Recognition often has some aspects that are not so pleasant. What's more, for a long time, it can be quite close to belonging to injustice or even confusion. Well, since the creation of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in the 1980s. With the first induction, held in honour of the enormous, multi-talented, peerless and pioneering Chuck Berry. Since that increasingly distant era, year after year, there have been certain misgivings or controversies regarding who is awarded the recognition (sometimes fair, sometimes debatable, to say the least), and it is not very clear what methodology is used by the "voters" or selectors to announce the possible candidates.
El reconocimiento suele tener algunos aspectos que no son tan gratos. Es más, por mucho tiempo, puede estar bastante cerca de pertenecer a la injusticia o, incluso, a la confusión ¿Qué quiero decir con esto? Pues, desde la creación del Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll, por allá por la década del 80's. Con la primera inducción, llevada a cabo en honor del enorme, multitalentoso, inigualable y pionero Chuck Berry. Desde aquella, cada vez más, lejana época, año tras año, ha habido ciertos recelos o polémicas con respecto a quienes se les otorga el reconocimiento (alguna veces justo, y otras, como mínimo, debatible.) Y es que, no queda muy claro cuál es la metodología que emplean los "votantes" o seleccionadores, para anunciar a los posibles candidatos.
The truth is that there is a lot to cut through and not much light to shed on the matter. This year, as the title of the cover says, Judas Priest has been (finally!) taken into account and enjoys the honour of being among immortal bands like The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Beach Boys, Guns and Roses; and figures like Little Richards, B.B. King, and the aforementioned Chuck Berry. Nevertheless, the debt was present for many, many years. And let's not forget that we are talking about a band (Judas Priest) that, together with Black Sabbath, created out of nothing a gigantic cultural movement that is still going strong in rock and roll today: the glorious and talented heavy metal.
Some say that this award is more nominal than merely musical. That is to say, that its aim is only to superficially promote some artists, while it rewards and catalogues others, who perhaps it wouldn't make much sense for them to be there. This is the case of Eminem, for example. Although he is a figure within his genre (rap, which in turn is part of the Hip Hop culture), he is very much unrelated to the purpose of rock and roll. Last year, another controversy happened that I frankly will never be able to understand. Iron Maiden was completely ignored and simply not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Decisions, that not many people who love this genre (rock) can share, let alone fully understand.
Lo cierto, es que hay mucha tela que cortar y pocas luces al respecto. Este año, como bien dice en el título de la portada, Judas Priest ha sido (¡por fin!) tomado en cuenta y goza con el honor de estar dentro de bandas inmortales como The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Beach Boys, Guns and Roses; y figuras como Little Richards, B.B King, y mencionado anteriormente Chuck Berry. No obstante, la deuda estuvo presente durante muchísimos años. Y no olvidemos que estamos hablando de una banda (Judas Priest) que junto a Black Sabbath, creó de la nada un movimiento cultural gigantesco y que hoy día todavía tiene muchísima fuerza dentro del rock and roll: el glorioso y talentoso, heavy metal.
Algunos dicen, que este galardón es más nominal que meramente musical. Es decir, que tiene como objetivo tan solo promover superficialmente a algunos artistas, mientras premia y cataloga a otros, que quizá mucho sentido no tendría que estén. Este es el caso de Eminem, por ejemplo. Que si bien, es una figura dentro de su género (el rap, que su vez está dentro de la cultura del Hip Hop) mucho no guarda relación con el propósito del rock and roll. El año pasado, pasó otra polémica que yo francamente jamás podré comprender. Iron Maiden, fue completamente ignorado y sencillamente no fue admitido dentro del Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll. Decisiones, que no muchas personas que amamos este género (rock) podemos compartir, y mucho menos entender del todo.
Now, I can understand that there are many artists who throughout their lives have made incredible contributions to the culture of American and world music, but it doesn't make much sense to call an award with such a powerful, meaningful and sublime name, and then distort the award a little and forget emblems of this genre or take so long to recognise the great exponents of this sound all over the world. But mainly, those bands that are not American. Because, that's the pattern you notice.... There are great exceptions, but it would be immense madness if they had been ignored as well: like the cases I exposed a couple of lines above in the post...
Ahora bien, puedo entender que hay muchos artistas que a lo largo de su vida han hecho aportes increíbles para la cultura de la música americana y mundial, pero mucho sentido lógico no tiene llamar aún, llamar a un galardón con un nombre tan poderosos, significativo y sublime, para luego desvirtuar un poco la mis premiación y olvidar a emblemas de este género o tardar tanto en reconocer a los grandes exponentes de este sonido en todo el mundo. Pero principalmente, a aquellas bandas que no son estadounidenses. Porque, ése es el patrón que se nota... Hay grandes excepciones, pero es que sería una inmensa locura que también los hubiesen ignorado: como los casos que expuse un par de líneas arriba en el post...
However, Judas Priest, as a band is not only guaranteed to go down in the history books of music, art, culture and production; but in the history books. This band has been together since the 70's, with an openly gay vocalist (pioneering even inclusivity). And yes, long before Queen or David Bowie) and that for today's sense of how we perceive rock and roll is simply fundamental. From their outfits, comes the much promulgated cult of the colour black for the genre. That is, they were the first to normalise and standardise the colour to identify with the rock and roll cultural and musical movement. So every time you see a band flannel, anywhere, think of these guys.
For decades they have been there, with their rough, melodic sound, loaded with a voice second to none, they have made an impact all over the world and generation after generation of new musicians and trends, they are still intact, incomparable and authentic. Do you know how hard it is to stay this cool and powerful? How much it costs? And the fact is, I will never tire of saying it? While it has been normalised to associate LGBTQ+ people with "weakness", "pseudo-sensitivity" and "abnormality", these guys (mainly Judas Priest frontman/vocalist Rob Halford) have been at the absolute forefront. Shattering prejudices and on the contrary, promoting that music, good music (within rock and roll) has no "weakness" and is no less than anything or anyone else.
No obstante, Judas Priest, como banda no sólo tiene garantizada su entrada en los libros de historia de la música, el arte, la cultura y la producción; sino en la trayectoria. Esta banda ha permanecido junta desde los 70's, con un vocalista abiertamente homosexual (siendo pioneros, incluso en la inclusividad. Y sí, mucho antes de Queen o David Bowie) y que para el sentido actual de cómo percibimos el rock and roll es sencillamente fundamental. De sus outfits, viene el culto tan promulgado al color negro para el género. Es decir, ellos fueron los primeros que normalizaron y estandarizaron el color para identificarse con la movida cultural y musical del rock and roll. Así que cada vez que veas una franela de alguna banda, en cualquier lugar piensa en estos muchachos.
Durante décadas han estado ahí, con su sonido áspero, melódico y cargado de una voz insuperable, que han impactado en todo el mundo y que generación tras generación de nuevos músicos y tendencias, aún continúan intactos, incomparables y auténticos ¿Saben lo duro que es mantenerse así de geniales y poderosos? ¿Lo mucho que cuesta? Y es que, jamás me cansaré de decirlo... Mientras ha sido normalizado asociar al colectivo LGBTQ+ con la "debilidad", "la pseudo-sensibilidad" y lo "anormal", estos tipos (principalmente Rob Halford, vocalista y líder de Judas Priest) ha estado en la más absoluta vanguardia. Destrozando prejuicios y al contrario, promoviendo que la música, la buena música (dentro del rock and roll) no tiene "debilidad" ni es menos que nada o nadie.
A brave, inclusive, authentic and extremely forgotten struggle (unfortunately) by many people, but that today I come (at last) to vindicate and pay my homage to. Alice Cooper himself, when introducing them at the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, said it "Before you, the most important and least-regarded band in history. You are living proof that rock and roll is not dead. It never has been, just look at you!". And to contradict those apt and precious words, it's quite difficult. That's why I've decided to do this post. Because I consider it necessary to give honour, recognition and encouragement to those who made us love this genre so much.
Una lucha valiente, inclusiva, auténtica y sumamente olvidada (infortunadamente) por muchísima gente, pero que hoy yo vengo (al fin) a reivindicar y hacer mi homenaje. El mismo Alice Cooper, al presentarlos en la Ceremonia de Inducción al Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll 2022, lo dijo "Antes ustedes, la banda más importante y menos tomada en cuenta de la historia. Son la demostración viva de que el rock and roll no está muerto. Jamás lo ha estado, ¡tan solo mírenlos!". Y contradecir esas acertadas y preciosas palabras, es bastante difícil. Por eso, he decidido hacer este post. Porque considero necesario brindar honor, reconocimiento y aliento a quienes hicieron que amáramos tanto a este género.
Judas Priest, a band that always "broke the law" and remained current, demanding, with the best audio quality standards and with the indisputable legacy of being one of the best bands that have ever released an album, ever. Simply put, they are geniuses. And as such, we must surrender to the evidence and be thankful that today we can enjoy them as perhaps no other generation ever could. Everything we need is just a click or a bandwidth away. It has never been easier to be interconnected and to share what we love with whomever we want to share it with. So, to answer my own rhetorical question, yes I believe there is and always will be controversy about this award but I'd rather they take too long than never recognise the heroes and geniuses of our beloved genre.
In the end, that's what it all comes down to. That things are about justice and what is real. I don't care if one day Lady Gaga or Bad Bunny get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I might even share certain aspects of those choices, but so should (always) be those who have done so much, for so many years (decades) for this sound (rock). Eddie Van Halen himself, when teaming up with Michael Jackson, did one of the best riffs and solos ever with the unforgettable "Beat It" for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. So being fundamentalists doesn't make much sense either. Nevertheless, here we are, reading this post and I am very, very happy to see these monstrous geniuses being recognised. Not for us, who already knew, but for those boys and girls, who may not know much and now will be able to see them and know more. I choose to believe, I choose to trust, I choose Judas Priest and the value of rock and roll.
Judas Priest, una banda que siempre "rompió la ley" y que se mantuvo vigente, exigente, con los mejores estándares de calidad de audio y con el indiscutible legado de ser unas de las mejores bandas que jamás hayan publicado un disco, jamás. Sencillamente, son unos genios. Y como tales, hay que rendirse ante la evidencia y agradecer, que hoy podemos disfrutarlos como quizá ninguna otra generación jamás pudo hacerlo. Todo lo que necesitamos está al alcance de un click o a la distancia de un ancho de banda. Jamás fue más fácil estar interconectado y compartir lo que amamos con quienes sea que queramos hacerlo. Así que, respondiendo mi propia pregunta retórica, pues sí yo creo que hay y siempre habrá polémica en cuanto a este galardón pero prefiero que tarden a que jamás reconozcan a los héroes y genios de nuestro amado género.
Al final, todo se resume a eso. A que las cosas guarden relación con la justicia y lo real. A mí me da igual si un día Lady Gaga o Bad Bunny entran al Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll, podría hasta compartir ciertos aspectos de esas elecciones, pero también deben estar (siempre) quienes han hecho tanto, por tantos años (décadas) por este sonido (el rock). El mismo Eddie Van Halen, al juntarse con Michael Jackson, hizo uno de los mejores riffs y solos de la historia con el inolvidable "Beat It" para el disco "Thriller" de Michael Jackson. Así que ser fundamentalistas tampoco es algo muy lógico. Sin embargo, aquí estamos, leyendo este post y yo muy, muy feliz por ver a estos monstruosos genios ser reconocidos. No para nosotros, que ya lo sabíamos, sino para aquellos chicos y chicas, que quizá no sepan mucho y que ahora podrán verlos y saber más. Elijo creer, elijo confiar, elijo a Judas Priest y el valor del rock and roll.
