Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing from Cape Town in South Africa!
Now, a few months ago, I think it was @sleemfit who asked me to do a short video describing some of the fundamental things that make me play guitar the way I do. The great electric guitarist @sunsethunter, also said he would be keen to watch me give tips on how I’ve adapted to acoustic steel string guitar. I also think that @clairemobey would benefit from a video that summarises my approach to playing steel string, so here goes!
1. Multitasking? NO! Different levels of Thought!
The main question that drove @sleemfit’s request was that he thinks I am smooth at singing (or playing harmonica) at the same time as playing guitar. Am I multitasking?
I don’t think so… I think my body and brain are working at different levels of consciousness:
•Unconscious – Rhythm: My body is trained to keep the rhythm at an unconscious level. My foot taps without me telling it to, and the rest of my performance follows that foot. I sometimes even use a stomp box to emphasise the foot-tapping rhythm.
•Subconscious – Chord Structure: If I am strumming out a basic chord pattern on guitar I should be able to do this with my eyes closed, and following the rhythm of my foot tapping, while keeping my conscious brain focusing on a more complex task…
•Conscious – Melody: This is where my brain is actually working… this will be the singing, or a more complex solo on guitar that requires attention, or some harmonica on a rack. To do more than one of these things at a time will probably make the music sound over complicated with the elements clashing rather than supporting each other.
•The Zone / Mastery - Emotion: Once you know a song well you can start to focus on feeling the emotion you are trying to convey, so that hopefully the audience can feel that emotion as well.
So yes, the first lesson is the footstomp time-keeping! Make this an unconscious habit and you’ll be able to switch from various playing styles without losing the rhythm, which makes you sound like the guitar is second nature to you…
The right hand
•As I’ve demonstrated, I have songs that go from strumming to picking and other styles. As such, I never use a guitar pick. Strumming down on steel string guitar is easy, because your fingernails protect the flesh of your finger. But what about up-strums? The bottom steel string is thin and sharp enough to cut cheese and hurt you! What I do is put my thumb and first finger together almost as if I am holding a guitar pick – this only exposes my first fingernail itself to the up-strum, while the flesh is hidden by the thumb nail! While the down-strum should brush all the strings in the chord, it’s okay if the up-strum just hits the bottom treble strings most of the time!
•It’s important to have strumming patterns with up-strums to sound smooth and professional, unless you’re playing “Zombie” by the Cranberries! Haha! Common patterns will depend on the timing of your song. It’s also cool to use your thumb on the bass string of the chord to start. Try:
o“Thumb-up-down-up” to the beat of 1&2&…
o“Thumb… down-up down-up” to the beat of 1 2&3& (A waltz song)
oOr even “Down… down down-up up down-up down-up down-up” to the beat of “I want to play like Jimi Hendrix and-a…” (You’d better watch the video!) which is actually the pattern that works for “Wonderwall” by Oasis!
•Fingerpicking? It’s best to dedicate a finger each to the bottom three treble strings and your thumb to the appropriate bass string. Patterns you can try include:
o“Thumb-1-(2&3)-1” to the beat of 1,2,3,4
o“Thumb-1-2-3-2-1” to the beat of 1,2,3,4,5,6 (6/8 arpeggio style). A famous example is “Everybody Hurts” by REM
oTo make this fit into most other songs you can go “Thumb-1-2-3-2-1-Thumb-1” to have 8 notes per pattern…
•The last thing that is very fundamental to how my right-hand plays is “Palm Muting”. Usually during a verse, I “karate-chop” the white bridge of my guitar so that the guitar makes a more muted sound. I then open up on the chorus to sound livelier and more jangly to match the fact that I’m probably singing louder!
The left hand
•ARRIVE on time! This means that your fingers must be in the correct place on the first beat.
oHere’s me playing “Zombie” where I assume I am slow at changing chords and sacrifice the 8th beat… 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,chunk,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,chunk. This is the fundamental guitar sound of changing chords… the people listening won’t even notice.
oNow hear how horrible it sounds if I ARRIVE late… 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,chunk,2,3,4,5,6,7,8… Ew! But do you know what’s even worse?
oPausing until your fingers are correct and losing the rhythm that should be SO fundamental. How many beginners sound like this? 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (Pause) 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8… NO!
•The left hand’s thumb moves depending on the chord! My dad, who was a world class rock-climber at the time, was once told that his hands weren’t strong enough for barre chords and that they would get stronger with time. That wasn’t the problem at all… it was thumb position. Your thumb is meant to back up where your fingers need to be strong for that particular chord.
oFor a barre chord, this is in the middle of the neck behind the barre-finger
oFor D-major which is fingered down low, your thumb needs to come up high... You can even use the thumb to play a lovely D/F#...
oThis will mean that even your wrist and elbow move around, so you’d better be loose and relaxed!
Well, that’s basically it!
Just remember to arrange your song performance, such that when you are singing, your guitar-playing is mainly chord structure and simple and sub-conscious. Any more complicated guitar work (or harmonica) can be done separately to the singing, as two complex things would be difficult to do, but will probably also sound overcomplicated to the listener anyway!
And that’s about it – If you master this and put time into it, you should be pretty good! Just remember you reach a point where it all becomes fun rather than “practise” – so you just need to get to that point as painlessly as possible!

Ahora, hace unos meses, creo que fue @sleemfit quien me pidió que hiciera un video corto que describiera algunas de las cosas fundamentales que me hacen tocar la guitarra como lo hago. El gran guitarrista eléctrico @sunsethunter también dijo que le encantaría verme dar consejos sobre cómo me he adaptado a la guitarra acústica con cuerdas de acero. También creo que a @clairemobey le vendría bien un vídeo que resuma mi enfoque para tocar cuerdas de acero, ¡así que ahí va!
1. ¿Multitarea? ¡NO! ¡Diferentes niveles de pensamiento!
La pregunta principal que impulsó la solicitud de @sleemfit fue si él cree que soy bueno cantando (o tocando la armónica) al mismo tiempo que toco la guitarra. ¿Soy multitarea?
No lo creo… Creo que mi cuerpo y mi cerebro están trabajando en diferentes niveles de conciencia:
• Inconsciente – Ritmo: Mi cuerpo está entrenado para mantener el ritmo a un nivel inconsciente. Mi pie golpea sin que yo se lo diga, y el resto de mi actuación sigue ese pie. A veces incluso uso un pedal para enfatizar el ritmo del golpe del pie.
• Subconsciente – Estructura de acordes: si estoy tocando un patrón de acordes básico en la guitarra, debería poder hacerlo con los ojos cerrados y siguiendo el ritmo de mis pies, mientras mantengo mi cerebro consciente enfocado en una tarea más compleja…
• Consciente – Melodía: Aquí es donde mi cerebro realmente está trabajando… este será el canto, o un solo de guitarra más complejo que requiere atención, o una armónica en un estante. Hacer más de una de estas cosas a la vez probablemente hará que la música suene demasiado complicada y los elementos choquen en lugar de apoyarse entre sí.
• La Zona / Maestría - Emoción: Una vez que conoces bien una canción, puedes empezar a concentrarte en sentir la emoción que estás tratando de transmitir, de modo que, con suerte, el público también pueda sentir esa emoción.
Así que sí, ¡la primera lección es mantener el tiempo con los pies! Haz de esto un hábito inconsciente y podrás cambiar entre varios estilos de interpretación sin perder el ritmo, lo que te hará sonar como si la guitarra fuera una segunda naturaleza para ti...
La mano derecha
• Como he demostrado, tengo canciones que van desde el rasgueo hasta el punteo y otros estilos. Por eso nunca uso una púa de guitarra. Tocar una guitarra con cuerdas de acero es fácil porque las uñas protegen la carne del dedo. Pero ¿qué pasa con los rasgueos ascendentes? ¡La cuerda de acero inferior es lo suficientemente delgada y afilada como para cortar queso y lastimarte! Lo que hago es juntar el pulgar y el índice casi como si estuviera sosteniendo una púa de guitarra: ¡esto solo expone mi primera uña al rasgueo hacia arriba, mientras que la carne queda oculta detrás de la uña del pulgar! Si bien el rasgueo hacia abajo debe rozar todas las cuerdas del acorde, ¡está bien si el rasgueo hacia arriba solo toca las cuerdas agudas inferiores la mayor parte del tiempo!
• Es importante tener patrones de rasgueo con rasgueos ascendentes para que suene suave y profesional, ¡a menos que estés tocando “Zombie” de los Cranberries! ¡Ja ja! Los patrones comunes dependerán del tiempo de tu canción. También es genial usar el pulgar en la cuerda del bajo del acorde para comenzar. Intentar:
o “Pulgar arriba-abajo-arriba” al ritmo de 1&2&…
o “Thumb… down-up down-up” al ritmo de 1 2&3& (Una canción de vals)
o O incluso “Down… down down-up up down-up down-up down-up” al ritmo de “Quiero tocar como Jimi Hendrix y-a…” (¡Será mejor que veas el vídeo!), que es ¡De hecho, el patrón que funciona para “Wonderwall” de Oasis!
•¿Elegir con el dedo? Lo mejor es dedicar un dedo a cada una de las tres cuerdas agudas inferiores y el pulgar a la cuerda grave correspondiente. Los patrones que puedes probar incluyen:
o “Pulgar-1-(2&3)-1” al ritmo de 1,2,3,4
o “Thumb-1-2-3-2-1” al ritmo de 1,2,3,4,5,6 (estilo arpegio 6/8). Un ejemplo famoso es "Everybody Hurts" de REM.
o Para que esto encaje en la mayoría de las otras canciones, puedes ir a “Pulgar-1-2-3-2-1-Pulgar-1” para tener 8 notas por patrón…
• Lo último que es fundamental para la forma en que juega mi mano derecha es “Palm Muting”. Por lo general, durante una estrofa, hago un “corte de karate” en el puente blanco de mi guitarra para que la guitarra emita un sonido más apagado. Luego me abro en el coro para sonar más animado y tintineante para que coincida con el hecho de que probablemente estoy cantando más fuerte.
La mano izquierda
•¡Llegar a tiempo! Esto significa que tus dedos deben estar en el lugar correcto en el primer tiempo.
o Aquí estoy yo tocando “Zombie” donde asumo que soy lento cambiando los acordes y sacrifico el octavo tiempo… 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,chunk,1,2,3,4,5,6, 7, trozo. Este es el sonido fundamental de la guitarra con acordes cambiantes... la gente que escucha ni siquiera lo notará.
o Ahora escucha que horrible suena si LLEGO tarde… 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,chunk,2,3,4,5,6,7,8… ¡Ew! ¿Pero sabes qué es aún peor?
o Hacer una pausa hasta que tus dedos estén correctos y perder el ritmo que debería ser TAN fundamental. ¿Cuántos principiantes suenan así? 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (Pausa) 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8… ¡NO!
• ¡El pulgar de la mano izquierda se mueve dependiendo del acorde! A mi padre, que en aquella época era un escalador de talla mundial, le dijeron una vez que sus manos no eran lo suficientemente fuertes para los acordes de barra y que se volverían más fuertes con el tiempo. Ese no era el problema en absoluto... era la posición del pulgar. Su pulgar está destinado a retroceder donde sus dedos necesitan ser fuertes para ese acorde en particular.
o Para un acorde de barra, este está en el medio del siguiente detrás del dedo de barra.
o Para Re mayor que se toca hacia abajo, el pulgar debe estar hacia arriba... Incluso puedes usar el pulgar para tocar un encantador D/F#...
o Esto significará que incluso tu muñeca y codo se moverán, ¡así que será mejor que estés suelto y relajado!
Bueno, ¡eso es básicamente todo!
Sólo recuerda organizar la interpretación de tu canción, de modo que cuando cantes, tu forma de tocar la guitarra sea principalmente estructura de acordes y simple y subconsciente. Cualquier trabajo de guitarra (o armónica) más complicado se puede hacer por separado del canto, ya que dos cosas complejas serían difíciles de hacer, ¡pero probablemente también sonarán demasiado complicadas para el oyente de todos modos!
Y eso es todo: si dominas esto y le dedicas tiempo, ¡deberías ser bastante bueno! Sólo recuerda que llegas a un punto en el que todo se vuelve divertido en lugar de “práctica”, ¡así que solo necesitas llegar a ese punto de la forma más sencilla posible!
