We started off with a guided tour, but the guide—clearly passionate about the site’s history—was taking her time at every stop. Her enthusiasm was obvious, but the pace was a bit too slow for us. So we decided to continue the visit on our own, exploring at our own speed this Benedictine abbey founded in 910 by William I of Aquitaine.
The first thing to know is that today, only a tiny part of the original abbey church remains. It’s quite hard to picture just how massive it must have been in the Middle Ages. Yet at its peak, it was the largest church in the Christian world.
Nous avons commencé par suivre une visite guidée, mais la guide, visiblement passionnée par l’histoire du lieu, s’attardait longuement à chaque étape. Son enthousiasme était palpable, mais le rythme trop lent à notre goût. Nous avons donc décidé de continuer la visite par nous-mêmes, pour découvrir, à notre vitesse, cette abbaye bénédictine fondée en 910 par Guillaume Ier d’Aquitaine.
Ce qu’il faut savoir avant tout, c’est qu’aujourd’hui, seule une infime partie de l’abbatiale d’origine subsiste. Il est assez difficile d’imaginer l’immensité qu’elle représentait à l’époque médiévale. Pourtant, à son apogée, c’était la plus grande église du monde chrétien.
