Seattle, one of the most legendary and important cities in the history of rock music worldwide. It is solely responsible for having been home to bands of a genre that radically changed the planet. Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are just some of the bands that today, more than 30 years later, we can classify as the "Big Four" of the grunge movement. But they, Soundgarden, stood out from the rest in several ways; the main one being that no band had a voice like Chris Cornell's or the level of sharpness in their lyrics. In addition, they exploited the more psychedelic and mystical aspect of that particular style of alternative rock.

Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam y Soundgarden, son tan solo algunas de esas agrupaciones que hoy, más de 30 años después podemos catalogarlos como el "Big Four" del movimiento grunge. Pero ellos, los Soundgarden destacaron del resto por varios aspectos; pero siendo el principal que ninguna banda tenía una voz como la de Chris Cornell ni el nivel de agudeza en las letras. Además, ellos explotaron el aspecto más psicodélico y místico de ese estilo de rock alternativo en particular.
Some of you may wonder why I've been breaking down each of the rock bands that made grunge so unique, powerful and unforgettable, and the truth is all too simple: they are simply a weakness, which I'm afraid I can't master. And in this sense, I also find the decade of the 90's so unique in so many ways, that it's simply not easy, fair or adequate to categorise it with an adjective. You see, Soundgarden was one of those bands that always stood out for having a sound that was so strange and difficult to assimilate right off the bat. Their chords, within their songwriting, were not common; or corresponded to the punk or metal rhythms from which other bands drew their influences, but were more leisurely but angry at the same time.
A combination that quickly became a trademark of the band. And even to this day it is a challenge to cover or match. Quite simply, the voice register of the late Chris Cornell is ridiculously good and absurdly incomparable. While it was high-pitched, it could also be quite heavy metal without falling into the genre-characteristic falsetto of Iron Maiden or Helloween. However, the pause between verses and sometimes the recited (not sung) way of performing a song is something that added so much more mysticism and character to the lyrics and the intentionality of the band. And, in fact, a proof of what I am telling you, you can see it in the song: "Fell On Black Days" but also in parts of "Spoonman".
Algunos de ustedes se preguntaran por qué he ido desglosando a cada una de las bandas de rock que hicieron al grunge tan único, poderoso e inolvidable, y la verdad es demasiado simple: sencillamente son una debilidad, que me temo, no puedo dominar. Y en este sentido, también la década de los 90's me parecen tan única en tantos sentidos, que sencillamente no es sencillo, justo o adecuado poder categorizarla con un adjetivo. Verán, Soundgarden fue una de esas bandas que siempre se destacó por poseer un sonido tan extraño y difícil de asimilar de buenas a primeras. Sus acordes, dentro de la composición de las canciones no eran comunes; o correspondían con el ritmo punk o metal de donde las otras bandas cogían sus influencias, sino que era más pausado pero iracundo al mismo tiempo.
Una combinación que rápidamente se transformó en un sello de la banda. E incluso, hasta hoy es todo un reto para versionar o igualar. Sencillamente, el registro de voz que tenía el fallecido Chris Cornell, es ridículamente bueno y absurdamente incomparable. Si bien era aguda, también podía ser bastante heavy metal sin caer en los falsetes característicos del género de Iron Maiden o Helloween. Sin embargo, la pausa entre los versos y a veces la forma recitada (no cantada) de ejecutar un tema es algo que añadía muchísimo más misticismo y carácter a las letras y a la intencionalidad de la banda. Y es que, de hecho una prueba de lo que les digo, la pueden ver en el tema: "Fell On Black Days" pero también en partes de "Spoonman".
Likewise, one of the most relevant aspects of Soundgarden's musicology is the subject of suicide and the dark lyrics full of despair in the face of a life full of non-conformity. And let's remember that the members of the bands that made Grunge world famous were kids from broken homes, from people who didn't master the environment they grew up in, let alone were loved children. All of this took too much of a toll on each of them, and that is what we see, to a greater or lesser extent, in the compositions of this genre. Also, Soundgarden has one of the best songs about emotional emptiness I've ever heard: "Black Hole Sun". While it was their biggest hit, it's also a great song.
Asimismo, uno de los aspectos más relevantes de todos dentro de la musicología de Soundgarden es el tema del suicidio y de las letras oscuras y llenas de desesperanza ante una vida repleta de inconformidad. Y es que, recordemos que los integrantes de las bandas que hicieron al Grunge mundialmente famoso, eran chicos de hogares rotos, de personas que no dominaban el entorno donde crecieron y menos aún, fueron niños amados. Todo esto hizo demasiado mella en cada uno de ellos, y eso es lo que vemos, en mayor o menor medida dentro de las composiciones de este género. Además, Soundgarden tiene una de las mejores canciones sobre el vacío emocional que jamás haya escuchado: "Black Hole Sun". Si bien, fue su mayor éxito, también es una temazo.
Now, it is always challenging to put into words what we feel as intangible. Simply finding a way to describe the love that some bands provoke in you is something that can be as poetic as it is romantic. Obviously, no one can really convey what the pleasure of music feels like. But we can learn to feel, learn to empathise, and in the case of Soundgarden, the feeling in every scream from Chris or every power-packed, psychedelic riff from Kim Thayil, and the restless rumble of Matt Cameron on drums, creates a feeling that borders on perfection and touches with the significance it can be.
Obviously, we love music, or at least I do. And in it the refuge is always cosy. There is no need to run away, on the contrary, one can rest without thinking too much. For any mood or feeling, there will always be a song to accompany you. From 1984 to 2019, this amazing rock and roll band was with us. The themes of their songs, unfortunately, were a vision of the foreboding that awaited Cornell, and that we regret so much today, but as he himself says in one of his most beautiful lyrics, within his song The Day I Tried To Live: "I woke the same/ As any other day except a voice was in my head/ It said. "Seize the day/ Pull the trigger/ drop the blade and watch the rolling heads"...
Ahora bien, siempre es desafiante poner en palabras lo que sentimos como intangible. Sencillamente, hallar el modo para describir el amor que algunas bandas provocan en ti, es algo que puede ser tan poético como romántico. Obviamente, nadie puede realmente transmitir lo que se siente el placer de la música. Pero sí podemos aprender a sentir, aprender a empatizar y en el caso de Soundgarden, el sentimiento en cada grito de Chris o cada riff cargado de poder y psicodelia de Kim Thayil, y el retumbe inquieto de Matt Cameron en la batería, crean una sensación que roza la perfección y conmueve con los significante que puede llegar a ser.
Obviamente, amamos la música,; o al menos yo la adoro. Y en ella el refugio siempre es acogedor. No hay que huír, sino todo lo contrario, uno puede descansar sin pensar demasiado. Para cualquier ánimo o sentimiento, siempre habrá una canción que te acompañe. Desde 1984 hasta el 2019, esta increíble banda de rock and roll estuvo con nosotros. Las temáticas de sus canciones, infortunadamente, fueron una visión del presagio que le esperaba a Cornell, y que hoy tanto lamentamos, pero como él mismo dice en una de sus letras más bellas, dentro de su canción The Day I Tried To Live: "I woke the same/ As any other day except a voice was in my head/ It said. "Seize the day/ Pull the trigger/ drop the blade and watch the rolling heads"...
As you can already infer at this point, there are lives, voices and talents that fade too quickly, and others that seem like they will live forever... In this case, although the sadness of Chris Cornell's absence weighs heavy, I prefer to focus on Soundgarden's legacy and try to never forget them. They simply don't deserve it, and it's enough to listen to them just once to fall under the spell that they have and always will have. They were, and in my opinion, will always be a spectacular, unique and completely special band, that marked millions of lives and will have the respect and admiration of all lovers of good music.
Como pueden ya inferir en este punto, hay vidas, voces y talentos que se apagan demasiado rápido, y otros que parecen que vivirán por siempre... En este caso, aunque la tristeza por la ausencia de Chris Cornell pese, prefiero concentrarme en el legado de Soundgarden y tratar de jamás olvidarlos. Sencillamente, no lo merecen, y es que solo basta con escucharles una vez para caer en el hechizo atrapante que tienen y que siempre tendrán. Fueron, y a mí modo de ver, siempre serán una banda espectacular, única y completamente especial, que marcó millones de vidas y poseerá el respeto y la admiración de los amantes de la buena música.
