Could it be said that the general public, the music academy, and even music itself as a multidimensional whole, owes George Harrison an enormous and almost endless amount of recognition for his career, influence and legacy? I start here, because I think we are all indebted to the great George. A guy who was an artist in every sense of the word. Someone who stood by his convictions to the end of his days, and who went under the radar of many, many people, but who should not be overlooked. Without him, The Beatles would not have had the virtuoso and technical touch that, mainly, in their last 4 albums they sustained...
We are talking about a character who, for those who write these lines, represents a superlative, enormous, immeasurable point within musical appreciation. Someone like Harrison, like the "Talented Beatle", a guy who was the youngest of the "Fab Four" but who leaves such a mark, so much to talk about; a power like perhaps no other artist. Someone who, to this day, is often kept behind the curtain. Undeservedly so, since he himself embodied the Liverpool boys' own rhythmic style. There is no White Album, Sargent Pepper or Rubber Soul without this incomparable guitarist, composer, singer, producer and arranger. A complete one-off.

Alguien que se mantuvo con sus convicciones hasta el final de sus días, y que pasó debajo del radar de muchísimas personas pero que no por eso no tenga que ser adecuadamente destacado. Sin él, The Beatles no habrían tenido el toque virtuoso y técnico que, principalmente, en sus últimos 4 discos sostuvieron...
Estamos hablando de un personaje que, para quien les escribe estas líneas, representa un punto superlativo, enorme, inconmensurable, dentro de la apreciación musical. Alguien como Harrison, como el "Beatle Talentoso", un tipo que era el menor de los "Fab Four" pero que deja tanta huella, tanto de qué hablar de él; un poderío como quizá ningún otro artista. Alguien, que hasta en nuestros días, suele mantenerse detrás de la cortina. Inmerecidamente, puesto que él mismo personalizaba esa rítmica propia de los chicos de Liverpool. No hay White Album, Sergeant Pepper ni Rubber Soul sin este inigualable guitarrista, compositor, cantante, productor y arreglista. Un completo fuera de serie.
I want to make a special emphasis on a couple of things. Firstly, I am not implying or saying that there is one Beatle more important than another, nothing like that. Rather, I really want to give a fair measure of the real impact that the greatest rock and pop band of all time had during their active years. But also, without detracting from his own achievements as a soloist and artist, just after the unfortunate separation of the greats in the early 70s. Siendo el menor de todos los Beatles, y además sabiéndose en segundo plano, ya que Paul y John acapararon todos los flashes, 'Georgie'; como le decían sus compañeros, no luchó contra eso. Al contrario, entendió su lugar en la "manada" y permaneció hasta que a él le pareció justo, razonable e inteligente. Algo que yo le admiraré hasta el último día que esté en este planeta. Siempre se le atribuye a Yoko Ono la separación de The Beatles, pero el primer miembro en dejar la banda fue George ¿Por qué? Sencillamente, ya no podía soportar la disputa de egos entre McCartney y Lennon y la prensa mundial.

It was absolutely insane, given that it was a benefit concert for the cause of Bangladesh. He also followed the example set by the likes of Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones in the 1960s by founding a record company, which he named "Dark Horse" and which he used to release his own solo albums.

Si bien, él siempre se declaró un enamorado del rock and roll estadounidense, especialmente del blues proveniente del sur del Misisipi, no menos cierto es que combinó ambas corrientes para definir un sonido que lo caracterizó.
Asimismo, no olvidemos los hitos importantes que este sujeto logró. En primer lugar, fue el primer artista, dentro de la historia de la música, que organizó junto a colegas y compañeros de muchos lugares del planeta un concierto completamente beneficiario. En esa ocasión, fue dentro del reconocido Madison Square Garden, de New York City, y acudieron nada más y nada menos que ¡40.000 personas! Una total locura, dado que era un concierto benéfico para la causa de Bangla Desh. También siguió el ejemplo, que personajes como Mick Jagger de The Rolling Stones inició en la década de los 60's, al fundar una compañía disquera, que nombró "Dark Horse" y que sirvió para publicar sus propios discos como solista.
I would also like to highlight the great influence that Eric Clapton would have, who would firstly be an outstanding fan of Harrison's but who, over the years, would become one of his best friends in his entire life. Together they wrote many songs, did collaborations for both projects and even, in the ex-Beatles' biography, entitled "I Me Mine" he is named multiple times, as opposed to Lennon (yes, I John Lennon) who is completely omitted throughout the book. Why this curious fact occurred will never be fully understood, but what is certain is that almost no Beatle maintained a direct and fluid relationship with John after the split.
Además quiero destacar la gran influencia que tendría Eric Clapton, que sería en primer lugar un destacado fanático de Harrison pero que con los años, se transformaría en uno de sus mejores amigos en toda su vida. Juntos compusieron muchísimo temas, hicieron colaboraciones para ambos proyectos e incluso, en la biografía del ex Beatles, titulada "I Me Mine" es nombrado múltiples veces, en contraposición con Lennon (sí, yo John Lennon) que es completamente omitido en todo el libro. Nunca se sabrá bien por qué ocurrió este curioso hecho, pero lo que es cierto es que casi ningún Beatle sostuvo un trato fluido y directo con John después de la separación.
However, thanks to George Harrison's own initiative, and perhaps because of a certain guilt that our protagonist must have felt (I am not basing this on anything, only on intuition and my personal opinion as a Harrison fan), he and his two colleagues in The Beatles, Paul and Ringo, undertook the last and best album in terms of sound quality and remastering of the "Fab Four", called Anthology. The album was released in the early 90's and featured two unreleased tracks, both of which had the approval of YoKo Ono; they are called "Real Love" and "Free As A Bird". They are available in all the places that currently exist to listen to and publish music, and they also have videos, which I recommend you watch.
Interestingly, after Lennon's death by Mark David Chapman, Harrison was deeply, deeply traumatised. He had lost one of his best and oldest friends, without being able to say goodbye to him, and years later, in 1999 to be precise, he suffered an attack in his own home. This time, he had a better ending than John but would limit his appearances until his sad and much lamented departure in 2002 due to an acute lung cancer that had long afflicted him. He was always a logical man, passionate about music and above all about guitar technique. We can see it in songs like "Something" or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and in countless arrangements that would never have had the greatness they ended up having if it weren't for him.
No obstante, gracias a la iniciativa del propio George Harrison, y quizá a causa de cierta culpa que habrá sentido nuestro protagonista (no me baso en nada, solo en intuición y mi opinión personal como seguidor de Harrison) emprendió junto a sus dos colegas de The Beatles, Paul y Ringo, el último y mejor álbum en cuanto a calidad de sonido y remasterización de los "Fab Four", llamado Anthology. Mismo que salió a principios de los 90's y que contó con dos temas inéditos, y que a su vez, contaron con el beneplácito de YoKo Ono; se llaman "Real Love" y "Free As A Bird". Están disponibles todos los lugares que actualmente existe para oír y publicar música, y también cuentan con sendos vídeos, que recomiendo vean.
Curiosamente, después de la muerte de Lennon, a causa de Mark David Chapman, Harrison quedó muy traumatizado, profundamente. Había perdido a uno de sus mejores y más viejos amigos, sin poder despedirle y años más tarde, en 1999 para ser precisos sufriría un atentado en su propio domicilio. Esta vez, tuvo mejor final que John pero limitaría sus apariciones hasta su triste y muy lamentada partida en 2002 a causa de un acucioso cáncer de pulmón que lo tenía maltrecho desde hacía mucho tiempo. Siempre fue un hombre lógico, apasionado de la música y sobre todo de la técnica en la guitarra. Lo podemos ver en canciones como "Something" o en "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", y en un sinfín de arreglos que de no ser por él, jamás habrían tenido la grandeza que terminaron teniendo.
A great father, loving, funny and also a strangely faithful husband. He had a couple of marriages but always stood out for being very devoted when it came to family. Total genius, wonderful and with an inner component, a soul like that of few artists. Today I remember you, dear Georgie, and without any hint of grandeur, I dedicate these words to you. Perhaps you have already been reincarnated into something better, or perhaps not. No one will ever know. But that doesn't matter, you have already done too much. You have brought happiness like very few people have done in this world, and you have undoubtedly left a musical legacy that is unfading, unforgettable, unique, as you will continue to be.
Un gran padre, amoroso, divertido y también un esposo extrañamente fiel. Tuvo un par de matrimonios pero siempre se destacó por ser muy devoto en lo que a la familia se refiere. Genio total, maravilloso y con un componente interno, un alma como la de pocos artistas. Hoy te recuerdo, querido Georgie, y sin ínfula alguna de grandeza, te dedico estas palabras.
