Peter Gabriel turns 75 today, having been born on February 13, 1950. He is undeniably one of the most influential British musicians since the late 1970s, who lived his best days in the late 1980s, the 1990s, and the beginning of the 21st century. Apart from being an instrumentalist (piano, clarinet, etc.), he is a great composer and a singer with an unmistakable style, who began as such in the legendary group “Genesis”, of which he was a founder; he separated from it to become an individual musician, managing to become a very relevant figure. Among his contributions to the contemporary musical world, he has been the initiator and promoter of the ethnic-musical movement known as World Music, which has promoted the incorporation and fusion of rhythms and musical instruments from different ethnic and geographical origins, such as those from Africa, from Eastern countries such as Egypt and, in general, from the broad field of folk or popular music. He has been a composer of music for film, such as the famous album Passion, the soundtrack of the film The Last Temptation of Christ, the controversial film by Martin Scorsese, from 1989. He is also known for his commitment to social causes such as protests against racial discrimination – evident in the case of South Africa – and other campaigns in favor of the defense of human rights with Amnesty International.
When I was very young I had enjoyed several of his songs on “Genesis”, and then, towards the middle of the 80s, I rediscovered what he was doing as a soloist. Since then I followed him, especially on his albums from the 90s and early 2000s. I confess that I have lost track of him a bit since then.
There are many pieces of music —more than songs— that seem to me to be representative of the rich and prodigious talent of Peter Gabriel, especially those on his album So and Us, which I listened to while enjoying a good wine with my girlfriend or alone. Of them I have chosen only three, so as not to abuse your attention, of which I provide a video and the lyrics.
Let's start with “Biko”, a song from 1980, which denounces the murder of the South African anti-apartheid leader, Steve Biko. There are many live versions of this song, but I decided to choose one from a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa (although it is not a good recording), with an added tribute to Nelson Mandela.

Another of his favorite songs, to which I have felt very emotionally attached, is “Blood of Eden”, which, in addition to a charming musicalization and singing, offers us lyrics of heartfelt and beautiful composition, where the myth of Adam and Eve and the fall, that is, that of man and woman, is recreated. In this version he sings with Sinéad O’Connor.

And finally, a song, which is a complete musical work, inspired, apparently, by a love and religious song of African origin: “In your eyes”. The Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour takes part, and this particular version, the most recent one I have found, is a complete musical, dance and ethnic spectacle, which is worth enjoying.

Recordando a Peter Gabriel en sus 75 años
Peter Gabriel arriba hoy a sus 75 años de edad, pues nació el 13 de febrero de 1950. Es innegablemente uno de los músicos británicos más influyentes desde finales de la década del 70, que vivió su mejor época en los últimos años de los 80, la década de los 90 y comienzos del siglo XXI. Aparte de ser instrumentista (piano, clarinete, etc.), es un gran compositor y un cantante de inconfundible estilo, que se inició como tal en el legendario grupo “Génesis”, del que fuera fundador; se separó de él para convertirse en músico individual, logrando convertirse en una figura muy relevante. Tiene entre sus aportes para el mundo musical contemporáneo, ser el iniciador y promotor de ese movimiento étnico-musical que se conoce con el nombre de Música del mundo (“World Music”), que ha promovido la incorporación y fusión de ritmos e instrumentos musicales de diferentes procedencias étnicas y geográficas, como las venidas de África, de países orientales como Egipto y, en general, del amplio campo de la música folklórica o popular. Ha sido compositor de música para cine, como el famoso álbum Passion, banda sonora del filme La última tentación de Cristo, la polémica realización de Martin Scorsese, de 1989. También se sabe de su compromiso con causas sociales como la protesta contra la discriminación racial –evidente en el caso de Sudáfrica– y otras campañas en favor de la defensa de los DDHH con Amnistía Internacional.
Siendo muy joven me había deleitado con varias de sus canciones en “Genésis”, y luego, hacia mediados de la década del 80, me reencontré con los que estaba haciendo como solista. Desde entonces lo seguí, sobre todo en sus discos de los años 90 y primeros del 2000. Confieso que luego le he perdido un poco la pista.
Son muchas las piezas musicales –más que canciones– que me parecen representativas del rico y portentoso talento de Peter Gabriel, especialmente las de su disco So y Us, que escuchaba saboreando un buen vino con mi novia o a solas. De ellos he escogido sólo tres, para no abusar de su atención, de las que facilito un video y la letra.
Comencemos por “Biko”, canción de 1980, que denuncia el asesinato del líder surafricano antiapartheid, Steve Biko. Hay muchas versiones en vivo de la interpretación de esta canción, pero decidí escoger una de un concierto que realiza en Johannesburg (Suráfrica), con agregado homenaje a Nelson Mandela.Septiembre '77

Otra de sus canciones preferidas, a la que me he sentido sentimentalmente muy vinculado, es “Sangre del Edén”, que, además de una encantadora musicalización y canto, nos ofrece una letra de sentida y hermosa composición, donde se recrea el mito de Adán y Eva y la caída, es decir, el del hombre y la mujer. En esta versión canta con Sinéad O’Connor.

Interviene el cantante senegalés Youssou N'Dour, y esta versión particular, la más reciente que he conseguido, es todo un espectáculo musical, dancístico y étnico, que merece la pena disfrutar.
