I think lot of this energy actually comes from the Linux enthusiasts and Valve. Valve could build their platform on Windows, but then they would be depending on Microsoft, perhaps Microsoft could even push them somwhere where they don't want to go. With Linux they have their own independent system (linux distribution) based on very extensible Arch Linux. They can literally do what they want and users get excellent flexibility and "tinkering" space.
Of course, there are downsides, but when managed the overall result can be actually very postitive.
