Orinoco: entre pesca y crecida

Hace más de cinco semanas tomé esta foto pensando en el concurso, la foto la, tome en el bulevar del río Orinoco, en Ciudad Bolívar. Allí podemos notar cómo esos señores están en su jornada de pesca, una escena que se repite a diario en esta tierra de agua y tradición. Aunque esa foto es de hace más de cinco semanas, el río Orinoco no tenía tanta agua y los niveles de agua no estaban como están hoy, donde hay muchos sitios que están inundados, incluyendo el casco central de Ciudad Bolívar.

A pesar de que ese día el cielo estaba medio nublado, como siempre el calor era insoportable, porque es un calor con mucha humedad y el río con su caudal corría tranquilo, como si no tuviera prisa. Los pescadores estaban concentrados, cada uno con su red de pesca otros solo con el nailon y el nailon con muchos anzuelos, pero muy grandes, su silencio, y su paciencia, me quedé un rato observando, recordando cuando yo estaba chamo me iba con mis compañeros de clase a la orilla del río, y con una cuerda, un anzuelo y un poco de masa me ponía también a pescar. No era por necesidad, era para saber si podía pescar, y algunas veces lo podía lograr.

Lo que más me impacta al ver esta imagen hoy es el contraste con la situación actual. En solo cinco semanas, el Orinoco ha crecido tanto que ha cubierto calles, plazas, y casas enteras. El casco central de Ciudad Bolívar, las calles están llenas de agua y toda esa parte aunque no lo crean huele a pescado. Es increíble cómo el mismo río que alimenta, que da vida, también puede volverse amenaza.

Esta foto, entonces, no solo muestra una jornada de pesca. Para mí también un testimonio de cómo cambia el paisaje, de cómo la naturaleza tiene sus ciclos, sus ritmos, y sus advertencias, a pesar de todo, la gente sigue adelante, con su forma de pescar, esperando que el río les dé algo bueno.

Orinoco: between fishing and flooding

More than five weeks ago, I took this photo thinking about the contest. I captured it on the boulevard by the Orinoco River, in Ciudad Bolívar. You can see how those men are in the middle of their fishing routine—a scene that repeats itself daily in this land of water and tradition. Although the photo is over five weeks old, the Orinoco didn’t have much water back then, and the water levels weren’t like they are today, where many places are flooded, including the historic center of Ciudad Bolívar.

Even though the sky was partly cloudy that day, the heat was unbearable as always—it's a humid kind of heat—and the river flowed calmly, as if it were in no rush. The fishermen were focused, each with his own fishing net, others just with nylon lines and big hooks. Their silence, their patience. I stayed there for a while watching them, remembering how, when I was a kid, I used to go with my classmates to the riverbank. With a string, a hook, and a bit of dough, I’d try to fish too. Not out of need, but just to see if I could catch something—and sometimes, I actually did.

What strikes me most when I look at this image today is the contrast with the current situation. In just five weeks, the Orinoco has risen so much that it’s covered streets, plazas, and entire homes. The center of Ciudad Bolívar is underwater, and believe it or not, the whole area smells like fish. It’s incredible how the same river that feeds us, that gives life, can also become a threat.

So this photo isn’t just a snapshot of a fishing day. For me, it’s a testimony of how the landscape changes, how nature has its cycles, its rhythms, and its warnings. And despite everything, people keep going, with their own way of fishing, hoping the river will still bring something good.
