What does Dark Helmet have to do with the 1990's? Absolutely nothing. But yesterday it was confirmed that the movie Spaceballs 2 is going to happen 40 years after the original in 1987. It was close the 1990's though. The best part is that it appears that actor Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement to play his part of Dark Helmet. The best Star Wars and Darth Vader spoof is finally back returning to theatres in 2027!
In true Mel Brooks fashion, he announced the project himself, and it's hilarious.
And for those who somehow never had the joy of watching the first Spaceballs, here is an original trailer. It had some great actors and comedians including the late John Candy and Joan Rivers. However, Rick Moranis stole the show as Dark Helmet. He retired from acting after his wife died to take care of his children and only now is returning to acting to reprise his role of Dark Helmet.
It should be a lot of fun!
For those of you new to Nineties Friday, it's a fun weekly event where you can share just about anything from the 1990's. Your imagination really is the limit! First off a thank you to @geneeverett for starting and continuing to support the event. If you don't already participate feel free to jump in and make up your own post. Just use the tag #ninetiesfriday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @geneeverett . Generally one random lucky winner gets some HSBI units!
Married With Children
cartoonbrew.com
This classic sitcom ran for ten years, most of which were in the 1990's. The show revolved around the Bundy family, none of whom actually much like each other. Al is the ever unhappy and unsuccessful women's shoe salesman who's married to Peggy, who refuses to cook, clean, or work. The children Bud and Kelly for the most part hate each other, Kelly is beautiful but dumb, and Bud smart, short, and very unpopular.
It was a great show that kept you laughing. It been announced they are bringing the show back in cartoon form. They were going to do the show with the kids as adults, but due to Christina Applegate (Kelly) developing MS, she retired from screen acting. I hope it's as funny as the original, I still enjoy watching the re-runs!
And what would Nineties Friday be without some music from the decade?
Foo Fighters
I know I tend to share a lot of their music here on Friday's, but they're just such a good band. There's a reason they're rock legends, and it never wouldn't have happened without the tragic end of Nirvana. In 1994 Dave Grohl assembled a new band in Seattle, Washington and the music world quickly took notice with their first album released the next year. This is off the self titled debut album, "This Is A Call":
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Formed as a band in 1982 in Los Angeles, California these guys slowly build up a following locally and by the late 80's were becoming a well known act. However, they struggled with drug abuse leading to the death of their original guitarist Hillel Slovak to a heroine overdose. They cleaned up the drug habits and produced their biggest album yet in 1991 with Blood Sugar Sex Magik. There were multiple hits including "Suck My Kiss":
Weezer
Formed in 1992 in Los Angeles, California, they quickly found success with their self titled debut album in 1994. It produced several hit songs, but one of my favorites has always been "Buddy Holly":
AC/DC
This Australian legendary rock band formed 1973 in Sydney. After the death of their first singer Bon Scott, they picked up Brian Johnson as the new front man and shot to the top of the charts in 1980 with album Back in Black. Although many think of AC/DC as a 80's band, they continued the hits into the 1990's with one of their biggest hits in 1990, "Thunderstruck". It's also a huge money maker, the band charges $1 million to use the song in a movie, not a bad pay day!
I lived most of the 90's outside of the US in South America and in Spanish speaking Caribbean islands. I always like to include a hit from the decade in from Latin America or Spain.
Julieta Venegas
This singer/songwriter was born in Long Beach, California but grew up in Tijuana, Mexico. She plays seventeen different instruments and was in various bands before going solo and releasing her debut album Aquí (Here) in 1997. One of her biggest hits off the album was "De Mis Pasos" (From My Steps):
That will wrap up this week's Nineties Fridays fun. I hope you enjoyed my post today and please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thanks for all of your support, I greatly appreciate it! Have a great weekend everyone!
