¡Sick Geek! Este vato es un crack con los beats, ¡y no solo eso! También tiene un título en ingeniería en tecnologías de la información. Nacido en Colorado pero criado en México, Sick Geek se ha destacado por crear sonidos ambientales y experimentos sonoros que lo han llevado a tener un sonido único, único si pero solitario nunca por que ha trabajado con algunos de los escritores más importantes de la escena rapper mexicana como Logan Hate, Guzman Uve y Zaheed Santana de Space Problems entre otros además de haber lanzado algunos mixtapes y beat tapes entre otros proyecto y tengo el honor de tenerlo en mi guarida para conocer más acerca de él.
Saludos Sick, espero que estes muy bien, empecemos, un beatmaker debe prestar especial atención a los elementos rítmicos y melódicos de la música, ya que son los que mantienen la atención del oyente, pero ¿Cómo sientes que la música instrumental se diferencía de la música con letras, y cómo te afecta a ti como beatmaker?
Sick Geek: Antes de dar iniciada gracias por la invitación, me llamo Hugo y mi sobrenombre es Sick Geek soy beatmaker del colectivo No Hype y si quieres platicar de Ultraman, Godzilla, Kamen rider y sonidos raros creo te encontraste con la persona indicada. Pienso que cada una puede tener interpretaciones distintas, una instrumental puede ser tomada como “este track lo pongo porque me hace sentir feliz, triste, eufórico” aquí depende mucho de qué elementos uses para transmitir dicha emoción , puedes contar una historia mediante sonidos al igual que un track con letra cuentas una historia pero la narrativa te lleva a saber de qué trata , en una instrumental puedes tener mil sentimientos en cada minuto y más si se trata de una instrumental progresiva y te va envolviendo con todos sus sonidos.
Y cuando se trata de elementos que inspiran tu obra, como lo que mencionas en tu introducción ¿Cuál es tu relación con tu colección de juguetes sofubi, cómo influyen esos objetos en tu proceso creativo?
Sick Geek: ¿Has visto los estudios de algunos productores y/o beatmakers? algunos tienen plantas, algunos prenden inciensos , otros encienden sus humidificadores con esencias de lavanda para concentrarse y hacer música, bueno, en mi caso me gusta tener mis figuras cerca de mi quiero creer que es parte de un pequeño público, obviamente inanimado pero cuando estoy haciendo música me gusta tener un ultraman, un godzilla etc que ayude a concentrarme y crear algo “relacionado a”, tal es el ejemplo de uno de los beats de mi pasado beat tape, “Urutora Sick Geek” se creó como parte del inicio fuerte en el beat tape , cuando cree esa instrumental tenía una figura de Ultraman (Urutoraman) cerca de mi, por cierto un S/O a toda mi gente de Sofubi gang MX.
Es interesante ese planteamiento de tener una audiencia inanimada en el que puedes crear una narrativa ficticia para entender mejor las emociones que proyecta tu música ¿Crees que esto mismo influye al momento de transmitir emociones sin la ayuda de palabras?
Sick Geek: Hay un dato personal poco relevante pero creo es un buen momento para darlo a conocer y es que yo percibo la música con colores a esto se le llama “cromestesia” eso me ha ayudado bastante a saber que quiero transmitir , normalmente relaciono colores azules, morados y grises cuando estoy haciendo música con un tono sentimental, rojos, amarillos y naranjas cuando quiero algo que suene cálido y con amor y creo este “don” por así llamarlo es de gran ayuda ya que he tenido retroalimentación de gente que me escucha y me hacen comentarios del tipo “este track suena muy triste pero agradable o esta instrumental me transmitió mucha alegría así que lo reproduje muchas veces”
Dentro de esos matices de colores y emociones que te provocan tus obras, que tanto varía dependiendo de tu estado de ánimo antes de iniciar a producir ¿Considerarías tu música como el medio para conectarse contigo mismo y con los demás o es más bien el catalizador?
Sick Geek: La música se hizo para disfrutar para sentir “ese track me representa”, “esa instrumental me hace sentir tranquilo” , cada persona refleja algún sentimiento o alguna razón por la cual quiera reproducir tantas veces un track, para mi si yo creo una instrumental con un mood cálido y al escucharla otra persona me hace comentarios tales como “sentí que estaba en un viaje de tranquilidad y paz” para mi eso ya son muchos puntos a mi favor ya que logré el cometido , “transmitir lo que yo sentía en ese momento”
No nos cabe duda que la música puede ser un medio para explorar y expresar la identidad y la cultura personal, ¿a que grado lleva esto Sick Geek?
Sick Geek: Conozco beatmakers que utilizan sonidos de música que hacen en su región, eso se me hace algo fantástico , he descubierto nacionalidades de personas con el solo hecho de escuchar su música, en un trabajo musical que estuve trabajando me pidieron utilizar unas flautas en específico porque eran de su región y de la música que hacen ahí, se me hace un bonito gesto ya que sigues representando tus raíces y quieres mostrar a la gente lo que se hace en el lugar donde radicas.
Una vez teniendo esa identidad cultural y sobre todo personal, cuál es el siguiente paso, la inspiración es fundamental pero, ¿qué tipo de historias tratas de contar a través de tus instrumentales?
Sick Geek: Siempre trato de transmitir lo que siento en el instante, nunca me ha gustado hacer beats por encargo, me gusta imaginar que un track que hice con un sentimiento en específico ya sea coraje, tristeza etc puede ser usado como soundtrack de la vida de alguien, tengo dos beat tapes en los que cuento historias distintas “Fruit tree” quería transmitir y contar una historia de cariño con las personas cercanas a mi vida , Ryoko fue creado con el fin de sentirte que estás en un viaje hacia algún destino y sentir esa frescura de respirar y llenar al full tus pulmones, salir y sentirte libre.
La tecnología ha tenido un gran impacto en la forma en que se crea y se consume música en la actualidad. ¿Qué opinas sobre el papel el la industria musical y cómo la utilizas en tu proceso creativo?
Sick Geek: La tecnología ha ayudado bastante en todo este proceso, desde siempre creo yo pero ahora es fácil descargar algún vst y simular el sonido de algún instrumento aún así sin necesidad de que sepas tocarlo realmente, el oído y la práctica es lo que ayuda a que puedas simular el sonido de un violín y hacerlo sonar tal si fueras Paganini o algún músico virtuoso , no al mismo nivel pero lograras resultados fascinantes, personalmente la tecnología en todo su esplendor te acerca más a que si no cuentas con algún tocadiscos para samplear directo de un vinil puedes utilizar algún servicio como “tracklib” encontrar ese track pero ahora de forma digital y crear tu melodía.
Fuera del Hip Hop ¿Cuál es tu relación con otros géneros de música?
Sick Geek: Amo la música, a mi parecer es una carta de pantone , hay de todas las tonalidades y tienes mucho de donde elegir todo esto ha influido en la forma de hacer mi música no me gusta quedarme enfrascado en algo y siempre estoy viendo la forma de crear algo, no tanto como crear un género/subgénero de música pero si en tomar referencias de lo que me gusta escuchar para poder procesarlo en mi mente y encontrar la forma en la que suene agradable.
Eso se siente déjame decirte, la pasión con la que trabajas es un hecho innegable, pero una cosa es el crear y otra la distribución de tu obra ¿Cómo te sentiste cuando comenzaste a compartir tu música en línea y que ha cambiado desde entonces?
Sick Geek: Las primeras veces que comencé a compartir música fue por medio de soundcloud pero siento que no era algo tan planeado o minucioso como ahora, antes subía música solo por subirla y que mi grupo de amigos supiera que hacía música y mi forma de trabajar era solo escuchar un loop de algo que me gustara , montar drums y ahí terminaba el proyecto, actualmente planeo con detenimiento que quiero expresar en una instrumental, ahora uso sintetizadores , los drums los creo yo mismo con sonidos grabados con el celular que después proceso en fl studio, trato de seccionar y transformar un sampleo en caso de ser requerido de forma que pueda crear un sonido único e irreconocible de cierta forma, en si la respuesta corta a esto sería que ahora pienso en que quiero transmitir a los escuchas al reproducir un track.

Sick Geek: ¿Te gusta escuchar música? tienes algún acercamiento o noción de que es lo que quisieras crear como sonido y mostrar a la gente? entonces mi consejo es que escuches bastante música del género que desees , investiga cómo se forma un sonido en específico, que lo compone y que lo descompone y experimenta con algún DAW yo uso fl studio desde hace algunos años , si tienes influencias musicales trata al inicio de igualar su sonido para que después vayas formando el tuyo y nada por último quiero agradecerte por entrevistarme y dar a conocer un poquito más de mi persona , de mis gustos y de la música que hago, no olviden en escuchar y seguir mi material en Spotify este año tengo que sacar bastante música así que por ahí se estará escuchando, gracias a todas las personas que me apoyan y un abrazo para todos

Sick Geek: Before I start, thanks for the invitation, my name is Hugo and my nickname is Sick Geek, I'm a beatmaker from the No Hype collective and if you want to talk about Ultraman, Godzilla, Kamen rider and weird sounds, I think you've met the indicated person. I think that each one can have different interpretations, an instrumental one can be taken as "I play this track because it makes me feel happy, sad, euphoric" here it depends a lot on what elements you use to convey said emotion, you can tell a story through sounds just like that a track with lyrics tells a story but the narrative leads you to know what it is about, in an instrumental you can have a thousand feelings every minute and more if it is a progressive instrumental and it envelops you with all its sounds.
And when it comes to elements that inspire your work, like what you mention in your introduction, what is your relationship with your collection of sofubi toys, how do these objects influence your creative process?
Sick Geek: Have you seen the studios of some producers and/or beatmakers? some have plants, some light incense, others light their humidifiers with lavender essences to concentrate and make music, well, in my case I like to have my figures close to me I want to believe that they are part of a small audience, obviously inanimate but when I am making music I like to have an ultraman, a godzilla etc to help me concentrate and create something "related to", such is the example of one of the beats from my past beat tape, "Urutora Sick Geek" was created as part of the strong start On the beat tape, when I believe that instrumental I had a figure of Ultraman (Urutoraman) near me, by the way an S/O to all my people from Sofubi gang MX.

Sick Geek: There is a little relevant personal information but I think it is a good time to make it known and that is that I perceive music with colors, this is called "chromesthesia" that has helped me a lot to know what I want to transmit , I usually associate blues, purples and grays when I'm making music with a sentimental tone, reds, yellows and oranges when I want something that sounds warm and loving and I think this "gift" so to speak is very helpful since I've had feedback from people who listen to me and make comments like “this track sounds very sad but nice or this instrumental brought me a lot of joy so I played it many times”
Within those nuances of colors and emotions that your works provoke in you, which vary so much depending on your state of mind before starting to produce, would you consider your music as the means to connect with yourself and with others or is it rather the catalyst?
Sick Geek: The music was made to enjoy to feel "that track represents me", "that instrumental makes me feel calm", each person reflects some feeling or some reason why they want to play a track so many times, to My yes, I create an instrumental with a warm mood and when listening to it another person makes comments such as "I felt that I was on a journey of tranquility and peace" for me that is already many points in my favor since I achieved the task, "transmit what I felt at that moment"
We have no doubt that music can be a means to explore and express personal identity and culture, to what degree does this lead to Sick Geek?
Sick Geek: I know beatmakers who use music sounds that they make in their region, that seems fantastic to me, I have discovered nationalities of people just by listening to their music, in a musical project that I was working on they asked me using specific flutes because they were from their region and the music they make there, I think it's a nice gesture since you continue to represent your roots and you want to show people what is done in the place where you live.
Once you have that cultural and above all personal identity, what is the next step? Inspiration is fundamental, but what kind of stories do you try to tell through your instrumentals?
Sick Geek: I always try to convey what I feel in the moment, I've never liked making beats to order, I like to imagine that a track I made with a specific feeling, be it anger, sadness, etc. can be used as soundtrack of someone's life, I have two beat tapes in which I tell different stories "Fruit tree" I wanted to convey and tell a story of affection with the people close to my life, Ryoko was created in order to feel that you are on a journey towards some destination and feel that freshness of breathing and filling your lungs to the full, going out and feeling free.
Technology has had a huge impact on the way music is created and consumed today. What do you think about paper in the music industry and how do you use it in your creative process?
Sick Geek: Technology has helped a lot in this whole process, I always believe, but now it is easy to download a vst and simulate the sound of an instrument even so without the need for you to really know how to play it, your ear and practice It is what helps you to simulate the sound of a violin and make it sound as if you were Paganini or some virtuoso musician, not at the same level but you will achieve fascinating results. Sick Geek: The first times I started sharing music was through sound cloud but I feel that it was not something as planned or detailed as now, before I uploaded music just to upload it and that my group of friends knew that I made music and my way of working was just listening to a loop of something that I liked, putting together drums and that's where the project ended, currently I plan carefully what I want to express in an instrumental, now I use synthesizers, I create the drums myself with sounds recorded with the cell phone which I then process in fl studio, I try to section and transform a sample if required so that I can create a unique and unrecognizable sound in a certain way, if the short answer to this would be that now I think about what I want to transmit to you hear them when playing a track.

Sick Geek: Do you like listening to music?
