No hay ser humano en el globo terráqueo que no sepa algo sobre el F.C. Barcelona. Si lo extrapolamos al béisbol, lo mismo sucede con los Yankees de Nueva York. "The Big Apple" ha sido el escenario de la costa este norteamericana para grandes historias. Tanto heroicas como de tragedia. Un año antes de la masacre en las torres del World Trade Center, visitamos la ciudad y subimos a los miradores para observar la estampa de la urbe de concreto. Siempre nos estaremos preguntando ¿qué habría pasado si los terroristas decidían atacar un año antes? Fue un shock y las vistas de los derrumbes fue algo increíblemente traumático.
Tragedias como esa jamás deben repetirse. Sin embargo, la ciudad se levantó de sus cenizas para brillar como siempre. Los Yankees de Nueva York no han hecho honor a esa fulgurosa estirpe. En lo que va de siglo solo se han coronado dos veces (2000 y 2009), siendo uno de los equipos con la nómina más alta. Jugaron en 2023 para balance de 82 triunfos y 80 derrotas (apenas por encima de .500) y en el Bronx ya no saben que hacer para llamar los triunfos. A decir verdad, fueron perjudicados con un hospital durante la campaña, pero eso le sucede a todos los equipos.

There is not a human being on the globe who does not know something about FC Barcelona. If we extrapolate it to baseball, the same goes for the New York Yankees. "The Big Apple" has been the backdrop of the American East Coast for great stories. Both heroic and tragic. Es duro lo que voy a decir, pero ¿De qué sirve tener una nómina tan alta, además de talento, si ésta no rinde los resultados que de ella se esperan? Juzguen ustedes: La ofensiva neoyorquina golpeó para AVE de .227 ¡30 puntos por debajo de la media! ¡Increíble! Con ese performance apenas lograron el puesto 29 de 30 equipos. Se escribe y no se cree. Estamos hablando de un equipo para el que juega Aaron Judge y compañía ¡Por dios! En contraste, fue el equipo de lanzadores quienes salvaron a los Yankees de un desastre completo. Picharon para EFE de 3.97, reservando el lugar 10 de 30 rosters. Un equipo que siempre se ha definido por sus bateadores, de pronto, no batea nada. No podían aspirar más allá de un cuarto lugar en la tabla.
Ocho venezolanos se encontraban acondicionando músculos en el George M. Steinbrenner Field de Tampa, Fl: dos invitados y seis en el roster de 40. Oddanier Mosqueda y Luis Torrens intentan ganarse el puesto, el primero como lanzador y el segundo como infielder suplente. Mosqueda le ha ido mal y tiene EFE de 9.00, Torrens lo ha hecho mejor con AVE de .316. Yoendrys Gómez buscaba un lugar como relevista, pero no superó el corte y fue bajado al igual que Carlos Narváez, aspirante a suplente de la receptoría. Everson Pereira busca un chance en el abarrotado outfield de los Yankees y no le ha ido bien, bateando para AVE de .209. No creo ninguno de los mencionados logre hacer el equipo antes del vamos.

Oddanier Mosqueda and Luis Torrens are trying to win the job, the former as a pitcher and the latter as a relief infielder. Mosqueda has fared poorly and has an EFE of 9.00, Torrens has done better with an AVE of .316. Yoendrys Gómez was looking for a spot as a reliever, but did not make the cut and was dropped, as was Carlos Narváez, a contender for the backup catcher's job. Everson Pereira is looking for a chance in the crowded Yankees outfield and has not fared well, batting .209 AVE. I don't think any of the aforementioned will make the team before the start of the season.

Oswald Peraza ha puesto en peligro lo logrado el año pasado y apenas batea para AVE de .125 en el spring training. Si no mejora lo van a dejar libre. Así de simple. Solo dos peloteros tienen su puesto seguro: Oswaldo Cabrera, quien se consolidó el año pasado como suplente del outfield aunque también asistió en tercera base. Ya nada tiene que demostrar en las menores a pesar de que no ha tenido una buena primavera y dificultamos muchísimo que lo bajen a pesar de su pírrico AVE de .211 en Tampa.
Gleyber Torres es el segunda base titular de los mulos del Bronx. El año pasado bateó para línea ofensiva de AVE .273, 25 cuadrangulares y 68 carreras traídas a la registradora. Es un pelotero estelar y ha tenido una excelente pretemporada bateando para AVE de .323, 3 jonrones y 6 impulsadas ¿Podrán los Yankees avanzar sin Gerrit Cole en el roster por lesión? ¿Estabilizarán la batería de tal modo que produzcan las carreras necesarias? Si los chicos de la gran manzana logran mejorar la ofensiva, es posible que se metan en la pelea por los comodines en la división más dura del béisbol. Nos leemos por allí.
