I've been awfully quiet here for more than a week because my sister actually got hospitalized again. She's okay now. Hopefully no more surprise hospital visits moving forward. She was discharged last Wednesday after spending six days in the hospital. She was diagnosed with severe anemia due to abnormal bleeding. She was transfused with two bags of blood and was given an anti-fibrinolytic agent to stop the bleeding. We were very scared when she collapsed three times due to severe blood loss.
For those who are wondering how she got into that situation, we are constantly monitoring her. She was actually visiting her doctor prior to the night she collapsed. She was advised to visit an OB-GYN, and we had already planned to visit the next day, but she collapsed the night before her appointment. I texted her doctor and we were advised to have her admitted immediately. Her doctor gave an order at the admitting section to have her admitted to a private room instead of going to the ER. Due to her ongoing SLE treatment, her OB couldn't immediately address the underlying cause of her abnormal bleeding, which is a thick lining in her uterus due to hormonal imbalance. It might even be a side effect of her lupus treatment. One thing is for sure: her health situation changes so fast.
Thank you to those who reached out and helped us find blood donors. We were confident at first because my brother found two, but when the doctor said she needed immediate blood transfusion because her severe anemia might cause another strain on her heart, we frantically looked for more donors because the other donor backed out and we were not sure if she's a blood match with the other one. If you remember in my previous posts about her lupus, she had a heart attack last November, so another strain on her recovering heart might be another trouble. As the doctor had said, we can't afford to have another health complication when she's still recovering and her treatment is still ongoing.
I'm amazed by how many people went to the hospital for the screening. We actually decided to halt the screening after two passed because blood screening and matching is not cheap. Those who weren't screened were told to be on standby in case there's no match. Good thing those two who were screened were a match.
I didn't post about this earlier because I didn't want to ask for help again. I believe in donor fatigue and made a decision to settle the hospital bills without asking for help. That's why I decided to withdraw all my HBD savings, accepting that I would have to borrow again to cover for her hospital bills. Her final bill is Php 55,720.42 after the PhilHealth deduction. Since she has a PWD card, it's expected to be deducted again by 20%. I was expecting to pay Php 47,000 because her health insurance was already maxed out during her last hospitalization and we were already told she's not covered anymore. Good thing it's considered a different illness, so we had hope that her bill would be covered by the insurance. She wanted to go home, but was forced to stay for another night at the hospital because of the paperwork. Her initial insurance claim was initially disapproved, so I already lost hope. It was frustrating, but I have to figure out the next steps as I believed we were on our own that time. Good thing her agent and her company refiled the claim with all the supporting documents, like the ultrasound results and they had to call her OB just to justify that it's a different illness.
In the end, it was approved. I had to pay Php 6,500.00 for the miscellaneous items on top of the other expenses at the hospital. I just made partial payments to my friends at least to lessen my debts incurred during the last hospitalization. Back to zero HBD savings, but at least my sister's okay now.
If you look at my KE ratio, you'll be disappointed. Given my current situation, I don't care anymore as long as my sister's okay. I'm trying to lessen my reliance on Hive, hence the reduced activity, because I felt I had become unhealthily obsessed with it during the four years since the pandemic began. I'm honestly tired of people telling other people how they should spend or not spend their Hive earnings. While I understand both sides, branding other users as "leeching off of Hive" without understanding their socioeconomic status is simply elitist and callous. I'm not going to argue with anyone about this because aren't we all mining Hive? Anyway, I'm still hopeful that Hive's time will come.
I'm actively looking for a second job to supplement my earnings because everything I earned is not enough for her medications. Considering how volatile her health is, I can't afford to be penniless in case of another emergency. I'm slowly weaning my time here and have been focusing more on Worldmappin. In the meantime, I'll try to post more often. For those who will ostracize me for my choices or won't support me anymore, I won't blame you. I'm just not in the luxury to be taking the "virtuous" path anymore. My sister's health takes precedence over everything that I do here.
