En el día de ayer finalizó el St. Jude Championship, el primero de 3 eventos que definen al ganador de la FedEx Cup, una especie de torneo especial dentro del circuito de la PGA, el más importante circuito de golf del planeta.
La FedEx Cup es una copa que determina el fin del año golfístico de la PGA aunque luego continúen disputándose torneos de menor jerarquía, en general se dice así porque todos los grandes jugadores se toman un receso y será difícil verlos en otros torneos hasta fin de año a excepción de la Ryder Cup y la Presidents Cup que son eventos que se disputan cada 2 años alternados, la Ryder donde jugadores de Estados Unidos seleccionados por su desempeño se enfrentan al resto de Europa y la otra copa, donde nuevamente jugadores de Estados Unidos elegidos de la misma manera disputan un match contra el resto del mundo.
Pero el golf no se detiene y llega el momento esperado por muchos profesionales para participar en torneos de menos exigencia y juntar puntos para retener la tarjeta que los habilita para participar del circuito el año siguiente, todos menos los que hayan ganado al menos una vez, lo que les asegura permanecer en el mismo al menos por un año más.
Volviendo a la FedEx Cup, la participación de los jugadores profesionales en el primero de estos eventos se determina por un ranking anual que va otorgando puntos a medida que avanza el calendario y los torneos se suceden; al St. Jude Championship llegan los 70 primeros en ese ranking donde se reparten 20 millones de dólares, luego de finalizado este torneo solo los 50 primeros pasan a disputar el BMW Championship que es el segundo campeonato de la FedEx donde el premio global sube a 23 millones, de allí surgen los 30 que disputarán la final en el torneo denominado Tour Championship que es el más importante y reparte 57 millones de dólares, con 10 millones para el ganador.
En este torneo finalizado en la tarde de ayer venía liderando Tommy Fleetwood al cierre del día sábado, un gran jugador del cual ya he hablado en otra oportunidad, un jugador infortunado hasta el momento ya que ha disputado 162 eventos de la PGA, pero nunca ha ganado, aunque tiene 6 segundos puestos y 29 top 5, le volvió a ocurrir lo de algunas semanas atrás, a falta de 3 hoyos para terminar, por errores propios y empuje de algunos rivales, volvió a quedarse con las manos vacías, finalizó tercero a un golpe del ganador.
Por su parte, otro inglés como Fleetwood, me refiero a Justin Rose, un veterano de 45 años levantó una vuelta que no venía tan bien y con 4 birdies en los últimos 5 hoyos empató en el primer lugar con el norteamericano J.J. Spaun para luego quedarse con el título en hoyos de desempate. Rose, un veterano que parece inoxidable, se mantiene en excelente forma y obtiene un título más que importante que lo sitúa entre los jugadores de mayor edad en lograrlo en la PGA y le da un gran empuje para quedarse por segunda vez con la FedEx Cup.
Todavía quedan dos torneos para definir el campeón de la FedEx de este año, mucho golf por ver y disfrutar y dos nuevas posibilidades para Fleetwood, que pese a su escasa fortuna en esto de ganar, ha demostrado en reiteradas oportunidades que tiene el golf suficiente como para lograrlo.

There are still two tournaments left to determine this year's FedEx Cup champion, plenty of golf to watch and enjoy, and two new opportunities for Fleetwood, who, despite his lack of luck in winning, has repeatedly demonstrated that he has the golf skills to pull it off.
