn't believe it. I had received more than I'd dared to pray for.
While I didn't win the top prize or receive a trophy, being among the Top 10 Finalists is an immense privilege. The journey itself has been transformative. It's taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of community engagement, and the power of believing in oneself, even when faced with self-doubt. The experience has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and a renewed commitment to serving others. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this prestigious competition and for the support I received along the way. This experience will forever shape my future endeavors and inspire me to continue striving for excellence in all that I do. The lessons learned and the connections made will remain invaluable assets throughout my life. I am incredibly thankful for this incredible opportunity. The entire experience has been a humbling and rewarding journey of self-discovery and growth.
