Tuesday was all about the Club World Cup semifinal for my Chelsea FC against Brazilian side Fluminense. Since the game was scheduled for 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon, there was still decent access for reasonable prices to the fan tickets to sit in the official Chelsea section in the lower area. Such a bargain for $40, but the 95-degree sunny heat was draining.
The commute on the subway to the bus took about 90 minutes to get from Brooklyn to the stadium over the Hudson River in New Jersey. Plenty of walking to get from station to station and then through the American Dream mall to the parking lot where the New Yorrk Blues were getting together to tailgate. I left the house around 9.15am and got to the lots at 11am. We must have totaled over 100 people when we were at full throttle.
The game itself couldn't have gone much better. Our newest signing, Brazilian Joao Pedro scored two goals on his first Chelsea start to beat the Brazilian team he played for growing up. The defense kept a very tidy clean sheet in the hot summer sun for a comfy 2-0 win. The winner of Real Madrid v. Paris SG await Chelsea in the final.
But that one I'll be watching from home... with some air-conditioning! Between all the steps and the blazing sun, that game really took it out of me. I needed more electrolytes badly. I suffered, but not in silence. We were on our feet and singing for the Chelsea for just about the full 90 minutes. Best match atmosphere I've ever been a part of. Hopefully we can pull off the upset in the finals. Up the Chelsea! Until next time...
