There are songs that come from a place so deep, they almost write themselves. "You Should Know" is one of those songs. I wrote it because I’ve experienced loss in a way that has shaped my entire life. My wife was killed by a drunk driver in 2013, and our four children have struggled with epilepsy and severe mental illnesses—schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, paranoia. In the end, I’ve lost contact with two of them. The weight of that loss is something I carry every day, and honestly, there are moments when the sadness is unbearable.

Music has always been my way through. When I pick up my guitar in the right mood, when I let myself sink into the music, I enter a flow state—a space where I am fully present. In those moments, I’m not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. I am simply here, feeling every note, every vibration. If I could stay in that state forever, I would.

"You Should Know" was performed completely unplugged, just me and my guitar, the way it was written. There’s something raw and honest about performing that way—nothing between me and the music, nothing between the song and the listener. It’s a song about loss, about longing, and about the things left unsaid. I didn’t write it to find closure; I wrote it because sometimes, putting these feelings into music is the only way I know how to deal with them.

I’m sharing this performance today because I know I’m not the only one who struggles with grief and distance. Maybe you’ll hear something in this song that resonates with you. Maybe it’ll help you feel a little less alone. That’s all I can hope for.

Hay canciones que nacen de un lugar tan profundo que casi se escriben solas. "You Should Know" es una de ellas. La escribí porque he experimentado una pérdida que ha marcado mi vida. Mi esposa murió atropellada por un conductor ebrio en 2013, y nuestros cuatro hijos han luchado contra la epilepsia y enfermedades mentales graves: esquizofrenia, trastorno bipolar y paranoia. Al final, perdí el contacto con dos de ellos. El peso de esa pérdida es algo que llevo a diario, y sinceramente, hay momentos en los que la tristeza es insoportable.

La música siempre ha sido mi camino. Cuando tomo la guitarra con el ánimo adecuado, cuando me sumerjo en la música, entro en un estado de fluidez, un espacio donde estoy completamente presente. En esos momentos, no me quedo en el pasado ni me preocupo por el futuro. Simplemente estoy aquí, sintiendo cada nota, cada vibración. Si pudiera permanecer en ese estado para siempre, lo haría.

"You Should Know" fue interpretada completamente desenchufada, solo yo y mi guitarra, tal como fue escrita. Hay algo crudo y honesto en interpretarla de esa manera: nada entre la música y yo, nada entre la canción y el oyente. Es una canción sobre la pérdida, sobre la añoranza y sobre las cosas que quedaron sin decir. No la escribí para encontrarle un cierre a un tema; la escribí porque, a veces, plasmar estos sentimientos en música es la única manera que conozco de lidiar con ellos.
