The truth is as hard as it may seem compassion is always here living within each and every one of us.
So first off what is compassion ?
Compassion is that deep recognition that i have suffering and you have suffering and in that there's a shared sense of common humanity. Compassion also invites us to put things into perspective.
By taking the perspective of those who are struggling which in this case sounds like your friend. Now although it may seem like she isn't doing anything to change he environment maybe she's doing the best she can with what she knows .
Compassion truly starts from home, as we're giving compassion out to the world it's important that we're filling our own cup. So, compassion and action could be to practice loving kindness for yourself, or your friend, or for all others in similar situations.
Whether that's doing a meditation or simply writing down a few good wishes to your friend. This can help with maintaining compassion without having to interact with your friend.
Creating and setting boundaries are also an act of compassion. Boundaries help us to care for and love ourselves and others in a healthy and safe way. Now as hard as it may seem this can also be an opportunity for us to practice acceptance.
Realizing that sometimes there's people in our life who we just can't help and that's okay. This doesn't diminish our character in any way. It's the resistance to this that actually causes more pain and in fact, there's something called compassion fatigue which arises when we place so much time energy and focus on caring for others that we become physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted.
