In 2017 Washington issued the conceptual EP Harmony of Difference for the independent English label Young Turks, considered a dense and maximalist, yet very accessible, six-movement suite that made several end-of-year best-of lists. The EP is a musical metaphor for human diversity and consists of telling stories through intuitive phrasing and melody rather than exhibitionist chords and scales. Despite the temptation to produce a sequel to his previous album, Washington did a totally different job. In it he explores the philosophical possibilities of the counterpoint technique, which is the relationship established between harmonically interdependent voices (polyphony), but independent in their rhythm and pitch contour, and fills it with stimulating and sophisticated ideas that involve the listener on both a musical and emotional level.
