The decade of the 90's brought us perhaps the best repertoire of music (within rock and roll) that we have ever been able to witness, listen to and enjoy. In those ten years, we were able to enjoy bands such as Guns and Roses, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Metallica, Faith No More, The Melvins, Stone Temple Pilots and, of course, Pearl Jam. On 27 August 1991, the band led by the frontman with the most powerful voice we have ever seen, released their first album, the album with which they debuted and broke every single music chart in the United States and Europe. We are talking, of course, about "Ten". The album includes tracks like "Black", "Jeremy", "Alive", "Even Flow", "Porch" and "Oceans", a masterpiece.
It's 2022, which means that 31 years ago, a bunch of kids from Seattle and California got together, went into a recording studio and put together a collection of eleven songs that would go down in history. A band that would go down in history, in the not so distant future, for being the only band that has remained intact and almost unchanged since its inception, and that still survives to this day. This album, "Ten", was made with the following members: Eddie Vedder on vocals, Mike McCready on guitar, Stone Gossard on second guitar, Jeff Ament on electric bass and Dave Krusen on drums. If you think about it, and now that we are in the "dry season", what these guys did with this immortal album is simply from another planet...
La década de los 90's nos trajo, quizá el mejor repertorio de música (dentro del rock and roll) que jamás hayamos podido presenciar, escuchar y disfrutar. Y es que, en esta decena de años, pudimos disfrutar de bandas como: Guns and Roses, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Metallica, Faith No More, The Melvins, Stone Temple Pilots; y por supuesto, de Pearl Jam. Un 27 de agosto pero de 1991, la banda liderada por el frontman con más potencia en la voz que jamás hayamos visto, lanzaba su primer disco, el álbum con el que debutaron y rompieron todas y cada una de las carteleras musicales en los Estados Unidos y en Europa. Estamos hablando, por supuesto, del "Ten". El disco incluye temas como "Black", "Jeremy", "Alive", "Even Flow", "Porch" y "Oceans", una obra maestra.
Estamos en el 2022, lo que quiere decir que hace 31 años, unos chicos de Seattle y California, se juntaban, entraban a un estudio de grabación y hacían posible una colección de once temas, que pasarían a la historia. Una banda que pasaría a la historia, en un futuro no tan lejano, por ser la única que se ha mantenido íntegra y casi sin modificaciones desde su creación, y que aún perdura hasta el día de hoy. Este álbum, el "Ten", fue realizado con los siguientes miembros: Eddie Vedder, como vocalista, Mike McCready como guitarra, Stone Gossard como segunda guitarra, Jeff Ament en el bajo eléctrico y Dave Krusen en la batería. Si lo piensan bien, y ahora que estamos en "época de sequía". lo que estos muchachos hicieron con este disco inmortal, es sencillamente de otro planeta...
Of the eleven songs on the album, they had no less than seven hits. I repeat, seven! Can you believe that? Although, they only released 3 singles, the band didn't foresee the success it would have and they clearly blew every single one of the sales budgeted for this album. Also, musically, and from my personal point of view, this is the best of their extensive, nourished and significant discography. The sounds on this album are incredible. They have a wonderful combination of strident guitars, with a slightly more refined grunge sound and with the majestic virtue of Mike McCready's guitar, who is a genius when it comes to transmitting feelings and solos with his Les Paul Gibson guitar.
As soon as the first song of the album kicks off, we get into the right vibe of the grunge movement, but it is also notable the Californian energy that is employed by its great star and vocalist, Eddie Vedder. A shy, reserved guy, but who speaks and transmits everything he has for himself, just when he is in front of the microphone. An undeniable power that we perceive when we listen to the reverb-heavy sound of the drum kit and the haunting chimes that the very talented Dave Krusen on drums manages to transmit to us. It is simply impossible to remain still when you start listening to this album. The classic energy of the 90's but with the technical and harmonic touch of Vedder's voice and the perfect union of guitars and melody of the Gossard-McCready team.
De las once canciones que componen el disco, tuvieron nada más y nada menos que 7 hits. Repito, ¡siete! ¿Pueden creer eso? Si bien, solo lanzaron 3 singles, la banda no previó el éxito que tendría y claramente reventaron todas y cada una de las ventas presupuestadas para este álbum. Además, musicalmente, y desde mi óptica personal, éste es el mejor de toda su extensa, nutrida y significativa discografía. Los sonidos que hay en este disco son increíbles. Cuentan con una combinación maravillosa de guitarras estridentes, con un sonido un poco más refinado de grunge y con la majestuosa virtud en la guitarra de Mike McCready, que es un genio en cuanto a transmitir sentimientos y solos con su guitarra Les Paul Gibson.
Nada más arrancar la primera canción del disco, entramos en la onda adecuada del movimiento grunge, pero también es notable la energía californiana que es empleada por su gran estrella y vocalista, Eddie Vedder. Un sujeto tímido, reservado, pero que habla y transmite todo lo que tiene para sí mismo, justo cuando está al frente del micrófono. Un poderío innegable que percibimos al escuchar el sonido con reverb de la caja de la batería y los repiques inquietantes que nos logra transmitir, el talentosísimo Dave Krusen en la batería. Sencillamente, es imposible permanecer inmóvil al empezar a oír este álbum. La energía clásica de los años 90's pero con el toque técnico y armónico de la voz de Vedder y la unión perfecta de guitarras y melodía de equipo compuesto por Gossard-McCready.
And who hasn't cried at some point, with the moving and intimate song "Black"? Once again, a sample of the variety and avant-garde in terms of talent, music and execution that these great musicians had to offer us; in this, their first creation. On the other hand, not to leave out the artistic side of the photography that we see both on the album cover, but also on the poster that comes with it. Where all the members of Pearl Jam are with one arm raised to the sky as a sign of union as a band, and which can be seen in the very well achieved and very well known presentation of the album. A beauty, without a doubt, no matter how you look at it.
However, it is no less true that the enjoyment Pearl Jam had as a band since their first album is also due to the help they had from MTV, as a catalyst channel for multiple bands. And for those who just came out with an innovative proposal, loaded with rock and a lot of talent, they immediately became the "spoiled children" of the well-known television channel. In no way does this fact detract from the band's relevance and merit; on the contrary, from my perspective, it gives them a unique character. Pearl Jam was always a different kind of band. They were always characterised by an iron discipline, and they took the concept of friendship, unity and loyalty to the maximum. Needless to say, of all the grunge movement, they are the only ones we can still enjoy after 30 years.
Además, ¿quién no ha llorado alguna vez, con la emocionante e íntima canción "Black"? Una vez más, una muestra de la variedad y la vanguardia en cuanto a talento, música y ejecución que estos grandísimos músicos tenían para ofrecernos; en ésta, su primera creación. Por otro lado, no dejar el lado artístico de la fotografía que vemos tanto en la portada del álbum, sino en el póster que viene incluído en él. Donde todos los miembros de Pearl Jam, están con un brazo elevado al cielo en señal de unión como banda, y que es apreciable en la muy bien lograda y conocidísima presentación del disco. Una belleza, sin lugar a dudas, por donde sea observado.
Ahora bien, no es menos cierto es que el goce que tuvo Pearl Jam como banda desde su primer disco, también es debido a la ayuda que tuvo de MTV, como canal catalizador de múltiples bandas. Y para aquéllos que recién salían con una propuesta innovadora y cargada de rock y mucho talento, inmediatamente se volvían los "niños mimados" del conocido canal de televisión. De ningún modo, este hecho, le quita relevancia y mérito a la banda; al contrario, desde mi perspectiva, le da un carácter único. Y es que Pearl Jam, siempre fue una banda diferente. Siempre se caracterizaron por una disciplina férrea y llevar el concepto de amistad, unidad y lealtad al máximo. Sobra decir, que de todo el movimiento grunge, son los únicos que aún podemos disfrutar después de 30 años.
The admiration, the passion and the sense of belonging are just some of the initial characteristics of what I can express to you about what this album means to me. Quite simply, they managed to do with "Ten" what very few, very few rock and roll bands could do. Without employing the excesses, without capturing the bad press, or even worse, the obituaries, Pearl Jam from the very beginning have been at the top of the heap of success, universal respect, and above all have earned a place in the immortality of the genre, of rock and music. The band's admiration for the affection they receive in South America is well known; with a notable emphasis on Argentina, as a country, where they are idolised like football or asado (barbecue).
I wouldn't want to end this post/album/review without highlighting how incredibly good they are at harmonies. Have you paid any attention to the choruses and accompaniments on this album, on songs like "Jeremy" or "Porch"? They are just elements that, when listened to, instantly and irreversibly provoke the skin to react to the sound. To be completely frank, very few bands usually have this effect. And if you think it is too exaggerated, I recommend and ask you to try listening to the whole album and tell me what was the reaction you had and if you were indifferent to it or if it provoked something in you after having lived this experience. Honestly, I already know the answer, but it's always good to see the effect on others...
La admiración, la pasión y el sentido de pertenencia, son tan solo algunas de las características iniciales de lo que yo puedo expresarles a ustedes con respecto a lo que este álbum significa para mí. Sencillamente, lograron con "Ten", hacer lo que muy pocas, poquísimas bandas de rock and roll pudieron hacer. Sin emplear los excesos, ni captar la mala prensa, o aún peor, los obituarios, Pearl Jam desde el mero comienzo ha estado en lo más alto de la cúspide del éxito, del respeto universal, y sobre todo se han ganado un lugar en la inmortalidad del género, del rock y de la música. Conocida es la admiración que siente la banda por el cariño que en Sudamérica reciben; haciendo un énfasis notable en la Argentina, como país, donde son idolatrados como el fútbol o el asado.
No quisiera terminar este post/álbum/review, sin destacar lo increíblemente buenos que son en las armonías ¿Le han prestado notable atención a los coros, y a los acompañamientos que hay dentro de este álbum? ¿En canciones como "Jeremy" o "Porch? Son tan solo elementos, que al ser escuchados, provocan de un modo instantáneo e irreversible, que la piel reaccione ante el sonido. Para ser completamente franco, muy pocas bandas suelen ocasionar este efecto. Y si creen, que es demasiado exagerado, les recomiendo y les encargo que hagan la prueba de escuchar el álbum entero y me digan cuál fue la reacción que tuvieron y si después de haber vivido esa experiencia, les resultó indiferente o provocó algo en ustedes. Honestamente, ya conozco la respuesta, pero siempre es bueno ver el efecto en los demás...
Finally, I wasn't planning to post this today, it's my day off, but seeing this important event on the calendar; I just couldn't help myself and wanted to share it with all of you. Besides, if there is something positive about the past is that it allows you to appreciate much better those events that changed history; and the release (31 years ago of "Ten", by Pearl Jam, could not go unnoticed.) of this collection of unbeatable songs is worth the effort of a post on Hive, and even more, within the great community of @qinspired, where you can find (from my perspective) the posts with more musical and artistic passion within the great network that is Hive as a platform. I end, but without first saying, that what makes the world better, is precisely what we feel meaningful, deeply human, as is this album, from this enormous band. A luxury to hear this legacy, and an indescribable pleasure.
Por último, no tenía pensado publicarlo hoy, es mi día de descanso, pero al ver esta importante efeméride en el calendario; sencillamente no lo pude evitar y quise compartirlo con todos ustedes. Además, si algo tiene el pasado positivo es que te permite apreciar muchísimo mejor aquellos acontecimientos que cambiaron la historia; y el lanzamiento (hace 31 años de "Ten", por Pearl Jam, no podía pasar desapercibido.) de esta colección de temas insuperables vale la pena el esfuerzo de un post en Hive, y aún más, dentro de la gran comunidad de @qinspired, donde se hallan (Desde mi perspectiva) los posts con más pasión musical y artística dentro de la gran red que es Hive como plataforma. Termino, pero sin antes decir, que lo que hace al mundo mejor, es precisamente lo es que sentimos significativo, profundamente humano, así como lo es este álbum, de esta enorme banda. Un lujo oír este legado, y un placer indescriptible.
