Maybe you don't know, or maybe you do, but this man not only revolutionised a style that wasn't exactly born with him, but he did take it to a place on the planet where it would make a definitive change. And like the snowball metaphor, one thing led to another, and it all led to the greatest sound of the greatest rock and roll generation of all time. But in order to explain how a series of events derive from a single exponent, it is first necessary to convey the significance of this subject in the history of music, of the blues and above all of the sound we all enjoy today. Measuring all that Mr. Waters did during his fantastic career is not only a challenging task, but so comprehensive that it risks making this post too dense. However, no one (ever) thought that a boy, born in the Mississippi Delta in 1913, would be directly responsible for a movement that would change the lives of millions of people. And not only that, but with his unmistakable and spectacular style, he would leave the British public speechless, who always welcomed him as he deserved. This is not a minor fact, since in the United States, Muddy Waters, like his peers in blues, jazz and soul, did not enjoy the freedom and sonority they longed for due to racial, segregationist and even economic issues.
In this sense, that this visionary was able to get on a plane and travel thousands of miles to the UK is incredible enough to leave unmentioned. Waters was one of the first exponents of original black music in the UK. At his impressive concerts, there were characters that today we marvel at and recognise as the "best of the best". Y no solo eso, sino que con su estilo inconfundible y espectacular, dejaría boquiabiertos al público británico, que siempre lo acogió como él se merecía. Un dato no menor, ya que en en los Estados Unidos, Muddy Waters, al igual que sus pares dentro del blues, del jazz y del soul, no gozaban de la libertad y de la sonoridad que anhelaban por temas raciales, segregacionistas y hasta económicos.

Waters, fue uno de los primeros exponentes de la música originalmente negra en tierras inglesas. En sus impresionantes conciertos, estaban personajes que hoy nos maravillan y que reconocemos como los "mejores de los mejores". It is no small thing to say that Muddy Waters, almost riskily, took a flight and first arrived in Newport in 1958, and from then on the sound of a peerless creator like him would make a difference in every beat, rhythm and harmony we have heard since. Along with B.B. King, he is also considered the lord and master of the Chicago blues sound, which is diametrically opposed to the Mississippi blues in that it contains more of a sly, upbeat feel than the classic lyrics and anguish of the American South. Little Richards, the Rolling Stones, Cream, Eric Clapton as a solo artist, The Animals, Yardbirds, The Beatles, The Kinks, Black Sabbath; and even Deep Purple, owe so much to Muddy Water, that it is simply inconceivable that to this day, nobody knows how one of the most resounding and superlative cultural, social, musical and artistic revolutions of the entire 20th century came about; precisely carried out by the protagonist of this story I am writing for all of you. Moreover, illustrious figures such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, owe much of the sound that has characterised them to Waters' direct influence.
Chuck Berry, Little Richards and AC DC, also fall under Muddy Waters' lightning and indelible spell on music. It is simply impossible to conceive of the sound of rock music in the 60's without him. It will never be easy to talk about tributes, nor will it escape controversy, but it is the least that such a hero deserves. Music is full of men and women who left an indelible mark on it and that we should all simply know and recognise today. But no culture will ever be responsible for the best genres in the infinite range of styles within music, such as music of black origin. Responsible for pop, soul, rock, blues, jazz, reggae, ska, hip hop, rhythm and blues, and on and on...

A glimpse into the past will always serve to give us a fair measure of how much we have to thank such transcendent figures as Muddy Waters. A guy who was born into the most extreme poverty, with the worst standards of living and the worst cultural, social, economic, human and even physical situation, and none of that stopped him. He moved to Chicago with his family in search of a better life and never forgot where he came from. To the point of becoming world famous and renowned, precisely because he carried Mississippi in his soul and essence, but in the Windy City, and after that in the whole world.
Una vista al pasado, siempre nos servirá para poder dimensionar con justicia lo mucho que debemos agradecer a figuras tan trascendentes como Muddy Waters. Un sujeto que nació en la más extrema pobreza, con los peores estándares de vida y con la peor situación cultural, social, económica, humana y hasta física, y nada de eso lo detuvo. And we see this, without a doubt, in the life, career, work and unforgettable legacy of a legend like Muddy Waters. That thanks to his tours in 1958, 1960, and 1970, throughout Europe, but mainly within the UK, he was directly responsible for the sound that years later would be created by middle class, white, affluent kids; who curiously could be seen as the antithesis of the blues but fortunately it didn't happen this way. So, as you can see now, one fact leads to another fact, and then another fact is born, and so it comes down to us. You may look up Muddy Waters' songs on your favourite device or app, and you may not like them, but you can never deny that those who preceded what you like today, loved him. There are many geniuses but few with the right recognition, Mr. Muddy Waters is not one of them.
