Recently I came across a post in Diyhub by @Cleanplanet on Hive about a contest where participants are encouraged to use the material from home to make some thing useful.
After moving to Qatar recently, I really feel bad when I have to throw plastic, glass and cardboards in just the bin as there aren’t any recycling bins around my area. So I try to re-use as much as possible.
For this project I used plastic bottles. It’s a bit hard to use a plastic material as I don’t like to use spray paint, and the non-toxic paints need a texture to work on plastic. So there are more steps to follow but I like how these look at end.
First I washed the bottle with warm water and dish washing liquid.
After cleaning and soaking with water I couldn’t remove the label completely so I used WD40.
I repeated the same steps with other bottles. Later using cutter and scissors I joined the bottles with adhesive to desired height. I cut the upper neck of bottle to give it the shape I wanted.
For first layer I used soda bicarbonate and white glue in a ratio of 2:1 and added some golden paint. After applying it I let it dry completely.
For the second layer I used baby powder and white glue with the ratio of 2:1 and added silver colour in the paste. As it was a thicker paste so I let it dry overnight.
On the dried surface I used silver and golden paint. When the paint was dry I used glue mixed with water to seal.
Using some paper I wrote the alphabets for “HIVE” and painted those in blue
When the paint was dry, I used those to decorate the vase.
