The first days of the year 2022 were beginning, it was January; in Venezuela this means that it is the coldest month of the year. And by cold, I mean early mornings with a wind chill of 16, 17 degrees. In those days, curiously enough, I was spending a few weeks in the flat of my best friend, who, to cap this story, was going through a very difficult period of separation from her ex-partner, a serial abuser by the book. But I digress, that's another story.
As I have always been a night person, I still remember that every early morning, in a flat number 15, with panoramic windows, the cold of the early morning was noticeably felt... The hours passed in their usual chronogram; you know, it's daylight in a heartbeat... It's 6:30 a.m. and the imperative need for coffee invades my body. I pick up my mobile phone, which was charging in another room of the flat, and I notice the notifications on WhatsApp, it's the protagonist of this story: Stef.
Comenzaban los primeros días del año 2022, era enero; en Venezuela eso significa que es el mes más frío de todo el año. Y con frío, me refiero a madrugadas de 16, 17 grados de sensación térmica. En aquellos días, curiosamente estaba pasando algunas semanas en el apartamento de mi mejor amiga; que como colofón para esta historia, estaba atravesando una etapa durísima de separación de su ex pareja; un maltratador serial de manual.. Pero me desvío, ésa es otra historia.
Como siempre he sido una persona nocturna, pues aún recuerdo que cada madrugada, en un piso número 15, con ventanas panorámicas, hacía que el frío de la madrugada se sintiese notablemente... Las horas transcurrieron su habitual cronograma; ya sabes, en un suspiro se hace de día... Son las 6:30 a.m y la necesidad imperativa de tomar café invade mi cuerpo. Cojo el celular, que se estaba cargando en otra habitación del apartamento, y noto las notificaciones en el WhatsApp, es la protagonista de esta historia: Stef.
Given the time she wrote to me, you'd think she was out partying, having a really good time. But no, I wish she had been.... She, like me, was a hopeless night owl. But she enjoyed her nights playing like a gamer. Hours and hours. She didn't seem to mind, haha. However, I notice that out of nowhere, out of context and without warning she says to me, "Hey, Jesus, you gotta hear this album, man..." I, somewhat dismayed, reply, "Of course, Fefi, I will ....". The truth is that I had other things on my mind....
I waited until a little later, so as not to disturb the neighbours with the bugle blaring so early in the morning. Anyway, I took the opportunity to prepare a gigantic thermos of coffee and get to work (yes, in Hive. At that time I was more of a regular on the platform than I am now...). I remember it was about mid-morning, like 9:00 or 10:00 a.m., and I connect the WhatsApp to the laptop, so that at the same time it plays the link that Fefi sent me to YouTube and I can hear it without problems through the speaker I used at that time. What I was about to hear simply blew me away....
En vista de la hora que me escribió, cualquiera pensaría que estaba de fiesta, pasándola realmente bien. Pero no, ojalá hubiese sido así... Ella, al igual que yo, era una noctámbula sin remedio. Pero ella disfrutaba sus noches jugando como toda una gamer. Horas y horas. Parecía no importarle, jaja. Sin embargo, noto que de la nada, sin contexto y sin previo aviso me dice: "Hey, Jesús, tienes que oír este álbum, amigo..." Yo, algo consternado le respondo: "¡Por supuesto, Fefi, lo haré...." Lo cierto es que tenía en mente otras cosas...
Esperé que se hiciera un poco más tarde, para no molestar a los vecinos con la corneta a todo volumen tan temprano. De igual manera, aproveché para poder preparar un termo gigantesco de café y ponerme a trabajar (sí, en Hive. En aquella época era más asiduo a la plataforma de lo que ahora soy...). Recuerdo que era algo así como de medía mañana, tipo 9:00 ó 10:00 a.m, y conecto e WhatsApp a la laptop, para que al mismo tiempo reproduzca el enlace que Fefi me envió al YouTube y pueda oírlo sin problemas a través del speaker que usaba en aquella época. Lo que estaba por oír, sencillamente me dejó sin habla...
I've never been a fan of The Weeknd's pop music. In fact, all the women I know really like what the "Blinding Lights" guy does, but not so much me. The truth is that at the time, I was going through a moment of discovery of black music. That is to say, rhythms beyond rock and roll. In fact, Earth, Wind and Fire completely blew my mind. I loved their arrangements in their songs, and not to mention Lord Michael Jackson in his post-Jackson Five phase; total insanity...
The truth is that what my friend had sent me was a link to the newly released album on the platform (remember, we're talking about YouTube). It was, at most, no more than 8 hours old since this new album was officially released. The name of the album is "Dawn FM", and remember what I thought of The Weeknd? Well, ever since I heard that piece of art, I had to swallow my own words. So much so, that I had to thank my friend Fefi for such a wonderful contribution. I don't know how or, even more interestingly, why, but she decided to send me that link. And I am immensely grateful.
Nunca he sido un fanático del pop que hace The Weeknd. De hecho, a todas las mujeres que conozco sí que les gusta lo que hace el bueno de "Blinding Lights" pero no tanto a mí. Lo cierto, es que en aquél momento, estaba atravesando un momento de descubrimiento de música negra. Es decir, de ritmos más allá del rock and roll. De hecho Earth, Wind and Fire me volaba la cabeza por completo. Amaba sus arreglos en sus canciones, y ni hablar de Lord Michael Jackson en su etapa post Jackson Five; una demencia total...
Lo cierto es que lo que mi amiga me había enviado era un enlace al álbum recién lanzado en la plataforma (recuerden, hablamos de YouTube). Tenía, a lo sumo, no más de 8 horas de haberse lanzado oficialmente este nuevo disco. El nombre del álbum es "Dawn FM", Y, ¿se recuerdan de lo que pensaba de The Weeknd? Pues, desde que escuché esa obra de arte, tuve que tragarme mis propias palabras. Tanto así, que tuve que darle las gracias a mi amiga Fefi por tan maravillosa contribución. No sé cómo ni, aún más interesante, por qué pero ella decidió enviarme ese enlace. Y yo lo agradezco inmensamente.
It is curious how an ordinary gesture, which on the surface would not seem to have any transcendental or inspirational value, is today the starting point for this post and this tribute to her. In August of that same year (2022) my friend died. How? Honestly, even I am not able to fully understand it. One day she fell ill, went to the hospital, was admitted as an emergency, then they decided to operate and there, in the middle of a strange, distant and cold operating theatre, the flame of one of the funniest, genuinely funny women I have ever met was extinguished. She was a girl... She was only 22 years old.
I still don't understand how a woman so full of life could have gone like that, so cruelly and so quickly.... I remember learning of her passing through my cousin. In fact, in strict justice, she was far more my younger cousin's friend than mine. But we developed an affinity for that very thing, music made by black people. She loved blues, hip hop and especially pop like Michael Jackson, The Weeknd or The Village People. I always admired her for having such an old soul as a beautiful, young girl....
Es curioso, como un gesto usual, que en apariencia no tendría que tener ningún valor trascendental o inspirador, hoy sea el pistoletazo inicial para este post y este homenaje hacia ella. En agosto de ese mismo años (2022) moría mi amiga ¿Cómo? Honestamente, ni yo mismo soy capaz de entenderlo del todo. Un día cayó enferma, fue al hospital, la ingresaron de emergencia, luego decidieron operar y allí, en medio de un quirófano extraño, distante y frío se apagó la flama de una de las mujeres más graciosas, genuinamente divertidas que haya conocido. Era una nena... Tenía tan sólo 22 años.
Aún no comprendo cómo una mujer tan llena de vida pudo haberse ido así, con tanta crueldad y rapidez... Recuerdo enterarme de su fallecimiento a través de mi primo. De hecho, en estricta justicia, ella era muchísimo más amiga de mi primo menor que mía. Pero desarrollamos afinidad por eso mismo, la música hecha por negros. Ella amaba el blues, el hip hop y sobre todo el pop como Michael Jackson, The Weeknd o The Village People. Siempre la admiré por tener esa alma tan de viejos siendo una nenita hermosa y joven...
As I write this, I won't lie to you, I'm not having a good time. I've never let this out before. It's time, I guess... But it's unfair how something as beautiful as she is is gone so quickly and suddenly. I'm not someone who puts out too much. Clearly, I'm better at reading and analysing others than I am myself. Maybe because I know how to take care of myself too well and not show myself to be vulnerable. However, today, the first days of September 2023, one year after her cruel departure from this world, and listening to the song that brought us together (Sacrifice by The Weeknd), I couldn't let it go. I had to remember her and I hope I am worthy of her memory. Rest peacefully, Fefi beautiful, you know I miss you very much.
Mientras escribo esto, no les mentiré, no la paso nada bien. Nunca había dejado salir esto. Es momento, supongo... Pero es injusto como algo tan hermoso, como lo es ella, se haya ido tan rápido y súbitamente. No soy alguien que exteriorice demasiado. Claramente, soy mejor para leer y analizar a los demás que a mí mismo. Quizá por el mismo hecho de saber cuidarme demasiado bien y no mostrarme vulnerable. Sin embargo, hoy, primeros días de septiembre del 2023, a un años de su cruel ida de este mundo, y oyendo la canción que nos unió (Sacrifice por The Weeknd), no podía dejarlo pasar. Debía recordarla y espero sea digno de su recuerdo. Descansa Fefi hermosa, bien sabes que te echo muchísimo de menos.
