For some reason, it's been a while since I last talked about my favorite band, Evanescence. That obviously needs to change, so today I'm going to talk about their self-titled album from 2011, one that I'm lucky enough to have in physical form.

Evanescence is known for a certain song called Bring Me to Life, which has a very specific style. It's a gothic alternative rock with rap infusions that was totally different for its time. Perhaps that's why fans assumed that would always be their style, but it turns out that's not exactly the case. The first album that had that style was Fallen; then came The Open Door, which is the most gothic of all. But years later, this album came out, and it sounded quite different. Although it keeps the elements of that gothic rock, it also incorporates aspects of nu metal, hard rock, and more experimental sounds.
The change was perhaps unexpected, but the truth is that it's much closer to the band's initial style, that of the EPs. That is, before the record label demanded a more commercial style.
Evanescence es reconocida por cierta canción, llamada Bring Me to Life que tiene un estilo específico. Es un rock alternativo gótico con mezclas de rap que era totalmente diferente para la época. Por ello quizás los fans se hicieron la idea de que ese sería su estilo siempre, pero resulta que eso no es exactamente así. El primer álbum que tenía ese estilo fue Fallen; luego llegó The Open Door que es el más gótico de todos. Pero años después llegó éste álbum que sonaba bastante diferente. Aunque mantiene elementos de ese rock gótico, incorpora también aspectos del nu metal, hard rock y sonidos más experimentales.
El cambio fue quizás inesperado, pero lo cierto es que se apega mucho más al estilo inicial de la banda, el de los EP. Es decir, antes de que la disquera les exigiera que tuvieran un estilo más hacia lo comercial.

Few people know it, but Evanescence's original sound was much more experimental than what was released when they got to fame. So this album is actually the first that is most faithful to that style. Their sound has clear influences from Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, MGMT, Portishead, but mainly from Björk, at least in my opinion. They are mixes of sounds that at first listen (or without the rest of the music) may seem like they don't sound right, like they don't fit, but as arrangements to enhance the rest of the music, they are simply incredible.
Pocos lo saben, pero el sonido original de Evanescence era mucho más experimental de lo que fue publicado cuando alcanzaron la fama. Así que este álbum es, en realidad, el primero que es más fiel a ese estilo. Su sonido tiene claras influencias de Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, MGMT, Portishead pero principalmente de Björk, al menos en mi opinión. Son mezclas de sonidos que a primera escucha (o sin el resto de la música) pueden parecer que no quedan bien, pero como arreglos para realzar el resto de la música quedan simplemente increíbles.

The album starts with What You Want, Made of Stone and The Change, songs full of energy and with an overall sound much heavier than usual for the band. They continue with My Heart is Broken which is one of the most dramatic and sadly beautiful songs. It's probably one of my favorites because of the message, which, although it sounds poetic and can easily be confused with heartbreak, is actually about victims of human trafficking and how that trauma affects them deeply.
Following this are The Other Side and Erase This, returning to the initial energy. The Other Side is probably the heaviest song, also one of my favorites for that reason. Plus, it has a catchy chorus. But we quickly recover the drama and sadness with Lost in Paradise, which is incredibly beautiful. It conveys magic and nostalgia, which, along with Amy Lee's hypnotic voice, makes it one of the band's best songs.
The energy returns with Sick, End of the Dream, and Oceans, maintaining the same style as before before moving on to Never Go Back, my favorite song on the album, also the most energetic, dramatic, and impactful of all. The lyrics of this one are more painful, as they deal with the loss of everything after a natural disaster, inspired by the reality of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that same year. They managed to convey the terrible tragedy in such a beautiful way that it makes you remember the song forever.
Finally, to close out the drama, the best way was with a calmer song, in this case Swimming Home. It's the most similar to Björk's style: a piano with a soft voice, mixed with experimental sounds that make it sound like a lullaby under the water. It's a beautiful ending with hopeful lyrics.
El álbum comienza con What You Want, Made of Stone y The Change, canciones cargadas de energía y con un sonido en general mucho más pesado de lo usual para la banda. Continúan con My Heart is Broken que es una de las canciones más dramáticas y tristemente hermosas. Es probablemente una de mis favoritas por el mensaje que aunque suena poético y fácilmente puede confundirse con desamor, en realidad, está hablando de víctimas de trata de blancas, y cómo ese trauma alas afecta profundamente.
Seguidamente están The Other Side y Erase This, volviendo a la energía inicial. The Other Side es probablemente la canción más pesada, también de mis favoritas por esa razón. Además de que tiene un coro pegajoso. Pero rápidamente recuperamos el drama y la tristeza con Lost in Paradise, que es increíblemente hermosa. Transmite magia y nostalgia, que junto a la voz hipnótica de Amy Lee la hace una de las mejores canciones que tiene la banda.
La energía vuelve con Sick, End of the Dream y Oceans, manteniendo el mismo estilo anterior para después ir con Never Go Back, mi canción favorita del álbum, también la más enérgica, dramática e impactante de todas. La letra de esta es más dolorosa, pues trata de la pérdida de todo luego de un desastre natural, inspirándose en la realidad del terremoto y tsunami en Japón de ese mismo año. Lograron transmitir lo terrible de la tragedia de una forma tan hermosa que hace que recuerdes esa canción siempre.
Finalmente, cerrando lo dramático la mejor forma era con una canción más tranquila, en este caso Swimming Home. Es la más parecida al estilo de Björk, un piano con una voz suave, mezclados con sonidos experimentales que la hace sonar como una canción de cuna marina. Es un cierre precioso con una letra esperanzadora.

Aesthetically, dark colors predominate, primarily purple and black. The CD design is minimalist, quite simple but works well. Although I must admit that after the design of the previous album, with so much detail, I would have expected something similar, but it wasn't the case. I also wish the font for the lyrics weren't so small that it makes them almost impossible to read.
The music videos are striking, complementing the magical aura of the songs and, of course, starring Amy Lee.
En cuanto a la estética, predominan los colores oscuros, principalmente el púrpura y negro. El diseño del CD es minimalista, bastante simple pero funciona bien. Aunque debo admitir que después del diseño del álbum anterior a éste, con tantos detalles, esperaría algo similar pero no fue así. Además preferiría que para las letras la fuente no estuviera en un tamaño tan pequeño que las hace casi imposibles de leer.
Los vídeos musicales son llamativos, complementando esa aura mágica de la la canciones y por supuesto, con Amy Lee como protagonista.
Overall, it's a very good album worth listening to if you like more alternative and experimental sounds, as well as emotionally charged lyrics with an almost poetic drama that will move you deeply.
