Hoy me saldré un poco de mi foco de escritura para abordar temas musicales. Siempre he sido un melómano empedernido, tecladista aficionado y ocasional, cantante de karaoke en solitario. No os preocupéis, en esta ocasión no compartiré mis experimentos musicales.
Saben, en las mañanas escucho brevemente la radio mientras llevo al trabajo a mi hija. El programa de radio abierta se llama “El rancherazo de las mañanas”. Sí, exquisitas canciones emotivas de la edad de oro del cine mexicano. Solo alcanzó a escuchar entre tres o cuatro canciones, por lo general de Pedro Infante, Javier Solís, Vicente Fernández, y otro más que oscila entre interpretaciones de Miguel Aceves Mejía y Antonio Aguilar.
Entonces, evocan recuerdos infantiles, no porque yo haya vivido el auge de mentados artistas. Si no porque eran de los preferidos de mis abuelos y padres. Y así, como yo compartí con mis hijos la espléndida, centrada en lo cotidiano, y enérgica música de los años ochenta y noventa, yo y muchos de mi generación, también recibimos el influjo de la época dorada de los años 50 y 60. Además, la buena música no muere. Quizás, la arrinconen un tiempo, pero siempre terminan resurgiendo con fuerza en nuevas voces y músicos que le dan geniales toques personales.
Y aquí, surgen las odiosas comparaciones y preguntas auspiciadas por vanas competencias para subvertir los legados musicales.
Sé de sobra de las preferencias personales. A mí me gusta mucho, el estilo de Javier Solís. Un dato curioso: mis padres me bautizaron con su nombre artístico (en realidad se llamaba Gabriel Siria Levario), por ser el cantante favorito de mi madre en aquella época. Su voz aterciopelada y afinada, como también el gran dominio de las dinámicas vocales, que hace imposible aburrirse al escucharlo en sesiones prolongadas, lo convirtieron en el máximo exponente del bolero ranchero. Una mezcla de ambos estilos, popularizada por Pedro Infante a principio de los años 50.
Sin duda, Pedro Infante, todo un icono cultural y querido en México, transcendió a toda Hispanoamérica. Fue una lástima que muriera joven en un accidente aéreo, en el cenit de su carrera cinematográfica y cantoral, sacudiendo el sentimiento colectivo mexicano. Pero sin su ocaso, quizás, el joven Javier Solís, lo habría tenido más difícil, a pesar de su gran talento. Otro dato curioso no tan personal, ambos compartieron el mismo maestro de canto, José de Jesús Rodríguez; lo que explica ciertas similitudes en el timbre y en el fraseo.
Así que, es de necio debatir de quién de los dos fue mejor. De hecho, haciéndome en necio, busqué una canción interpretada en común, pero no la hallé. ¿Y cómo hallarla? Javier manifestó en una ocasión que Pedro Infante fue su ídolo y fuente de inspiración. Especulando, supongo que evitó los grandes éxitos de Pedro para no ser etiquetado como imitador, aunque lo más seguro fuese el hondo respeto que le tenía. En tal sentido, él buscó labrarse un estilo particular, y vaya que lo logró. Despuntó hasta convertirse en el heredero del gran Pedro. Pero el destino fatal, también lo alcanzó tempranamente, y murió luego de una colecistectomía antes de cumplir los 35 años, cuando era una luminaria incansable del espectáculo. Dicen por allí, que él presentía y comentó, en consecuencia, que moriría joven. Vaya a saber qué tan ciertos son estos chismes de farándula.
Ante un nuevo gran vacío, con varios candidatos al trono vacante y con el auge avasallante de ritmos inspirados en el rock y el pop británico y estadounidense, llegó un joven Vicente Fernández para tomar la batuta del género tradicional y ranchero. El Chente, como fue apodado cariñosamente, sí envejeció con dignidad y exitoso, hasta superar los ochenta años. Impuso un estilo marcado por la potencia y expansión de su voz visceral y dramática, con agudos sostenidos que se convirtieron en su sello distintivo hasta el final de su vida. Cantó temas, tanto de Pedro como de Javier, hilvanado por la letra y música del gran compositor y cantante José Alfredo Jiménez. En alguna ocasión, alguien le preguntó a don Vicente, sobre a quién consideraba el mejor cantante de México, y este, sin titubear, contestó: Javier Solís. Bueno, ahora que él no está, valdría incluirlo obligatoriamente en esta terna.

Today I will step out of my writing focus a bit to address musical topics. I have always been an inveterate music lover, amateur keyboardist and occasional, solo karaoke singer. Don't worry, I won't be sharing my musical experiments this time around.
You know, in the mornings I briefly listen to the radio while I drive my daughter to work. The open radio program is called “El rancherazo de las mañanas.” Yes, exquisite emotional songs from the golden age of Mexican cinema. I only got to hear between three or four songs, usually by Pedro Infante, Javier Solis, Vicente Fernandez, and another one that oscillates between interpretations by Miguel Aceves Mejia and Antonio Aguilar.
So, they evoke childhood memories, not because I lived through the heyday of those artists. But because they were among the favorites of my grandparents and parents. I am well aware of personal preferences. I like Javier Solis' style very much. A curious fact: my parents baptized me with his stage name (actually his name was Gabriel Siria Levario), because he was my mother's favorite singer at that time. In that sense, he sought to carve out his own particular style, and he succeeded. He stood out until he became the heir of the great Pedro. But fate also caught up with him early, and he died after a cholecystectomy before his 35th birthday, when he was a tireless show business luminary. It is said that he foresaw and consequently commented that he would die young. Who knows how true this show business gossip is.
Faced with a great void, with several candidates for the vacant throne and with the overwhelming rise of rhythms inspired by British and American rock and pop, a young Vicente Fernández arrived to take the baton of the traditional and ranchero genre. El Chente, as he was affectionately nicknamed, did age with dignity and success, until he was over eighty years old. He imposed a style marked by the power and expansion of his visceral and dramatic voice, with sustained high notes that became his hallmark until the end of his life. He sang songs by both Pedro and Javier, threaded by the lyrics and music of the great composer and singer José Alfredo Jiménez. On one occasion, someone asked Don Vicente who he considered to be the best singer in Mexico, and he answered without hesitation: Javier Solis. Well, now that he is not here, it would be worth including him in this list.
If you ask me, you already know my answer. If you know these giants of the ranchero genre and derivatives, and you are not afraid of being branded as a fool, what is yours?
