Another important aspect of forming habits and reaching your goals is understanding that life will throw curveballs at you once in a while.
This is the reason why you need to negotiate (with yourself) and define the terms of dealing with those obstacles in advance.
Your mind plays tricks with you! You have to do the same with your mind! So that an amazing streak of improvement would not come to an end just because you got sick for a few days.
As I wrote in my previous blog post, my first habit that I am trying to form is achieving 10.000 steps every day.
I realize that there might be days when I can't reach this goal for some unexpected reason. If that happens I oblige myself to pay that day's debt in full in the following 30 days by achieving 10k extra steps in addition to my daily 10k steps (i.e. minimum 20k total in one day, and not just the difference that I was short to 10k). If I'd miss multiple days each day would have it's own countdown to the deadline.
This approach might look silly but I actually failed pretty good streaks of improvement and accomplishments exactly for this reason. For your mind and motivation there is no difference if you failed because you were lazy or because your close relative died.
Laziness is easy to overcome (and I am setting myself to do that with this blog). The latter one - not so much.
Be aware of that and don't let those curveballs destroy your progress!
