Kamasi Washington is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and composer who plays modal jazz, soul jazz, funk, hip hop and electronic music due to his involvement with musicians of different genres, and is called the “High Priest of Sax”. He has collaborated with renowned tenor and soprano saxophonist and songwriter Wayne Shorter, extraordinary trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, legendary pianist McCoy Tyner, remarkable pianist, keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock, and pianist and songwriter Horace Tapscott, all jazz musicians; “Queen of Funk” and ten Grammy Awards winner Chaka Khan; rhythm and blues and soul singer and composer Jeffrey Osborne; singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and record and film producer Quincy Jones; pop/rock singer and record producer PJ Morton; heavy metal singer Mike Muir; singer, rapper and composer Lauryn Hill; singer, rapper and actor Mos Def; songwriter and rapper Nas; percussionist Francisco Aguabella; and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.

Born in Los Angeles to a family of musicians, Washington learned to play clarinet, piano and drums as a child, but at thirteen he decided to switch to tenor saxophone. Then he studied at Hamilton High School Music Academy, where he was the lead tenor saxophonist in the jazz ensemble, joined the Multi School Jazz Band and with other students formed his own Young Jazz Giants quartet.
