Pensé que el Real Madrid iba a utilizar muchos jugadores secundarios que no suelen pasar mucho tiempo en el campo. Esperaba ver a Jovic como delantero en lugar de Benzema, y también esperaba ver a algunos jugadores jóvenes prometedores de las divisiones inferiores del Real Madrid como Blanco, Arribas y Marvin.

Los jugadores del Real Madrid probablemente estaban muy relajados creyéndose mucho mejores y capaces de conseguir una victoria fácil, pero si el fútbol actual algo ha dejado claro una y otra vez, es que no hay partido fácil, y cualquier equipo, por muy pequeño que sea, puede vencer a cualquier equipo grande.
La falta de gol que empezaron a sufrir los madridistas en su último partido siguió presente en la primera parte. No importa cómo intenten atacar, sus tiros siempre van directo al portero o fuera de la red. Sheriff tuvo la suerte de anotar un buen cabezazo alrededor de los 25 minutos en la primera mitad, sus movimientos de ataque fueron básicos pero correctos, centraron el balón al área y había un jugador del Sheriff solo dentro del área sin un jugador defensivo cubriéndolo. Dio un cabezazo y se fue directo adentro sin posibilidad de que el portero lo detuviera.
Creo que ese gol fue un error defensivo de Alaba y Gutiérrez porque el cabezazo fue en su zona. Ambos jugadores son geniales, pero en esa jugada en particular, no estaban bien posicionados.
Ese gol fue un poco como un shock para el Real Madrid. Jugaban en su estadio, contra un equipo pequeño, y estaban perdiendo el partido. La mayoría de la gente habría esperado que el Real Madrid ganara este partido por una diferencia de 2 o 3 goles. Incluso empatar contra Sheriff sería un fracaso, y en ese momento, estaban perdiendo.
Tras el gol, el Real Madrid se volvió mucho más activo e intenso en su juego de ataque. Aún quedaban muchos minutos por jugar y tiempo más que suficiente para empatar y ganar este partido. El problema para el Real Madrid era que la defensa del Sheriff estaba teniendo una actuación de clase mundial y marcar un gol contra ellos no era fácil como seguramente pensaban.
La mayoría de los tiros del Real Madrid ni siquiera iban a puerta, y creo que eso es algo que tendrían que entrenar en los próximos días porque su puntería parece estar un poco errada.

Esta temporada ha mejorado mucho su puntería, sobre todo a la hora de disparar y por eso ha marcado varios goles, pero en este partido, fue como ver al viejo Vinicius de temporadas anteriores, muy eléctrico y activo pero haciendo malos pases y malos tiros. Sin embargo, Vinicius fue el mejor jugador del Real Madrid, y gracias a su habilidad individual produjo un penalti en torno al minuto 61 que, más tarde, se convertiría en gol de Benzema.
Ese fue el segundo penalti potencial producido por Vinicius en cuestión de minutos, el primero no fue falta pero el segundo sí. Ese gol sin duda fue importante para la estabilidad emocional del Real Madrid. Después de ese gol, sucedió algo importante, Ancelotti hizo 4 cambios al mismo tiempo y esta es la primera vez en esta temporada que veo esto sucediendo.
Nacho, Hazard, Gutiérrez y Casemiro salieron del terreno de juego y se fueron al banquillo, y entraron Rodrygo, Jovic, Kross y Modric. El mensaje de Ancelotti era obvio, iba en modo de ataque completo y quería lograr la victoria sin importarle nada. Esta también fue una decisión de alto riesgo porque esas sustituciones debilitaron la defensa del Real Madrid.
El Real Madrid siguió jugando los minutos restantes en el lado del campo del Sheriff y sus ataques no se detenían. Este es probablemente el partido en el que he visto a este equipo haciendo el mayor número de tiros esta temporada, tuvieron un total de 31 tiros, 11 de ellos a puerta según la estadística oficial. Eso es una locura y aún más loco es que solo lograron marcar 1 gol. Comparemos eso con los tiros del Sheriff, hicieron un total de 4 tiros con 3 de ellos a puerta y marcaron 2 goles. Esta es una de las cosas que amo del fútbol, un equipo puede dominar completamente un partido y perderlo al final.
Personalmente, no esperaba que Sheriff ganara este partido, cuando vi al Real Madrid en modo de full ataque después de las 4 sustituciones pensé que el Madrid iba a marcar otro gol y lograr su merecida victoria. Pero los minutos seguían pasando y no había gol del Madrid. Disparo tras disparo, y nada, ningún gol para el Madrid.
El partido estaba a punto de terminar y parecía que terminaría siendo un empate, pero fue entonces cuando sucedió la magia. Alrededor del minuto 89, Sheriff tuvo una de las pocas jugadas de ataque que tuvieron en el partido, el balón alcanzó a uno de sus jugadores llamado Thill justo fuera del área, y de repente hace un tiro increíble que envió el balón directamente a la esquina superior. El gol fue asombroso, completamente inesperado, y todo Sheriff estalló de felicidad. No solo fue un gol hermoso, sino que estaba cerca del final del partido, les dio la victoria y el rival era un equipo histórico.

I thought Real Madrid was going to use a lot of secondary players that don't usually spend much time on the pitch. I was expecting to watch Jovic as the striker instead of Benzema, and I was also hoping to watch some promising young players from Real Madrid's inferior divisions such as Blanco, Arribas, and Marvin.
However, Ancelotti decided to use the main players in pretty much every position. It is important to rotate the players from time to time to prevent the main ones from suffering from accumulated fatigue, but Ancelotti seems to think this isn't necessary, at least not yet.
Both teams won their first match in this tournament, so whoever won this match would be in the first position of the group for the time being.
How was the match?
The first half was dominated by Real Madrid as expected, the only thing that wasn't expected was the most important thing, the goals. Sheriff played in a very focused and intelligent way, preventing Real Madrid from doing good goal attempts, and taking advantage of Madrid's lack of focus in the defense.
Real Madrid's players were probably very relaxed believing them to be much better and capable of achieving an easy victory, but in today's football has made something clear time and time again, it is that there is no easy match, and any team, no matter how small, can beat any big team.
The lack of goal Madrid's players began to suffer in their last match was still present in the first half. No matter how they try to attack, their shots always went straight to the goalkeeper, or outside the net. Sheriff was lucky enough to score a good header around the 25-minute mark in the first half, their attacking moves were basic but correct, they crossed the ball into the area, and there was a Sheriff player alone inside the area with no defensive payer covering him. He gave a header and it went straight in with no chance for the goalkeeper to stop it.
I believe that goal was a defensive mistake of Alaba and Gutierrez because the header happened in their zone. Both of those players are great but in that particular play, they weren't properly focused.
That goal was a bit like a shock to Real Madrid. They were playing in their stadium, against a small team, and they were losing the match. Most people would have expected Real Madrid to win this match by a difference of 2 or 3 goals. Even tying against Sheriff would be a failure, and at that moment, they were losing.
After the goal, Real Madrid became much more active and intense in their attacking play. There were still a lot of minutes to play and more than enough time to tie and win this match. The problem for Real Madrid was, that Sheriff's defense was having a world-class performance, and scoring a goal against them wasn't easy as they thought.
The majority of Real Madrid's shots weren't even on target, and I believe this is something they would have to train in the coming days because their aim seems to be a bit off.
During the first half, all of Madrid's attacking players produced goal attempts, Vinicius, Hazard, Benzema, and even Valverde and Gutierrez had some shots as well. Real Madrid was the dominant team but ironically they were incapable of scoring a single goal.
The first half ended with Real Madrid in a very frustrated state and Sheriff doing whatever they could to resist and protect their victory.
Since the beginning of the second half, Real Madrid was intensively trying to produce more and more attacking plays in order to tie this match. Pretty much all of the second half was with Real Madrid playing on Sheriff's side of the pitch.
Vinicius was very active in his attacking attempts as usual, but his shots and passes weren't as good. This season he has improved his aim a lot, especially when shooting and that's why he has scored several goals, but in this match, it was like seeing the old Vinicius from previous seasons, very electric and active but delivering bad passes and bad shots. However, Vinicius was the best Real Madrid player, thanks to his individual skills, he produced a penalty around the 61-minute mark that will, later on, become a goal scored by Benzema.
That was the second potential penalty produced by Vinicius in a matter of minutes, the first one wasn't a foul but the second one was. That goal certainly was important for Real Madrid's emotional stability. After that goal, something important happened, Ancelotti did 4 substitutions at the same time and this is the first time this season I saw this happening.
Nacho, Hazard, Gutierrez, and Casemiro went off the pitch and to the bench, and Rodrygo, Jovic, Kross, and Modric went inside. Ancelotti's message was obvious, he was going full attacking mode and he wanted to achieve the victory no matter what. This was also a high-risk decision because those substitutions weakened Real Madrid's defensive side.
Real Madrid continue to play the remaining minutes on Sheriff's side of the pitch and their attacks never stopped. This is probably the match where I have seen this team making the highest number of shots this season, they had a total of 31 shots, 11 of those on target according to the official statistic. That is crazy and even crazier is that they only managed to score 1 single goal. Compare that with Sheriff's shots, they had a total of 4 shots with 3 of those on target and they scored 2 goals. This is one of the things I love about football, a team can completely dominate a match and lose it in the end.
Personally, I wasn't expecting Sheriff to win this match, when I saw Real Madrid going full attacking mode after the 4 substitutions I thought Madrid was going to score another goal, and achieve their well-deserved victory. But the minutes kept on passing, and there was no Madrid goal. Shot after shot, and nothing, no goal for Madrid.
The match was about to end, and it seemed like it would end up being a tie, but this is when the magic happened. Around the 89 minute mark, Sheriff had one of the few attacking plays they had in the match, the ball reached one of their players called Thill just outside the area, and suddenly he makes an incredible shot that sent the ball straight to the top bins. The goal was amazing, completely unexpected, and all of Sheriff exploded with happiness. It wasn't only a beautiful goal, but it was near the ending of the match, it gave them the victory and the rival was a historic team.
Real Madrid's players couldn't believe what was happening but that's just football, these surprises happen from time to time and they are always fun to watch. In the remaining minutes, Real Madrid continue with its attacking plays but the result was the same, the shots were either stopped by the goalkeeper or they went outside. There were also a lot of crosses into the area rejected by Sheriff's defensive players throughout the entire match.
I cannot say Sheriff's victory was deserved but it was at least fun to watch and it is another example of the unpredictable nature of this beautiful sport.
What's next?
I believe the next match I will be watching will be on the weekend. Tomorrow there are more Champions League matches but I don't plan to watch any of those, so on the weekend, I expect to enjoy another football match.
