Estaba buscando yo una manera de reflejar mi gran admiración por una banda de Rock cuya música exclama la verdad y la desazón. System of a Down es más que un grupo de músicos que intenta enloquecer a las masas, pues su crítica apunta directamente a estas conspiraciones metódicas que terminan (o terminarán) haciendo daño a los ojos del buen mundo. En las diversas proporciones del Heavy Metal, hay ritmos, sonidos y voces graves que no le gradan a cualquier persona. No obstante, con System of a Down no bebes preocuparte por eso, más bien pensar en cuestionar el sistema que rodea tu vida: esa decadencia material y mental que carcome, hiere y se expande.
Revivamos un poco de algunos éxitos de esta banda popular ya ausente en los escenarios, pero todavía presente incluso en las posibilidades de reencuentro. Abramos la caja musical y adentrémonos un poco en el pasado, ¡nos depara un mar de analogías y pensamientos metafóricos!
I was looking for a way to reflect my great admiration for a rock band whose music exclaims truth and dismay. System of a Down is more than a group of musicians trying to drive the masses mad, for their critique is aimed directly at these methodical conspiracies that end up (or will end up) harming the eyes of the good world. In the various proportions of Heavy Metal, there are serious rhythms, sounds, and vocals that don't just graduate to just anyone. However, with System of a Down, you don't have to worry about that but rather think about questioning the system that surrounds your life: that material and mental decadence that eats, hurts, and expands.
Let's relive some of the hits of this popular band already absent on stage, but still present even in the possibilities of reunion. Let's open the musical box and delve a little into the past, it offers us a sea of analogies and metaphorical thoughts!

MTV fue el canal de música que más me acercó a los movimientos musicales de occidente, pero, por raro que parezca, conocí a System of a Down gracias a un primo que es un amante del Rock y el Metal. Me pasó dos álbumes de la banda: Hypnotize y Memorize, con algunos sencillos incorporados. Al principio no me gustó, debo admitirlo. Sin embargo, reproduje todas las canciones hasta que hallé una que sí llamó mi atención: Toxicity. A pesar de que la letra es en inglés y yo hablo español, me atrajo la melodía de la guitarra, suave al principio, y luego viene esa explosión de la batería que uf, empina los vellos de mi piel.
Así fue como empecé a recomendar Toxicity a mis amigos. Estaba yo en secundaria y, para mi sorpresa, lo que más sonaba en la preparatoria era otra canción de la misma banda: “Chop Suey!”, conocida, en el dialecto españolizado, como: “IWACHU”. Ahí fue que me terminé enamorando del estilo de System of a Down y su manera de transmutar la imagen del rock, la cual era de mal gusto para muchos de los adolescentes.
No sé cómo pasó, ni cuando exactamente, pero de un día para el otro la secundaria se transformó en un mundo completo que giraba en torno a “System of a Down”, con canciones que ya tenían una buena cantidad de años en el aire. El fenómeno prosiguió por una larga temporada y fue hermoso, pues por un momento el todavía naciente reguetón dejó de tener protagonismo. Y aunque pocos conocíamos lo que significaban las canciones de esta banda, el estilo de la misma era tan hipnótico que nadie podía resistirse a este.
MTV was the music channel that brought me closer to Western music movements, but, oddly enough, I got to know System of a Down thanks to a cousin who is a Rock and Metal lover. He passed me two albums of the band: Hypnotize and Memorize, with some singles incorporated. At first, I didn't like it, I must admit. However, I played all the songs until I found one that did catch my attention: Toxicity. Even though the lyrics are in English and I speak Spanish, I was attracted to the guitar melody, soft at first, and then comes that explosion of drums that, makes the hairs on my skin stand on end.
That's how I started recommending Toxicity to my friends. I was in high school and, to my surprise, the most played song in high school was another song by the same band: "Chop Suey!", known, in the Spanish dialect, as: "IWACHU". It was there that I ended up falling in love with System of a Down's style and their way of transmuting the rock image, which was in bad taste for many teenagers.
I don't know how it happened, or when exactly, but from one day to the next, high school was transformed into a whole world revolving around "System of a Down", with songs that had already been on the air for a good number of years. The phenomenon went on for a long time and it was beautiful because for a moment the still nascent reggaeton was no longer in the spotlight. And although few of us knew what this band's songs meant, their style was so hypnotic that no one could resist it.
“Chop Suey!”, es una canción muy sensible, por cierto. Poco después de mi interés por analizar las letras de mis canciones favoritas, hallé un centenar de referencias bíblicas en la letra de esta exitosa pieza de la banda. No solo eso, pues el suicidio es otro de los temas predominantes, quizás metafórico o referencial, en una vida monótona y superficial. Familiarizarnos con ritmos es la solución primaria para aquellos que no hablamos inglés y debemos oír música en ese idioma. Sin embargo, sonidos felices no indican que la canción lo sea, pues la lírica es la que irá entonando el verdadero significado de lo que oímos.
Las canciones de “System of a Down”, en este sentido, suelen atacar los estándares de las sociedades más destructivas, de las élites de poder mundial y la encarnizada lucha por el dominio de la humanidad a costo de la miseria. Serj Tankian, el vocalista de la banda, suele estar implicado en movimientos sociales que promueven la libertad y la anti-globalización. Su carácter igualitario y antibélico, además, fomentan líricas que se rebelan contra el monopolio devastador. Que este grupo de rock emplee la música como forma de protesta pone en evidencia la gran influencia que el arte ejerce en el pensamiento y la acción.
"Chop Suey!" is a very sensitive song indeed. Shortly after my interest in analyzing the lyrics of my favorite songs, I found a hundred biblical references in the lyrics of this successful piece by the band. Not only that, but suicide is another predominant theme, perhaps metaphorical or referential, in a monotonous and superficial life. Familiarizing ourselves with rhythms is the primary solution for those of us who do not speak English and must listen to music in that language. However, happy sounds do not indicate that the song is happy because the lyric is the one that will be intoning the true meaning of what we hear.
The songs of "System of a Down", in this sense, usually attack the standards of the most destructive societies, of the elites of world power, and the fierce struggle for the domination of humanity at the cost of misery. Serj Tankian, the band's vocalist, is often involved in social movements that promote freedom and anti-globalization. Their egalitarian and anti-war character, moreover, encourages lyrics that rebel against the devastating monopoly. That this rock band uses music as a form of protest highlights the great influence that art exerts on thought and action.
La música puede ayudarte a abrir los ojos y cuestionar cosas, o quizás asentir con tu cabeza mientras estás de acuerdo con lo que esa voz entona. System of a Down es un ejemplo de ello, incluso podría decir yo que esta banda ha marcado la historia con su peculiar forma de mostrar, por ejemplo, las realidades de la guerra. Muchas canciones de este grupo de Rock demandan respuestas: Tentative, otra de mis favoritas, relata el mundo bajo el asecho del invierno nuclear. Parece que la humanidad está destinada a destrucción por el torpe narcisismo de algunos pocos. ¿Qué pasaría si hubiera más música que bombas? Ojalá el arte fuera una bandera de paz… ¿Podría serlo? No es algo que a los promotores de la guerra les guste.
Más allá de la realidad bélica, debo admitir que la música de System of a Down tiende a evocar lo que más oculta el sentimiento humano. En la canción “BYOB”, a diferencia de Tentative, hay una frase en el estribillo que es cruda y certera: “¿Por qué los presidentes no luchan sus guerras? ¿Por qué envían a los pobres?” Y no tiene una relación con lo monetario, sino con la inocencia. Los inocentes pelean las guerras de los nefastos. Es muy triste. Parte de estas reflexiones se encrespan en una lírica impactante, y que acierta en su crítica.
Music can help you open your eyes and question things, or perhaps nod your head while agreeing with what that voice intones. System of a Down is an example of this, I could even say that this band has marked history with its peculiar way of showing, for example, the realities of war. Many songs by this rock band demand answers: Tentative, another of my favorites, tells of the world under the threat of nuclear winter. It seems that humanity is destined for destruction by the clumsy narcissism of a few. What if there was more music than bombs? If only art were a banner of peace... Could it be? It's not something that war promoters like.
Beyond the reality of war, I must admit that System of a Down's music tends to evoke what is most hidden in human feeling. In the song "BYOB", unlike Tentative, there is a phrase in the chorus that is raw and accurate: "Why don't presidents fight their wars? Why do they send the poor?" And it has nothing to do with money, but with innocence. The innocent fight the wars of the nefarious. It is very sad. Part of these reflections are encrusted in a shocking lyric, and he is right in his critique.

Nowadays, the truthfulness in the songs of this rock band is very visible in an era full of wars, conflicts, and toxic interests.
