Just recently, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines) released another sequel to the polymer banknote series following the first release of the one thousand peso bill polymer banknote in 2022. It includes the unveiling of the five hundred, one hundred, and fifty peso bill polymer banknote designs. The release draws several flocks from famous personalities and even commoners. The issue stems from removing the heroes and past Philippine presidents from the official banknotes recently released. Some even questioned the necessity of changing the design, citing that national heroes should be recognized over animals.
Moreover, another tons of concerns has been raised; one issue is the proper handling of the polymer banknote, because unlike the old paper bill folding the polymer might make it prone from ripping; another one is that according to former senator Bam Aquino, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas have to reason out why they decide to remove the the image of Philippine heroes and former presidents. He further stressed out that they (removed figures) are Filipinos worthy of emulating and should not be subjected to removal from the current banknote. On the other hand, the Bangko Central ng Pilipinas reiterated that they will not remove the old bills from the circulation, it will coexist together with the new polymer banknotes. They further stressed that the new series of polymer banknotes is a smarter, cleaner, and stronger move to reducing the carbon footprints.
In my opinon, removing the images of our national heroes and past presidents in the new polymer banknote doesn't mean disregarding their sacrifices and efforts made for the motherland. I whole heartedly respect the figures feautured on our bills, and as much as we wanted to preserve their efforts we also wanted to showcase the Philippine biodiversity through our banknotes. With the assurance of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the old banknote will continue to exist alongside the new polymer banknotes, there's nothing to worry about this. For some this is politically motivated, but for me this is purely innovation. How about you, what is your take on this issue? Comment your insights below, I would love to read your ideas.
