Big band season is here again and we don’t have much time to prepare for the first concert. The drummer is new and kinda cool, but gets out of control loud, lost, knows everything… same as the guy before. The guy from before is back again excecpt as a “conga player.”
Everybody loves a trumpet players lips, so we’re doing some music that I would consider difficult for bass.
Most people and the original version are in the key of E. This makes it easy for the bass to use its lowest open string for an wasy octave transition. The part I have pictured in the text message screenshot is in F, a half step up, and on the first and 8th fret.
My options of approach are
- use a new 5 string bass I am trying to force myself to use anyway... 😬
Or - Becoame a master a jumping between these octaves and maybe make it a slide variation upon the part.
I guess I’ll start off by doing both for now. Finally having a legitimate reason to use a five string base is cool, but I know back in the 70s if someone had to jump between F octaves, they would’ve done it, they would’ve figured it out, my bass idols (that hopefully were not on Epstein Island) probably jump octave correctly.
Dictation hates me and “advantaged” should be “that bands should never do.”
