Matrioshka es una conocida muñeca de origen ruso que destaca por sus refinadas decoraciones y por contener otras cada vez más pequeñas en su interior, una especie de juego de espejos donde la misma imagen se repite hasta el infinito.
Aquí en Sudamérica es conocida como mamushka y una famosa chocolatería de la región de Bariloche utiliza ese nombre como marca distintiva en la elaboración y venta de sus exquisiteces, recuerdo uno de sus locales en pleno centro comercial de la turística ciudad con varias de esas muñecas de gran tamaño girando en sus marquesinas como señal distintiva y para atraer compradores y consumidores en una lucha sin cuartel con otras varias fábricas de chocolate que discuten el predominio de una especialidad que es marca registrada en la Patagonia Argentina.
Matrioshka también se utiliza como alegoría para dar a entender que un problema puede esconder otro y así sucesivamente hasta convertirse en una cadena de engorroso final.
Algo así es como veo lo ocurrido en el equipo Red Bull de Fórmula Uno en los últimos tiempos.
Pocos días atrás comenté sobre la salida de Christian Horner y su reemplazo por Laurent Mekies como principal responsable de la escudería, mencioné en ese artículo que Horner había sido despedido por la mala actuación del equipo en esta temporada, esa es la excusa principal esgrimida por el directorio de la empresa, sabemos que hubo un problema muy grave subyacente y que es el desprestigio que las acusaciones de una ex-empleada ocasionó al exitoso jefe de equipo, nadie lo asegura pero eso pudo haber ocasionado que sus días estuvieran contados.
Ahora bien, como cuando separamos en dos partes una matrioshka y sale otra más pequeña a la luz, así se me reveló otro evento que, aunque no definitivo, seguro debió haber colaborado en que la balanza se inclinara inexorablemente hacia la salida del mencionado Horner, ese hecho trascendental es nada menos que la ida del exitosísimo Adrian Newey, diseñador principal de Red Bull y cuyos vehículos dieron a la escudería 7 títulos de piloto, 6 de constructores y 118 grandes premios ganados.
Nadie en su sano juicio dentro de la organización ha visto con buenos ojos que Newey se fuera hacia Aston Martin, no pocos deben haber achacado a Horner esa renuncia, aunque no tuviera nada que ver con la decisión personal del especialista en diseño y sus esfuerzos para retenerlo hayan sido en vano, la responsabilidad final le compete.
La salida de Newey había acontecido prácticamente un año atrás y ya estaba planificada incluso desde antes, el propio implicado dijo a en declaraciones a la prensa que necesitaba un nuevo desafío, nuevos retos, eso lo consiguió en Aston Martin, desde hace pocos meses es el nuevo socio técnico director y accionista de la escudería que espera con ansias que su magia obre milagros y los deposite entre los mejores vehículos para el próximo año.
Volviendo a Horner, su salida anticipada ya que su contrato recién vencía en 2030 le reportarán entre 60 y 80 millones de dólares de indemnización sumado a los salarios, bonos y otras prerrogativas del corriente año harán que la suma se convierta en una de las mayores compensaciones económicas en toda la historia de la F1, esa es la parte buena si se quiere, la mala es que el juicio de la ex-empleada seguramente llegará a los tribunales durante el año próximo, esa será otra historia o la continuación de esta.
Mientras tanto la máxima categoría del automovilismo internacional no detiene su marcha, ya se habla en los pasillos de una posible llegada del recientemente cesanteado Horner a la escudería Alpine gracias a su excelente relación con Flavio Briatore y el inminente arribo de un nuevo CEO a Renault, también Ferrari ha intentado tentarlo en el pasado y es probable que vuelva a hacerlo ahora que está libre.
Como lo que ocurre con la famosa muñeca rusa, lo que comenzó con una denuncia está destapando el interior de otros contratiempos, dificultades y consecuencias imprevisibles, veremos en que termina esta historia, que como muchas otras en la F1 se vuelve más y más interesante a cada momento.
Red Bull and the matryoshka
Matryoshka is a well-known Russian doll known for its refined decorations and for containing increasingly smaller ones inside, a kind of mirror game where the same image is repeated ad infinitum.
Here in South America, it's known as a mamushka, and a famous chocolate shop in the Bariloche region uses that name as a distinctive trademark for the production and sale of its delicacies. I remember one of its stores in the heart of the tourist city's shopping center with several of these oversized dolls spinning on its awnings as a distinctive sign and to attract buyers and consumers in a relentless battle with several other chocolate factories vying for dominance of a specialty that is a registered trademark in Argentine Patagonia.
Matryoshka is also used as an allegory to imply that one problem can hide another, and so on, until it becomes a chain of complicated outcomes.
Something like that is how I see what has happened to the Red Bull Formula One team recently.
A few days ago, I commented on the departure of Christian Horner and his replacement by Laurent Mekies as the team's head coach. I mentioned in that article that Horner had been fired due to the team's poor performance this season. This is the main excuse given by the company's board of directors. We know there was a severe underlying problem, and that it was the discrediting of the successful team principal caused by the accusations of a former employee. No one can guarantee it, but that could have meant his days were numbered.
Now, like when you cut a matryoshka doll into two parts and a smaller one emerges, another event was revealed to me that, although not definitive, must certainly have contributed to the inexorable tilt of the scales toward the aforementioned Horner's departure. That momentous event is none other than the departure of the highly successful Adrian Newey, Red Bull's lead designer, whose cars gave the team seven drivers' titles, six constructors' titles, and 118 Grand Prix wins.
No one in their right mind within the organization has welcomed Newey's departure to Aston Martin. Quite a few must have blamed Horner for the departure. Even if it had nothing to do with the design specialist's personal decision and their efforts to retain him were in vain, the ultimate responsibility lies with him.
Newey's departure had happened practically a year ago and was already planned. The person involved told the press that he needed a new challenge. He got that at Aston Martin. For a few months now, he has been the team's new technical director and shareholder, and he eagerly awaits his magic to work miracles and place them among the best cars for next year.
Returning to Horner, his early departure, as his contract was only due to expire in 2030, will net him between $60 and $80 million in severance pay, along with the current year's salary, bonuses, and other perks. This sum will be one of the largest financial compensations in F1 history. That's the good part, if you will. The bad part is that the former employee's lawsuit will likely reach the courts next year. That will be another story, or the continuation of this one.
Meanwhile, the top flight of international motorsports continues its momentum. There's already talk in the corridors of a possible move for the recently dismissed Horner to the Alpine team, thanks to his excellent relationship with Flavio Briatore and the imminent arrival of a new CEO at Renault. Ferrari has also tried to tempt him in the past and is likely to do so again now that he's free.
Like what happened with the famous Russian doll, what began with a complaint is uncovering the inside of other setbacks, difficulties, and unforeseen consequences. We'll see how this story ends, which, like many others in F1, becomes more and more interesting with each passing moment.
