The East Coast Low has set in - rain everywhere. I had hoped to do a train trip to Blue Mountains on free trains day. Too wet to do that. Got stuck at home doing stuff while the rain was mild
Did get a train up to Berowra to walk a track I have not walked. Armed with umbrella and shopping bags to buy fish on the way home. Photo is a reminder of a road I cycled a lot - down to Berowra Waters for the ferry and ride back
The track today - access Berkeley Trail from the village and loop along Great North Walk
Some steep stairs to get down the cliffs. Homeless person at the top of the stairs- they bother me as their actions are very unpredictable. Photo down the track reminds one that every track becomes a creek
The Great North Walk loops between the railway stations. You can avoid the ups and downs between stations by just walking the track
August time - what flowers to expect - dampiera purpurea with rain drops
Red five corners with rain drops. The leaves are in focus
Sydney boronia coming on well
Lambertia formosa and a wet track looking like it was out early
Budding wattle and the wet track - glad to say it was not raining here
Woolsia pungens
First of the spider grevilleas for the season
This little star flower is tiny - the guide suggests it is an epacris - maybe NSW coral heath flower. Smaller than a US penny and only one flower
Did find evidence of orchids - probably helmet orchid leaves
The rain started just as I hit the main Great North Walk on Sams Trail - good news on two counts. Trail is wide enough to use the umbrella and I see on the map a fire trail going up to the village. Just beyond the You Are Here marker to the left. Taking that
Was a welcome sign - I had studied the map and my wife did knew where I started the walk. Rain was coming down now
Found this seeded helmet orchid under a log. Good thing I did the photo and memorised this as I left my camera phone when I grabbed the umbrella being dragged down by the wind
Not very far along was this orchid on the edge of the fire trail. Oops - no camera - mark the spot - go back - get camera - take photo. The orchid - tall greenhood - bunochilus longifolia. One of two at this spot
Always good to find an orchid on a track not walked before. Next time I will ride the bike to where I came out of the bush and walk from there. Not doing those steep steps again
Last photo of the journey - NSW rail ran two free days - my train rides were free. Used that as I missed my stop going home and rode two more. Bought fish for dinner there and trained back.
Sure was wet when I got home - but I did have a new orchid, a lesson or two and fish for dinner
Dinner: Salmon sous vide - prawns tomorrow
My son's mother sent me a photo of my granddaughter - she visited them today
