El ring y los guantes de box, fueron una constante en la dinámica deportiva de Villa de Cura, estado Aragua, Venezuela. Sin duda que hablar de este pueblo, es también rememorar las hazañas del boxeo, es un misterioso fenómeno, donde el deporte va de la mano con la efervescencia de la vida social y se convierte en un protagonista de la memoria histórica.
Mi abuelo Ramón Salinas (Quien formó parte de la Directiva de la Liga de Boxeo en el Municipio Zamora en la década de los 80 ) me contó con el peculiar tono de la nostalgia y de la pasión, algunas vivencias de la Villa de Cura boxística. Él recordó algunos personajes que pasaron por el ring villacurano ( allá en el desaparecido Gimnasio, ubicado en la misma calle de la prefectura al frente de la Plaza Mirada, donde en unas letras de cemento dice: 1940, Mercado) o asistieron en plan de invitados, atletas del renombre nacional e internacional como: Bernardo Piñango, Marcelino Bolívar, Omar Catarí o El Morochito Rodríguez, todos ellos flamantes medallistas Olímpicos, que en sus respectivas ediciones representaron con un verdadero sentido patrio a nuestra nación.
Además mi abuelo afirma que aquí en Villa de Cura estuvo entrenando un Campeón Internacional, el puertorriqueño Esteban de Jesús, el mismo que vio la semejanza entre el baile de la salsa y la técnica del boxeo; Jesús, el 17 de Noviembre de 1972 le propinó la primera derrota al Panameño Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Durán, logró el 16 de Febrero de 1973 el Campeonato Ligero al vencer en San Juan Puerto Rico al estadounidense Ray Lampkin, y luego perdería el título contra el mismo Durán el 11 de Marzo de ese mismo año, un nocaut en 11 asaltos.
¿Por qué solemos olvidar nuestros momentos de gloria?; El boxeo, fue un protagonista de grandes triunfos, Villa de Cura llegó a ser sede de torneos nacionales. En un artículo publicado en el Diario el Aragueño por el profesor y cronista de Villa de Cura Antonio Cabanillas Yépez, expone la importancia de sectores como las “Mercedes” en lo que fue el empuje de este deporte, teniendo como principal baluarte al recordado: Aníbal Nieves, un temible embajador de esta disciplina, quien golpeaba con quiebres de cintura.
Aníbal, como amateur derrotó al campeón mundial en los 57 kilos el cubano Armando Gámez en el torneo “Bicentenario del Nacimiento de El Libertador Simón Bolívar”, en 1983. Como profesional recorrió países como Corea, Japón y México, estuvo en dos oportunidades a punto de disputar el título mundial ligero junior de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (AMB), primero con el surafricano Brian Mitchell (quien renunció a la corona mundial), y luego con el puertorriqueño Genaro Hernánde. Sin embrago, problemas en su vida personal le impidieron llegar a la consagración de su carrera profesional. Y los nombres de boxeadores son inagotables, como los hermanos Nieves (que no tienen ningún parentesco con Aníbal), ellos también marcaron una gran historia, Ángel tuvo tiempo en el profesional con 19 combates, Yovani es el único villacurano que ha disputado un título mundial profesional en 1992 contra YungYung Park y Miguel propinó un célebre nocaut en el primer asalto a los 12 segundos de comenzada la pelea contra el colombiano Santander Vargas en 1989, emulando el récord del legendario campeón mundial pesado Jack Dempsey, cuando iniciando la pelea en apenas 14 segundos noquea a Fred Fulton, en la década de los años 20 del pasado siglo. Posteriormente llegó a ser esparring del campeón mundial pluma Antonio Esparragoza en una defensa del título en Corea, se retira con 30 peleas profesionales, actualmente dirige un gimnasio de boxeo en la comunidad de “La Coromoto”, buscando mantener este deporte como tradición popular.
El profesor Cabanilla se refiere en su artículo, al boxeador José Rivero Montezuma, quien tuvo 15 peleas como amateur en la categoría ligero, y hoy en día es un infatigable estudioso de la historia del Boxeo; Sería interesante seguir tras esas huellas del Boxeo villacurano, que podemos encontrar por allí, ¿Habrá talento villacurano con la posibilidad de convertirse en campeones mundiales? ¿Dónde quedó el boxeo en Villa de Cura?.
Qué bueno sería volver a ver una pelea del mejor boxeo en nuestro municipio, un arte, donde el principal elemento es el estilo, y ojo si se está haciendo Boxeo en villa de Cura , allí está el caso de la escuela de Boxeo “Leo Escalona” que funciona en la Fundación del Niño, quienes están haciendo un trabajo extraordinario, pero se necesita un espacio digno y acorde.
