Greetings friends. A few days ago someone asked me to make some keychains inspired by the elements of the Mario Bros. games. I was listing some of the elements I could make and I came up with several. The first one I made was one quite well known as the Super Star or Starman.
This game element gives temporary invincibility to Mario or Luiggi when they manage to catch him. It's very common and recurring in games so I thought it would be great to start with this iconic element of the Mario world and games.
Saludos amigos. Hace unos días alguien me encargó hacer unos llaveros inspirados en los elementos de los juegos de Mario Bros. Estuve enumerando algunos de los elementos que podría hacer y se me ocurrieron varios. El primero que hice fue uno bastante conocido como el de Super Star o Starman.
Este elemento del juego da invencibilidad temporal a Mario o a Luiggi cuando logran atraparlo. Es muy común y recurrente en los juegos así que pensé que sería genial comenzar con este elemento tan icónico del mundo y juegos de Mario.
Step by step
The materials I used for this keychain were as follows
- Flexible dough / Cold Ceramic
- Paint
- Paper
- Jewelry wire
- Ring and chain
- Glue
The paper was the first thing I used for this keychain, since the idea was to make a pattern that I could use to cut out the flexible dough based on this mold I made in paper.
If you look at the image below, I made the pattern on the paper. Then I used the flexible dough (mixed with yellow paint) to stretch the material and make it completely flat. On this I placed the star that would serve as a guide.

Los materiales que utilicé para este llavero fueron los siguientes
- Masa flexible / Cerámica Fría
- Pintura
- Papel
- Alambre de bisutería
- Argolla y cadena
- Pegamento
El papel fue lo primero que utilicé para este llavero, ya que la idea era hacer un patrón que me sirviera para recortar la masa flexible en base a este molde que hice en papel.
Si se fijan en la imagen de abajo, hice el patrón en el papel. Luego usé la masa flexible (mezclada con pintura amarilla) para estirar el material y hacerlo completamente plano. Sobre este coloqué la estrella que me serviría de guía.

With the help of a cutter I made the cuts in the material to give it the best star shape, then I rounded the edges a little and smoothed the cuts that remained in the corners. As the material was already hardening, I simply discarded the leftovers, that's the bad thing about flexible dough.
Con ayuda de un cutter hice los cortes en el material para lograr darle la mejor forma de estrella, luego redondeé un poco los bordes y suavicé los cortes que quedaron en los ángulos. Como el material ya estaba endureciéndose, el sobrante simplemente lo deseché, es lo malo de la masa flexible.
After I had the star shape ready, I continued with the eyes, which I made with a shape similar to rice grains, but black. First I made some cavities and then I glued the eyes with quick-drying glue.
Luego de tener lista la forma de estrella, continué con los ojos, los cuales los hice con una forma parecida a unos granitos de arroz, pero de color negro. Primeramente hice unas cavidades y luego pegué los ojos con pegamento de secado rápido.
After the eyes were glued, I took some flexible dough and mixed it with black paint. Because the flexible dough takes on pastel colors when mixed with paint, I had to gradually mix in more black paint until I got the desired black color, rather than a light gray.
I had to let the material dry for a few minutes to harden a bit, then I made a long strip of flexible dough, which would serve as the rim for the little keychain.
As you can see in the image below, I glued it around the keychain, using a strong glue to keep it in place, to be more specific, carpentry glue.
Después de que pegaron los ojos, tomé un poco de masa flexible y la mezclé con pintura negra. Debido a que la masa flexible adopta colores pasteles cuando se mezcla con pintura, tuve que ir mezclando gradualmente con más pintura negra hasta obtener el color negro deseado, en lugar de un gris claro.
Tuve que dejar secar el material unos minutos para que se endureciera un poco, luego hice una larga tira de masa flexible, que me serviría de borde para el pequeño llavero.
Como pueden ver en la imagen de abajo, lo pegué alrededor del llavero, usando un pegamento fuerte para que se mantuviera en su lugar, para ser más específico, pegamento de carpintería.

One of the last things I did was to place this little rectangle on the back. To give more support to this part I used a bijouterie wire to hold the two parts together, and I used more glue to keep them well glued to each other.
On the other hand, if you look at the rectangular piece of flexible dough, at the top, it has a ring that will be used to attach the chain and the ring to the key ring.
Ya una de las últimas cosas que hice fue colocarle este pequeño rectángulo en la parte trasera. Para darle mayor soporte a esta parte usé un alambre de bisutería para sujetar las dos partes, además de que usé más pegamento para que se mantuvieran bien pegadas una con la otra.
Por otra parte, si se fijan en la pieza de masa flexible rectangular, en la parte superior, tiene una argolla que servirá para unir la cadena y la argolla junto al llavero.
