Four young boys from Liverpool set the music world alight in the 60s with their music. The Beatles, a band that revolutionized music, also influenced hairstyles with their mop-top haircuts. Long hair for men was daring, but many hip young men eventually had a Beatles haircut!
Their stage wear evolved from formal suits and ties and 'Beatles' boots to the psychedelic/hippie look, mustaches, and long shaggy hairstyles!
It was an exciting time growing up in the 60s. I was only ten when they had their first hit in Britain and first song released in America - 'Please Please Me'.
I started listening to pop music with two older kids from the UK. They lived close by and used to visit with their parents. I can't remember their names, yet they made a big impression on me! They were cool and 'groovy, baby', and taught me how to twist!
Pretend you're drying your back with a towel, and stomping out a cigarette with your feet.
It worked, I could twist, and we twisted to the songs of The Beatles!
I grew up with their music, and the many other rock bands popping up in the UK and in the States.
Rolling Stone fans may shake their heads in disgust, but I never took to their music; The Beatles always came first. My other favourite bands were The Byrds, The Animals, The Beach Boys, The Hollies, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Simon & Garfunkel...many more, it's impossible to list them all here!
Their manager, Brian Epstein, encouraged them to write songs that would appeal to American audiences. The first such song they wrote was 'I Want to Hold Your Hand.'
The band appeared in a couple of iconic movies such as A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, and of course, the 1968 animated fantasy musical movie, 'The Yellow Submarine'.
If you're a Beatles fan, you'll enjoy this back story of the making of The Yellow Submarine
The Beatles disbanded in 1970 and followed solo careers - their last song together has a telling title - 'Let It Be'!
What happened after the band broke up?
I always wonder what happens when bands disband and to big stars when their careers come to an end. Some just carry on performing, like the last two remaining Beatles.
I enjoyed most of their songs as solo performers, but it was never the same! I had to do a little digging to check if my memory was still intact.
John Lennon had married Yoko Ono the year before the band broke up - some blamed her for the breakup. I liked his first solo song, 'Give Peace a Chance'. His solo songs were based on love, peace, and activism, but no one could have predicted what was to follow!
John Lennon was tragically shot and killed outside his apartment in New York in 1980. I remember well the shock we felt here on the other side of the world!
George Harrison adopted the Hindu faith and his music was mostly based on Indian philosophy. His song 'My Sweet Lord' topped the charts in the UK and became the biggest-selling UK single of 1971.
George Harrison sadly died of lung cancer in 2001.
Sir Ringo Starr is still a much-loved drummer, and he performs on stage with his All Starr Band. 'It Don't Come Easy' is his most famous solo hit song, and was co-written and produced by his Beatles bandmate George Harrison, who was never credited for it. Perhaps that's what George wanted with his new philosophy.
Sir Paul McCartney, is said to be one of the most successful musicians in history! He explored many genres of music, has collaborated with many other artists, and still performs. 'Silly Love Songs' is one of his most well-known hit songs.
All four members of The Beatles received their MBEs, but only Ringo and Paul were knighted. George refused and John returned his in protest. You can read more about their reasons here.
