El Petco Park en San Diego, CA, verá jugar a cinco venezolanos. Pero antes de checar quienes son, veamos como les fue a los sacerdotes la temporada pasada. Jugaron para 82 ganados y 80 perdidos en la división oeste de la liga nacional y ello les permitió llegar en tercer puesto. No se apoderaron de uno de los comodines porque jugaron con récord perdedor los últimos 10 juegos de la temporada. Antes de eso eran candidatos, pero les faltó lo que fue una constante en todo el año: bateo.
Y no se puede explicar de otra manera. El cuerpo de lanzadores de los Padres fue el segundo en pitcheo colectivo de la gran carpa. Así, las cosas, nada se les puede reprochar. Pero el juego no es solamente lanzar. Y batear fue lo que no hicieron los religiosos. Vamos, también tuvieron muchos problemas con las lesiones, pero eso forma parte del juego. Además, siempre conseguirán en las menores alguien que pueda batear. Pero los chicos californianos lo hicieron para un pírrico AVE .244 y así no se puede.

Petco Park in San Diego, CA, will see five Venezuelans play. But before we check out who they are, let's see how the Priests fared last season. They played for 82 wins and 80 losses in the NL West division and that allowed them to finish in third place. They didn't grab one of the wild cards because they played with a losing record the last 10 games of the season. Before that they were contenders, but they lacked what was a constant all year: hitting.
And it can't be explained any other way. The Padres pitching staff was second in collective pitching in the big tent. As it is, they can't be faulted. But the game is not just about pitching. And hitting was what the Padres didn't do. Come on, they also had a lot of problems with injuries, but that's part of the game. Besides, they'll always get someone in the minors who can hit. But the California boys did it for a pyrrhic .244 AVE and that's not the way to go.

San Diego llega a Peoria, AZ para estirar los músculos en ésta primavera y mostrarán lo que podrían hacer en el Peoria Sports Complex, con cinco chicos originarios de Venezuela. De ellos solo uno está proyectado para ser titular en el center field del Petco Park: José Azócar. Ha habido muchas teorías sobre que hacer en el outfield de los Padres, una de ellas dictamina que Juan Soto debiera ocupar el jardín central de equipo, pero hay un pequeño detalle.
Juan Soto jugó una espectacular temporada defensiva en el jardín derecho y para quienes conocen el Petco Park, no es un sitio para colocar a cualquier jugador. Los amplios callejones en los jardines del estadio, se complican más hacia ese lado del campo. Entonces las cosas se dificultarán para un outfielder inexperto. De allí el porqué los Padres se la van a jugar en el central con Azócar y no con Soto. José fue subido en Agosto luego de recuperarse de una lesión en Mayo e impresionó a los coaches del equipo. Si tiene una buena primavera, será el titular del equipo.

San Diego comes to Peoria, AZ to stretch their muscles this spring and show what they could do at the Peoria Sports Complex, with five guys from Venezuela. Only one of them is projected to start in center field at Petco Park: Jose Azocar. There have been many theories about what to do in the Padres outfield, one of which dictates that Juan Soto should occupy center field, but there is one small detail.
Juan Soto played a spectacular defensive season in right field and for those who know Petco Park, it is not a place to put just any player. The wide alleys in the stadium's outfield make it more complicated on that side of the field. So things would get complicated for an inexperienced outfielder. Hence why the Padres are going to go with Azócar in center field and not Soto. Jose was brought up in August after recovering from an injury in May and impressed the team's coaches. Los otros venezolanos serán: el jugador del cuadro suplente Tucupita Marcano, un lanzador abridor ocasional en Pedro Ávila y dos lanzadores relevistas Robert Suárez y Jairo Iriarte (éste último es un novato que tendrá que ganarse el puesto en el campo de entrenamiento, aunque está protegido en el roster de 40). De ellos, los más conocidos son Tucupita Marcano (quien jugará a mediados de temporada porque se recupera de una rotura de ligamentos en la rodilla) y Pedro Ávila.
Los Padres deberán corregir su mecánica de bateo si desean figurar en las fases postreras de la temporada. Se movieron bastante en el receso y las nuevas adquisiciones podrían ayudarles en éste aspecto del juego. El pitcheo mantendrá la calidad del año pasado. Así las cosas, si logran controlar a los Gigantes y a los D-Backs podrían colarse al segundo lugar de la división oeste, donde reinará seguramente los Dodgers de Los Ángeles. Nos leemos por allí.

The other Venezuelans will be: relief infielder Tucupita Marcano, an occasional starting pitcher in Pedro Avila and two relief pitchers Robert Suarez and Jairo Iriarte (the latter is a rookie who will have to earn his spot in training camp, although he is protected on the 40-man roster). Of these, the best known are Tucupita Marcano (who will play mid-season because he is recovering from torn knee ligaments) and Pedro Avila.
The Padres will need to correct their batting mechanics if they want to figure in the later stages of the season. They moved around quite a bit in the offseason and the new acquisitions could help them in this aspect of the game. The pitching will maintain last year's quality. So, if they can control the Giants and D-Backs, they could sneak into second place in the West Division, where the Los Angeles Dodgers will surely reign. We will read you there.
