Hello music lovers! πΆ
It's Friday, the first day of August, and after a few weeks' break, #newtunes is back with a selection of fresh music, just right for the hot, humid, and unpredictable summer that still lies ahead.
Well-known, lesser-known, and even unknown musicians offer us tunes for the weekend and beyond!
Who knows, maybe something is outstanding and worthy of your attention.
Eight songs of different genres. If you are interested in something fresh and have time, you can spend it listening to it. And if you like it, I will be happy to have shared it with you!
If you don't like something, skip it.

BIG SPECIAL - HUG A BASTARD
Big Special, the English duo I mentioned earlier. In early July, they released their second album, National Average, and became recognizable thanks to a similar duo, Sleaford Mods, who invited them to be their opening act. A time capsule that will tell future generations what the world and society were like in our time.
The song Hug A Bastard lists unfulfilled dreams, plans, and everything that should make the bastard from the title happy.
Dark, hypnotic funk, where more or less the exact words can also be used to describe resignation.
We Lost The Sea - Everything Here is Black and Blinding
We Lost The Sea is an instrumental Australian band from Sydney. They have been performing since 2010 and have released five albums to date, the latest being A Single Flower, which came out three weeks ago. Their experimental and instrumental post-rock will take you on an emotional journey from deep sadness to unbridled happiness and back again, through quiet, melodic valleys to loud and exciting peaks.
mclusky - people person
McClusky is a band from Bristol, UK. They were active between 1999 and 2005. They released three albums. After twenty years, they are back together again, and their fourth album, released in May this year, is titled The world is still here and so are we.
Their mix of noise rock, post-hardcore, punk, island slang, and black humor will win over many. It already has me.
Trivax - Atash
Trivax is an extreme metal band from Iran. They have been playing since 2014. They have released several EPs and three albums. Their latest, The Great Satan, was released at the end of May this year. Because they had to flee Iran under threat of death, they recorded for the London-based label Osmose Productions. Metal is strictly prohibited in Iran, mainly if its rebellious aspect is directly aimed at the ruling regime.
A new name for me, I will follow them further.
pl@ΕΎa - Za oblaki
A Slovenian duo from Ljubljana, Slovenia. At the end of June, they released their debut album entitled Hibrid. A punk, black metal, ethno, vaporwave, darkwave, and electronic mix of urban melancholy, rural determination, naive love, historical sediment, and digital anxiety. In short.
The song Za oblaki, in English Behind The Clouds, is a black metal, dreamy piece that unfolds like a dark view from a closed, rotten window with cracks.
Dunjaluk - DΕΎidΕΎa
Dunjaluk is a duo from Zagreb, Croatia, and since 2019, they have released two albums. The latest, Kamen Gori, was released in May this year.
They explore sevdah, a combination of voice and guitar, imbued with an inexpressible longing. Sevdah originates from Bosnian music and is a kind of medley of melodies from centuries past, when Bosnia changed power, religion, and migration. As a form of song, it is related to the Turkish expression for love, which is similar to the Arabic expression for black bile, while its transformation into Greek means melancholy.
DΕΎidΕΎa, as the song is called, means something attractive and shiny in Balkan languages, but is essentially worthless.
Unbelievable Lake - I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
We're almost done, just the after party, if you happen to be listening in the early hours of the morning.
Unbelievable Lake has been making music since 2017 and comes from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They have released four albums so far, the latest one with the same title as the song I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. They are very diverse in terms of genre, experimental psych, doom, and krautrock, even in a single song that lasts over 41 minutes, which is very brave. I mean, in today's crazy, fast-paced world, who is going to listen to such a long composition? Well, only the devoted, who take the time to do so.
The Velvet Sundown - Let It Burn
And finally, The Velvet Sundown, a band that doesn't exist. It is a project driven by human creativity, with AI composing, singing, and visualizing. They have three albums to date, the latest being Dust and Silence, released at the end of June. Their Spotify biography reads:
Their sound blends the textures of psychedelic and folk rock of the 70s, but effortlessly merges with contemporary structures of alt-pop and indie music. Shimmering tremolo guitars, warm tracks, and gentle organ swirls create a sense of history, without ever seeming forced.
Who can balance that, let alone artificial intelligence, you might say, but there is always that "but." That "but" says that artificial intelligence is still a tool in human hands. Whoever is behind the Velvet Sundown project has hit the niche very well. Perhaps we could say that artificial intelligence has no soul, but those who work with it do, at least in this case.
What now? The author says:
It's a mirror. A constant artistic provocation that challenges the boundaries of authorship, identity, and the future of music in the age of artificial intelligence.
Listen to the entire album and you'll understand what he's trying to say.
πΆThat's all for today, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
