A few days ago, I visited a stunning natural gem tucked away in the hills not far from Yousmarg—a tranquil lake known for its surreal blue waters and dense forest cover that cradles it in serene silence. Situated around 40 kilometers from Srinagar, this lake—Nilnag—is not only scenic but steeped in cultural and historical importance. The route itself is a dream for nature lovers, winding through valleys and pine-covered slopes that offer spectacular views all along the way.
Nilnag spans nearly one and a half square kilometers and, until recently, remained relatively untouched. On weekends, especially during the warmer months, the area attracts many visitors looking for calm, beauty, and a break from the chaos of city life. Its natural charm lies in its unspoiled atmosphere and the mirror-like reflection of tall coniferous trees on the water’s surface—an enchanting sight during sunset when golden hues dance across the ripples.
This lake holds a special place in the region’s folklore and memory. The renowned British researcher Eric Biscoe, who traveled through the area in the early 1900s, was so enamored by Nilnag that he wished to be buried by its shores—a wish honored by his family. His final resting place on the southwestern bank adds a historical depth that enhances the site’s spiritual pull.
The lake’s name says it all—‘Nil’ meaning blue, and ‘Nag’ meaning lake—aptly describing its clear, cobalt waters. One can sit by its edge for hours, losing track of time as the breeze soothes the soul. For many of us, this space offers a rare kind of therapy—a deep, natural stillness that restores what urban life often drains.
However, what should be a haven for rejuvenation is now suffering under the weight of careless human activity. Despite its pristine past, Nilnag is slowly becoming a dumping ground for plastic waste—bottles, wrappers, and other pollutants carelessly discarded by tourists who fail to recognize their impact. Watching the lake struggle under this burden is heartbreaking. It feels like an act of violence against nature itself, and the absence of proper regulation or surveillance only worsens the situation.
Though my friends and I make an effort to clean up the area’s surroundings when we visit, the trash that ends up inside the water remains beyond reach. With no boats or even floating platforms available, our attempts are limited. This growing concern has pushed me to take further steps, and in the coming days, we’re organizing a volunteer-driven cleanliness drive focused entirely on restoring Nilnag’s beauty.
The initiative is close to my heart. It will likely take a full day to gather and responsibly dispose of the accumulated waste, but we are determined. Beyond preserving the environment, this effort also supports local livelihoods. Many residents in the area depend on the lake—economically and emotionally—as it remains one of their few sustainable means of income.
We hope to collaborate with these local communities, as they have a vested interest in safeguarding the lake’s future. Their knowledge of the place and dedication to its well-being make them natural allies in this mission.
