I remember very well the first time I wrote on Q-inspired. I felt it had to have two characteristics to really make it interesting, and above all, to respect the spirit of this community. The first one: pure inspiration but also passion. In other words, the topics I was going to share here had to have a special substance. It had to be overwhelmingly evident that what I publish is something I love with my soul (assuming, of course, that there is such a thing as "soul"). I'm not entirely sure if my songs have been received in that way, but what I am convinced of is that I have worked my heart out on each one of them. So, today I bring you the story behind one of the most iconic songs of the 90's.
Recuerdo muy bien la primera vez que escribí en Q-inspired. Sentía que debía tener dos características para realmente hacerlo interesante, y sobre todo, para respetar el espíritu de esta comunidad. La primera: inspiración pura pero también pasión. Es decir, los temas que aquí iba a compartir, tenían que poseer una sustancia especial. Que se notara, con abrumadora evidencia, que lo que publico es algo que amo con el alma (asumiendo, claro está que exista tal cosa como el "alma"). No estoy del todo seguro, si mis temas han sido recibidos de ésa manera, pero de lo que estoy convencido es que me he dejado la piel en cada uno de ellos. Es así, como hoy les traigo, la historia detrás de una de las canciones más emblemáticas de los 90's.
Pearl Jam's "Even Flow", more than just a song.
During the early years of the Grunge band, originally from Seattle, Washington, in the early 90's, Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam's lead singer and frontman, met a man who was in the most abject destitution. He lived on the mercy and good faith of the people he encountered on a daily basis. Vedder himself used to help him very often, to the point of establishing a friendship with this man that extended to the most touching of respects. Let's remember that we are talking about a guy (Vedder) who, at that time, enjoyed all the spotlight, admiration and fame that a rock musician could crave, while the other was the definition of an antonym.
Still, the good vibes between the two characters endured. They often chatted and the young rocker insisted on helping the unfortunate homeless friend. However, one of the band's tours in those years (1990-1991) caused the two to drift apart for obvious reasons. On returning to Seattle, Eddie Vedder was very surprised not to see his interesting friend from the streets again. He asked for him, even (they say) set himself the task of trying to locate him in the huge metropolis that is the city of grunge. Days and months went by and no news of this dear friend was known. Until one day, someone confessed to Vedder that his friend had died?
"Even Flow" de Pearl Jam, más que una simple canción. Durante los primeros años de la banda de Grunge, originaria de Seattle, Washington, a inicios de los 90's, Eddie Vedder, vocalista y líder de Pearl Jam, conoció a un hombre que estaba en la más absoluta de las indigencias. Vivía de la misericordia y de la buena fe de las personas con las que se topaba a diario. El mismo Vedder, solía ayudarlo con muchísima frecuencia, al punto de entablar con este sujeto, una amistad que se extendía hasta el más conmovedor de los respetos. Recordemos, que estamos hablando de un sujeto (Vedder), que para ese momento, gozaba de todos los reflectores, admiración y fama que un músico de rock pudiera anhelar, mientras el otro era la definición de un antónimo.
Aún así, la buena onda entre ambos personajes perduró. A menudo conversaban y el joven roquero insistía en ayudar al desafortunado amigo indigente. No obstante, en una de las giras que por aquellos años (1990-1991) hizo la banda, hizo que ambos se distanciaran por razones obvias. Al volver de nuevo a Seattle, Eddie Vedder se extrañó muchísimo de no ver más a su interesante amigo de las calles. Preguntó por él, incluso (dicen) que él mismo se puso en la tarea de intentar ubicarlo en la enorme metrópolis que es la ciudad del Grunge. Los días, meses transcurrieron y ninguna noticia de este entrañable amigo se sabía. Hasta que un día, alguien le confesó a Vedder que su amigo había muerto...
He spent months living in the vicinity of a viaduct, where one day (who knows which) he died. The city authorities found him days after his death, and nobody knows where or where he was buried (if he was ever buried at all). When Vedder heard this news, he immediately gave shape to a song that already had a melody, but which the other members of Pearl Jam had not quite defined. This is how the story of "Even Flow" was born, which was originally going to be called "The King" (after the nickname given to the other protagonist of this dramatic and moving story). In 1991, the band released one of the best albums in the history of the genre and of the whole decade, "Ten", into the market and into immortality.
Pasó meses viviendo en las adyacencias de un viaducto, donde un día (quién sabe cuál) murió. Las autoridades de la ciudad lo hallaron días después del deceso y nadie sabe bien dónde ni en cuál lugar fue enterrado (si es que llegó a ser sepultado). Al enterarse de esta noticia, Vedder, inmediatamente le dio forma a una canción que ya tenía melodía, pero que los otros integrantes de Pearl Jam no habían definido del todo. Es así, como nace la historia de "Even Flow", que originalmente iba a llamarse "The King" (por el apodo con el que se conocía al otro protagonista de esta historia dramática y conmovedora). En 1991, la banda lanza al mercado y a la inmortalidad, uno de los mejores álbumes de la historia del género y de toda la década, "Ten".
After the huge and overwhelming success of this musical debut and the album, Pearl Jam chose the singles to accompany the promotion of the album. Among them were the multi-award winning and well-known hits: "Alive, Jeremy, Even Flow and Oceans". These 4 tracks shaped a generation that simply idolised the band at first sight. After the public reception after their first video on MTV (Alive), the guys decided to make the video clip for "Even Flow", and first of all the result was a complete and utter disaster. It was filmed in a zoo in the city of Los Angeles, and what the images conveyed had nothing to do with the sensitive and human theme of the song.
Time passed, the band's dissatisfaction grew, and they decided to remake the video. The best idea they could come up with was to make it as authentic as possible. That's how the video we all know lasted and remained (thank God). Yes, the one that collects pieces of fragments and images of concerts made by the band during a tour. And where the origin of this story was revealed for the first time. And yes, it was during a concert at Safeco Field (baseball stadium) where Eddie Vedder, before playing the song, took a moment and explained the story that linked him to "The King". By all accounts, my friends, an exercise in pure empathy but also a strange humility within the grandeur and luxury usually displayed by the great rock stars.
Después del enorme y abrumador éxito de este debut musical y del disco, Pearl Jam, eligió los singles con los que acompañaría la promoción del álbum. Entre ellos, estaban los multi galardonados y conocidísimos éxitos: "Alive, Jeremy, Even Flow y Oceans". Estos 4 temas dieron forma a una generación que sencillamente idolatró a la banda a primera vista. Después de la recepción del público tras su primer vídeo en la MTV (Alive), los muchachos decidieron hacer el vídeo clip de "Even Flow", y en primer lugar el resultado fue un completo y rotundo desastre. Lo filmaron en un zoológico de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, y lo que transmitían las imágenes, nada tenían que ver con el tema sensible y humano del que habla la canción.
El tiempo pasó, la disconformidad de la banda creció, y decidieron volver a hacer el vídeo. La mejor idea que se les ocurrió fue hacerlo lo más auténtico posible. Es así, como perduró y permaneció (gracias a Dios) el vídeo que todos conocemos. Sí, el que recoge pedazos de fragmentos e imágenes de conciertos hechos por la banda durante una gira. Y donde el origen de esta historia era revelado por primera vez. Y sí, fue durante un concierto en el Safeco Field (estadio de béisbol) donde Eddie Vedder, antes de tocar la canción se tomó un momento y explicó la historia que lo unía con "The King". A todas luces, amigos y amigas, un ejercicio de empatía pura pero también de una humildad extraña dentro de la grandeza y lujo que suelen mostrar las grandes estrellas de rock.
And this is how a more substantial, more beautiful, very sad but above all everyday, mundane story is born, between a boy who was beginning his life as a musician and the noble, probably wounded and lonely soul of a man who for a long time now, the only thing he knew was the inclemency of the indifference offered by the street and all its dangers. A friendly hand was extended to him, the respect and gratitude of two people who did not see each other as different but as common, equal. Poor "King" never got to hear the song that was composed in his honour, but I am convinced that that talented young boy will never forget him. That is how simple the things that come into our lives can be. For me, this is inspiration and humanity, and for you?
Y así es como nace una historia más sustancial, más bella, muy triste pero sobre todo cotidiana, mundana, entre un chico que iniciaba su vida como músico y el alma noble, probablemente herida y solitaria de un hombre que desde hace ya mucho tiempo, lo único que conocía era la inclemencia de la indiferencia que ofrecen la calle y todos sus peligros. Una mano amiga fue extendida hacia él, el respeto y la gratitud de dos personas que no se veían como distintas sino como comunes, iguales. El pobre "King" jamás llegó a escuchar la canción que fue compuesta en su honor, pero estoy convencido que aquél chico joven y talentoso, jamás podrá olvidarlo a él. Así de simple pueden ser las cosas que llegan a nuestras vidas. Para mí, esto es inspiración y humanidad, ¿y para ustedes?
