In the last three posts in this series we looked at the Æsir, the Jötnar species as depicted in Ragnarok Conspiracy and the Hylobo Sapiens species. Two alien species and a hidden terestial one.
In this world building post we look a bit closer to the beginning of the book, at the Pacific Union for Patents and Royalties (PUPR) and it's earlier nameless proto form. To look into this part of the world building our timeline will intercept with part-I of the book and will discuss one of the characters backstory as to his relevance to the creation of PUPR.
Wietse's ground breaking discovery.
At the beginning of Ragnarok Conspiracy, while his influence was already felt in the prologue (set in june 2027), we meet Wietse Dijkstra nine years later in chapter 7 as an aging scientist in captivity.
But Wietse's story begins long before that. More than fourty years before that, when Wietse is a particle scientist in his early 30s working on entanglement.
The lore of PUPR starts when Wietse, while working on expanding on the monogamy of entanglement into a triad exclusion conjecture that he hoped to proof, he discovers that his conjecture is not only wrong, but that the monogamy of entanglement as used in particle physics is only conditionally correct. Wietse does experiments that lead to strongly entangled triads and after considering the potential implications of his discovery theorizes that his discovery would not only make quantum computing viable, the stability of the 3 way entanglement and one of it's core newly discovered properties would almost completely do away with the need for error correction, and would provide quantum circuits with what Wietse likens to a convenient entanglement reset button for qbits that would potentialy speed up quantum calculations by two orders of magnitude. The impact on decoherence related concerns for theorized quantum computers would be a game changer, potentialy moving forward the time table for practical quantum computing by at least half a century.
Wietse realizing he will need massive funding for his research, funding that would take a decade of his universities full research budget, decides to seek out commercial funding.
Fake death
Wietse travels from The Netherlands meets up with a group of seven potential investors from different countries, and gives the presentation of a lifetime. But then after the the potential investors give eachother understanding looks and unexpectedly ask him to wait and all leave the room, a group of masked man enter the room and Wietse gets abducted.
Two days later a fire followed by an explosion occurs in Wietse's lab, and what appears to be Wietse's body is found in what remains of the building. Wietse is dead, officialy, but in reality he has started his long captivity, working on the first quantum computer. not for advancement of humanity, but with as one and only goal industrial espionage.
The secret growth of PUPR
After Wietse competes the world's first quantum computing in 1996 and the first real-crypto targeting implementation of Shor's algoritm in 1999, Wietse's captors start building their empire in secret. They buy stake in companies before they file ground breaking pattents, sometimes inject pattent worthy tecnological discoveries they intercepted into companies they have a big stake in, and their fortune and access and proxied ownership of IP keeps growing and growing. They work through funds and holdings in order to stay of the radar as an entity, but their grip on the tech sector while covert grows stronger and stronger.
Exposure plan
In the prologue Dalila is asked to repair the laptop of his crush's boyfriend what he reluctantly does and then discovers a collection of crypto private keys that he uses to commit a large scale blockchain heist. This wasn't what Wietse had planned but it eventualy does lead to the exposure of his capturers that Wietse had been hoping for. Wietse had gained access to the laptop of one of his guards, had discovered a lot of cryptographic material on it, and ignorant to what crypro currency was had left proof of his quantum slicing work by puting a quantum-sliced private key of all the public keys he had found on the laptop in a place a computer repair person would find them.
While the blockchain heist wasn't Wietse's plan, forensic investigation of the incident eventualy did lead to exposure of the thus far unnamed group.
Formation of PUPR
The group, not willing to face the legal consequences of their activities leveredged their covert influence and exposed their true power to the world. Showing their quantum-slicing didn't just work for industrial espionage, the military of nation states was largely powerless due to the information position and the iron grip on the weapon industry that the group helt. The group consolidated the brunt of it's power through commercial, military and political influence, and PUPR was formed in a way that was a complete power grap in the affected regions. This power grab initiated the Copyright Wars. The Pacific Union For Patents and Royalties started with just major tech hubs like south korea and California but quickly was expanded to include much of the regions bordering the pacific. The west coast of the US and canada, All Middle American countries boprdering the pacific, Chili, Western Columbia, Equador, Peru, Easern Russia, Japan, Korea, North-East China, The Philipenes, New Guinea, Eastern Indonesia and the norhtern island of New Zealand.
Other economically or military relevant countries were offered a semi-independent protectorate status under the condition of decentralization of power and timely transfer of power to muncipality level.
Remaining regions in the Americas apart from Canada (that was part of EU-NATO at the time) became PUPR protectorate, As did all of the Arabian peninsula, India, Australia and the remainder of New Zealand.
