Oh, Kurt Cobain! Every time I talk about this guy, the exact same thing happens to me. I think, what a musical and creative icon we lost as a generation.... A musician who together with Kris Novoselic and a huge Dave Grohl, Chad Channing, Dale Crover and Pat Smith (all members, ex-members or collaborators of Nirvana at some historical point from 1987 to 1994) made possible the apparent dichotomy between alternative rock (which wasn't mainstream at all) and the power of recognition and camera flashes, by being the absolute representatives of a genre, which literally nobody saw coming before: Grunge. "With The Lights Out" is the name of a chorus of the famous "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and it is also the title of the band's legacy album, released in 2004...
¡Oh, Kurt Cobain! Cada vez que hablo sobre este sujeto, me pasa exactamente lo mismo. Pienso, en el ícono musical y creativo que perdimos como generación... Un músico que junto a Kris Novoselic y un enorme Dave Grohl, Chad Channing, Dale Crover y Pat Smith (todos miembros, ex miembros o colaboradores de Nirvana en algún punto histórico desde 1987 hasta 1994) hicieron posible la aparente dicotomía entre el rock alternativo (que no era nada mainstream) y el poder del reconocimiento y los flashes de las cámaras, al ser los absolutos representantes de un género, que literalmente nadie vio venir antes: el Grunge. "With The Lights Out" es el nombre de un estribillo de la famosa "Smells Like Teen Spirit" y también es el título del álbum legado de la banda, lanzado en 2004...
Writing this, almost 20 years after the official release (which, by the way, was not exempt from legal disputes between Courtney Love and the other members of the band) represents a tremendous challenge not to fall into the most acute nostalgia. Well, Nirvana, for me, means the beginning of my personal history with rock and roll but with a marked emphasis on Grunge, which to this day, together with punk rock, represent the cornerstones of my musical tastes. They (Nirvana) made it possible for an entire generation (please don't underestimate this calculation) to not only be truly represented, but heard. The simplicity, the strength and also the anger of the dark side of America, of that country that was far from the dream of prosperity and wealth that Reagan promoted so much.
The kids from broken homes, and from working class backgrounds. Who either did not know one of their two parents, or who lived in homes where the pillar of every childhood was not only flawed but offered no positive hope for the future. This is the socio-cultural context of Grunge, but also of alternative rock; the real one. The one that was played on local and university radio stations, without the support of big record companies or monopolistic conglomerates with a thirst and hunger to generate huge profits. Where freedom and creativity, without fierce competition or rivalries created by the press, could contaminate the environment. All this I tell, in a city forgotten by all, Seattle, where the best exponents of this genre lived together and made history.
Escribir esto, casi 20 años después del lanzamiento oficial (que por cierto, no estuvo exento de disputas legales entre Courtney Love y los demás miembros de la banda) representa un tremendo reto para no caer en la nostalgia más aguda. Pues, Nirvana, para mí significa el comienzo de mi historia personal con el rock and roll pero con énfasis marcado en el Grunge, que hasta el día de hoy, junto al punk rock, representan las piedras angulares de mis gustos musicales. Ellos (Nirvana) hicieron posible para una generación entera (por favor, no subestimen este cálculo) no sólo ser realmente representados, sino escuchados. La sencillez, la fuerza y también la ira del lado oscuro de los Estados Unidos, de ese país que estaba lejos del sueño de prosperidad y riqueza que Reagan, tanto promocionaba.
Los chicos de hogares rotos, y de clase trabajadora. Que o no conocían a uno de sus dos padres, o que vivían en casas donde el pilar de toda niñez, no sólo estaba viciado sino que no brindaba ninguna esperanza positiva para el futuro. Este es el contexto socio cultural del Grunge, pero también del rock alternativo; el verdadero. Ése que sonaba en radio locales y universitarias, sin apoyo de grandes discográficas ni conglomerados monopólicos son sed y hambre de generar ganancias inmensas. Donde la libertad y la creatividad, sin competencia feroz ni rivalidades creadas por la prensa, pudieran contaminar el ambiente. Todo ésto que relato, dentro de una ciudad olvidada por todos, Seattle, donde los mejores exponentes de este género convivieron juntos y hacían historia.
With the "With The Lights Out" Box Set, Nirvana compiles their most iconic songs, just as The Beatles did with "1" (ONE). But not in the "Greatest Hits" format, but with the entire collection of all their creations. Iconic songs like the anthem of the rebellious and angry teenagers (Smells Like Teen Spirit) in their early days, without so much production, combined with a lot of covers of bands like Led Zeppelin, Leadbelly, The Meat Puppets, Kiss and others. Además, cuenta con un DVD con grabaciones reales hechas por los mismos miembros de Nirvana durante sus ensayos. Songs like, "Verse, Chorus, Verse", which is a gem from the boys from Aberdeen, Washington, and still remains one of those hidden treasures that these guys were able to make possible. But there are also covers like "You Know You're Right" in a completely different format than the 2001 release on the greatest hits album. Moreover, the repertoire of songs follows an order that constantly reminds us of the underground spirit of Nirvana. An incredible contrast, because with their second album, "Nevermind" they changed the rules of rock and roll and music forever... However, on this album it is incredibly clear that no matter how many millions of copies were sold worldwide, these guys were and always will prefer to remain alternative.
Now, this box set has an exquisite and incomparable documentary value. Something that is its greatest contribution, because from a purely technical point of view, the quality of most of the pieces that make up the album, do not have a great sound quality. But, honestly, the documentary value and above all the compositional logic through the different stages of Nirvana, makes it absolutely worthwhile. It's a compilation of the depths of this band; intimacies, songs we all know but with other arrangements, first versions, versions that inexplicably didn't make it onto their canon albums, and surreptitious wonders like "Sappy" or "Marigold".
Canciones como, "Verse, Chorus, Verse", que es una joya de los chicos de Aberdeen, Washington, y que aún permanece como uno de esos tesoros escondidos que estos chicos pudieron hacer posible. Pero también hay versiones como "You Know You're Right" en un formato completamente distinto al lanzamiento hecho en 2001, en el disco de grandes éxitos. Además, el repertorio de canciones sigue un orden que constantemente nos recuerda lo underground del espíritu de Nirvana. Un contraste increíble, ya que con su segundo álbum, "Nevermind" cambiaron las reglas del rock and roll y de la música para siempre... No obstante, en este álbum queda increíblemente claro que daba igual los millones de copias vendidas en todo el mundo, estos chicos eran y siempre preferirán permanecer alternativos.
Ahora bien, este box set tiene un valor documental exquisito e incomparable. Algo que es su mayor aporte, ya que desde el punto meramente técnico, la calidad de la mayoría de las piezas que conforman el álbum, no cuentan con una gran calidad en cuanto sonido. Pero, honestamente les digo, el valor documental y sobre todo de lógica compositiva a través de las diferentes etapas de Nirvana, hace que valga absolutamente la pena. Es un compilatorio de las profundidades de esta banda; intimidades, canciones que todos conocemos pero con otros arreglos, primeras versiones, versiones que inexplicablemente no entraron en sus discos canon, y maravillas subrepticias como "Sappy" o "Marigold".
And the fact is that if you look closely at all the material this album contains, you can witness, without much effort of concentration, how anger gives way to wonder and balance; not throwing aside that furious and misunderstood side that only Cobain's voice could exemplify but also giving it beautiful nuances, typical of pop and low peaks during many of its songs. In the previous paragraph, I suggested that two songs never saw the light of day on Nirvana's classic albums, not even on Unplugged, which falls into that classification; such as "Marigold", which is sung by Dave Grohl and where Kurt and Kris reverse musical roles; the former playing bass and the latter playing guitar. I'll leave it here for everyone to enjoy.
Y es que si se analiza detenidamente todo el material que este disco contiene, podemos ser testigos, sin mucho esfuerzo de concentración en como la ira depara en la maravilla y el balance; no tirando a un lado ese lado furioso e incomprendido que sólo la voz de Cobain podía ejemplificar pero dándole también matices hermosos, propias del pop y de los picos bajos durante muchas de sus canciones. En el párrafo anterior, sugería que dos temas jamás vieron la luz del día en los álbumes clásicos de Nirvana, ni siquiera en el Unplugged, que entra dentro de esa clasificación; como "Marigold", que es cantada por Dave Grohl y donde Kurt y Kris invierten los roles musicales; el primero tocado el bajo y el segundo ejerciendo la guitarra. La dejaré aquí para el disfrute de todos.

On April 4, 1994, it ended abruptly with the death of a musical genius, a victim of a fatal gunshot wound of his own making and a victim of the scourge that wiped out an entire generation of alternative artists; and yes, I am talking about heroin: the real killer of a piece of human musical history.
