El día de hoy no nos alejamos mucho de la música onírica, ya que vamos a hablar del inicio de uno de los artistas más populares en el campo de la Neo-psychedelia y el pop psicodélico actualmente.
Como ya vieron en el título, hoy hablaremos de Kevin Parker, mejor conocido por ser el lider de Tame Impala, y su primer álbum: Innerspeaker.

Today we are not getting further off dreamlike music, because we are going to talk about the beggining of one of the most popular artists of Neo-psychedelia and Psychedelic pop.
As you read in the title, today we will talk about Kevin Parker, better known for being the leader of Tame Impala, and his debut album: Innerspeaker.

Tame Impala es el proyecto musical de Kevin Parker, multi-instrumentista que en el año 2007 decidió salir a la luz con su primer trabajo; un EP llamado simplemente Tame Impala.
Parker se ha ganado el respeto del público al crear obras pulidas a detalle, que envuelven al oyente en un mundo que se siente increíblemente producido, logrando reflejar sentimientos tales como la soledad, la inseguridad y la dificultad de relacionarse socialmente en su música.

Canciones de sus álbumes posteriores como Why Won't They Talk To Me? o la reconocida The Less I Know the Better plasman la inseguridad constante que sufre Parker como persona asocial en un mundo social. Se sienten como mensajes directos con los cuales cualquiera de nosotros se podría identificar, utilizando el género de la Neo-psychedelia para narrarnos estos pensamientos íntimos de él como un buen viaje.

Tame Impala is the musical project of Kevin Parker, multi-instrumentalist who in 2007 decided to come out with his first work; an EP simply called Tame Impala.
Parker has earned the public's respect by creating polished to the last detail works that envelop the listener in a world that feels incredibly produced, managing to reflect emotions such as loneliness, insecurity and the difficulty of relating socially in his music.

Songs from his later albums such as Why Won't They Talk To Me? or the renowned The Less I Know the Better capture the constant insecurity that Parker suffers as an asocial person in a social world. They feel like direct messages that any of us could identify with, using the genre of Neo-psychedelia to narrate these intimate thoughts of his as a sweet trip.

Antes de adentrarnos en Innerspeaker, debemos hablar de cómo Kevin Parker hace música.
Ya que el grabar con varias personas conlleva comprometer sus ideas propias al compartirlas con un equipo, Parker hace su música en su propio estudio, él solo.
Casi toda línea de batería, riff de bajo, y solo de guitarra que escuches en una canción de Tame Impala, ha sido grabada y producida por este hombre.
Esto se siente refrescante a su propia forma, ya que dota a las obras de Tame Impala con un espíritu personal y auténtico.

Before we get into Innerspeaker, we should talk about how Kevin Parker makes music.
Since recording with multiple people involves compromising his own ideas by sharing them with a team, Parker makes his music in his own studio, all by himself. Almost every drum line, bass riff, and guitar solo you hear in a Tame Impala song has been recorded and produced by this man. This feels refreshing in its own way, as it endows Tame Impala's works with a personal and authentic spirit.

El tema central del disco, o al menos uno de los principales, es la duda en uno mismo y la falta de confianza. Kevin fue un adolescente solitario, absorto en su música y en la creación constante de la misma. Se enmancipó alrededor de sus pensamientos y, a pesar de que socializaba con el resto del mundo, era más parecido al sentimiento de ver un desfile desde el balcón de tu casa.

La apertura de este disco, It Is Not Meant to Be, plasma a la perfección este sentimiento de falta de confianza cantando acerca de un amor imposible debido a lo distintos que son los universos de Kevin y dicha chica.
La canción es guiada principalmente por un riff de bajo increíblemente pegajoso, y muchas olas de guitarras creando paredes de ruido.
En la música, una pared de ruido es la mezcla de diversos instrumentos o herramientas musicales que, una vez combinados, crean un ruido general en el cual no eres capaz de distinguir cada sonido por separado. Tame Impala hace un uso increíble de las paredes de ruido, manteniendo esta estética psicodélica.

La desconexión que existe entre tú y el mundo exterior se hace notoria cuando intentas interactuar con este, lo que te lleva a evitarlo; te encierras en tu propia cabeza para evitar sentir esa exclusión evidente. Existes tú, tú, y tú.

The central theme of the album, or at least one of the main ones, is self-doubt and lack of confidence. Kevin was a lonely teenager, absorbed in his music and the constant creation of it. He became engrossed around his thoughts and, although he socialized with the rest of the world, it was more akin to the feeling of watching a parade from the balcony of your house.

The album's opener, It Is Not Meant to Be, perfectly captures this feeling of lack of confidence by singing about an impossible love due to how different Kevin and said girl's universes are.
The song is driven primarily by an incredibly catchy bass riff, and many waves of guitars creating walls of noise.
In music, a wall of noise is the mixture of various instruments or musical tools that, once combined, create an overall noise in which you are not able to distinguish each sound separately. Tame Impala makes incredible use of walls of noise, maintaining this psychedelic aesthetic.

The disconnection that exists between you and the outside world becomes noticeable when you try to interact with it, leading you to avoid it; you lock yourself in your own head to avoid feeling that obvious exclusion. There is you, you, and you.

El aislarte, por razones obvias, trae consigo la soledad. La soledad para muchas personas puede ser algo bueno. No obstante, esta puede llevar a los estratos más recónditos del ser humano, y uno de ellos es sentir que no eres tú mismo.

Alter Ego trata precisamente de esto, y de la despersonificación.
Habla acerca del deseo de socializar, y de unirse a la corriente infrenable que conocemos como sociedad. Sin embargo, tú mismo, como una persona distinta, te niegas esto. Te privas de relacionarte con otros seres vivos por el miedo al qué dirán, o a qué podría pasar, cuando en el proceso el único juzgando eres tú.

Isolating yourself, for obvious reasons, brings loneliness. Loneliness for many people can be a good thing. However, it can lead to the innermost layers of the human being, and one of them is feeling that you are not yourself.

Alter Ego is precisely about this, and about depersonification.
It talks about the desire to socialize, and to join the unstoppable current we know as society. Yet yourself, as a distinct person, deny yourself this. You deprive yourself of relating to other living beings for fear of what they will say, or what might happen, when in the process the only one judging is you.

Una de las pocas pegas que tengo con este álbum, es la obsesión de Kevin por llegar a la perfección.
Algo que en mi opinión es importante en la música, y en el arte en general, es el factor humano. Pequeños errores y fallos son elementos que dotan a una pieza artística de expresividad y originalidad, ya que en el fondo de esos errores nos reflejamos; somos humanos, y como humanos somos imperfectos.

En canciones como Jeremy's Storm, la perfección que tienen dichas grabaciones y la producción tan pulida le quitan autenticidad y, en mi opinión, de cierta forma crean un aura monótona.
Esto es algo que, curiosamente, no se ve en otros álbumes de Tame Impala. Sin ir más lejos, considero a Lonerism todo lo contrario a esta definición.
Es una pena que, enfocándose tanto en la perfección, Kevin abandone lo que hace a su música algo tan disfrutable e interesante.

One of the few drawbacks I have with this album is Kevin's obsession with perfection.
Something that in my opinion is important in music, and in art in general, is the human factor. Small mistakes and fails are elements that endow an artistic piece with expressiveness and originality, since at the bottom of those mistakes we reflect ourselves; we are human, and as humans we are imperfect.

In songs like Jeremy's Storm, the perfection that such recordings have and the polished production take away authenticity and, in my opinion, somehow create a monotonous aura.
This is something that, curiously, is not seen on other Tame Impala albums. Without going any further, I consider Lonerism the complete opposite of this definition.
It's a shame that, by focusing so much on perfection, Kevin abandons what makes his music so enjoyable and interesting.

Innerspeaker es la obra de una persona conflictuada, sola, que intenta expresar la dificultad de existir sintiéndote desconectado de la existencia.
A pesar de que se me haga monótono a veces, es innegable que Kevin Parker logró más que un debut sólido. Hizo un gran álbum. Simplemente no es igual de bueno que sus trabajos posteriores.

Innerspeaker is the work of a troubled, lonely person trying to express the difficulty of existing while feeling disconnected from existence.
Although it gets monotonous to me at times, it is undeniable that Kevin Parker accomplished more than a solid debut. He made a great album. It just isn't as good as his later works.
