My wife has taken up singing lessons and she has also enrolled our son in a class. At 7 he is just going with the flow and doing what he is told. It is a bit too early to know if he likes it or not but from the moment he could talk he has been singing. As a toddler, my wife and I would stand outside his bedroom door in tears of loving pride listening as he sang himself to sleep with songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and other nursy rhymes.
As he grew It was always interesting to see what songs would attract him. Mainly it was the ones with striking videos as most of our music was coming through Youtube at the time.
He was a very windy baby and this first song was always played before we put him down for the night as we tried to tire him out and jump him around to shake the farts out of him.
Shake it off by Taylor swift
Little does Taylor know that her music was used as a great remedy for colic. Its pure pop and Fintan was popping along. Our neighbours probably thought we were mad as the song would strike up and the whole building would vibrate while as a family we would lep around the living room night after night.
Thank you Miss Swift, Your song gave us hours of degassing.
Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush
I remember when Fintan could first work out the controls for our media playerm he would spend hours looping this song and video as he danced around trying to emulate Kate's ever move. Singing at the top of his lungs in perfect harmony with this wonderful white witch.
We didn't know if we had produced a singer or a dancer. (Writer breaking in here .. Fintan just passed by my office on his way to the toilet and heard me listening to this song as I write this post. Immediately he started to sing along. He's still got it. Can still hit those high notes.
Bonus track
I had to include this here as it came up while searching for the song and lead me down a rabbit hole as I discovered there is a whole world of people crazy about the song and wanting to move to it. It seems that this is a yearly event that happens all over the world. Fintan you trendsetter, you!
Hey Jude by the Beatles
Fintan had not heard this song till just last week when his music teacher, Sarah suggested he learn to sing it. I sit near him during the lessons, for support and to try and keep him from messing.
As Sarah played the notes on a piano and tried to teach him line by line, it was so interesting to hear what he thought it should sound like. Sometimes he was exactly on point with Paul McCartney other times he went off on his own, filling in the notes as he saw fit. Manys a time I actually thought it sounded better like he was breaking the rules to create his own version. I was very proud and thought it would be a great experiment to just let it be and not let him hear the song until he had perfected his own rendition. I suggested it after class but Sarah wanted him to practice and study the song for homework.
Pity, we could have been sitting on the fifth Beatle.
That's it for this week. I really had no idea what Tunes to choose when I sat down but this post seemed to just write itself.
