The weather is really good right now. It's good for my mood, even though I know I shouldn't let the weather affect my moods.
We are back to working on our tiny house. On Thursday, we drove 350km from Normandy to our little piece of paradise, stopping by a hardware store to buy:
- Wooden boards to put over the existing caravan floor (to strengthen it).
- Screws.
- Supplies for painting the walls.
- Vinegar to clean the walls and to repel spiders and rodents, which apparently don't like the smell.
- Protective tarps and masking tape to use before painting.
Upon arriving, we were struck by the number of fish we saw in our pond.
We were really happy to finally be able to see them.
Since the beginning of spring, we had been hearing splashes in the water without ever managing to see them.
With the brush cutter, I remade some paths on our land.
In front of our tiny house, I cut everything because it makes it look neat.
But on the rest, I only make paths. This allows the rest to remain as wild meadow and helps preserve biodiversity.
Additionally, it has an idyllic aspect to walk through grassy passages.
I made a complete circuit around the pond so we could walk there. And I made some other paths on the property that lead to places we use or plan to use more often.
Meanwhile, @altheana completely cleared the tiny house of all the clutter.
Honestly, at first, I let her do it and thought she would ask for help with some odds and ends.
There were really very heavy and bulky items to carry, including a bed base.
But no, she really did it all by herself, and I am really proud of her. Especially since I would probably have asked for help if I were in her place!
She then swept thoroughly and made two mats for the entrance so we could wipe our feet before coming in.
These are temporary mats just for the duration of the construction, but I really appreciated the idea.
While she was tarping the floor in preparation for painting the walls, I went up to the converted van to hang out the sheets that had come out of the washing machine and to fetch a wooden board from the van.
There is about 200 meters of downhill along a country path to get back to the tiny house. Carrying a wooden board in the heat, it was really not easy.
By the time I got down, I was sweating profusely.
Instead of rebuilding the caravan floor from scratch (which would have taken a lot of time), we opted for an alternative solution:
- Apply a waterproofing coating to the existing floor to minimize moisture.
- Cover this floor with another 18mm floor to add strength.
There's just the hole (visible in other of my posts), which we still don't know how to handle. We have an idea, but we still need to think it over a bit.
Cutting the first board was not simple because the corner of the caravan wall is rounded. There was also a wheel arch to consider.
But after some calculations and cutting with a jigsaw, here is the first board installed.
Then, @altheana asked me for help to unscrew a piece of furniture in another room of the tiny house.
It wasn't easy to dismantle, and it required one person to hold it and another to unscrew.
Once that was done, she thoroughly washed a wall with vinegar.
We do this to drive away spiders and to clean the wall before applying paint. I'm not sure if it's a good idea, but at the very least it disinfects, which is not a bad thing.
And finally, it was already late, so we had to bring everything indoors to go up and prepare dinner.
We thought we could get more done, but having started at 3 p.m. and with the many things we had to do, it's actually not too bad!
