Crusading in the name of Jazz!
No, they did not make it easy for someone who identified himself in public as a fan of their interpretation of jazz. Whether as Jazz Crusaders or as Crusaders in the studio, the result was not always easy to swallow for jazz enthusiasts. The thinner the musical porridge became, the heavier it felt in the stomach. But, and this probably explains my loyalty to this formation, just as they threatened to sink into shallow music, the Crusaders constantly re-invented themselves.
Nein, sie machten es jemandem, der sich in aller Öffentlichkeit als Fan ihrer Interpretation des Jazz zu erkennen gab, nicht leicht. Ob als Jazz Crusaders oder als Crusaders im Studio, das Resultat war für Jazz-Enthusiasten nicht immer leicht zu verdauen. Je dünner der musikalische Brei wurde, desto schwerer lag er im Magen. Doch, und damit ist wohl auch meine Treue zu dieser Formation zu erklären, so wie sie in der seichten Musik zu versinken drohten, erfanden die Crusaders sich immer wieder neu.
Comparable to their musical changes, the musicians also changed, with very few exceptions, on their different instruments. The basic members of the Jazz Crusaders were: Joe Sample (keyboards), Stix Hooper (drums), Wilton Felder (tenor saxophone) and Wayne Henderson (trombone). Initially, they toured Texas exclusively under the name The Modern Jatt Sextet. At that time, Henry Wilson (bass) and Hubert Laws (flute) joined the group. Immediately the name was changed again, and from then on, they described themselves as a show band called The Nighthawks. However, they could not really succeed musically with this concept. Name change no. 3 followed immediately.
Vergleichbar mit ihren musikalischen Veränderungen, wechselten auch die Musiker, mit ganz wenigen Ausnahmen, an den jeweiligen Instrumenten. Das Fundament für die Jazz-Crusaders bildeten: Joe Sample (Keyboards), Stix Hooper (Schlagzeug), Wilton Felder (Tenor-Saxophon) und Wayne Henderson (Posaune). Anfänglich ttourten sie noch unter dem namen The Modern Jatt-Sextett ausschließlich durch Texas. In jener Zeit stießen dann auch Henry Wilson (Bass) und Hubert Laws (Querflötte) zu der Formation. Sofort wurde erneut der Namen gewechselt und fortan bezeichnete man sich als Showband, die sich The Nighthawks nannten. So richtig musikalisch durchstarten konnten sie mit diesem Konzept jedoch nicht. Prompt folgte Namenänderung Nr. 3.
Starting in 1960, they performed as jazz crusaders on various stages in California and usually performed for little money. Possibly this was also the reason why Wilson and Laws left the band. Curtis Amy, the saxophonist, was a newcomer and was able to persuade the head of the record company Pacific Jazz Records to give the band a try. The record company was thrilled. The first record deal was accompanied with the release of the first album Freedom Sound, that sold a surprisingly high number of copies. Hardly on the tail of success, the Jazz Crusaders were dead and the Crusaders were born. After the abum Those Southern Nights, Henderson also left the band. However, the Crusaders could not compensate for this exit quite so easily. Barry Finnerty, the new man on guitar, caused the Crusaders' music to degenerate into laid-back jazz.
Ab 1960 standen sie als Jazz-Crusaders in Kalifornien auf den verschiedensten Bühnen und spielten meist für wenig Geld. Möglicherweise auch der Grund, weshalb Wilson und Laws die Band verleißen. Neu hinzu kam der Saxophonist Curtis Amy, der den Chef der Plattenfirma Pacific Jazz Records überreden konnte, sich die Band einmal anzuhören. Von Seiten der Plattenfirma war man begeistert. Mit dem ersten Plattenvertrag erschien auch das erste Album Freedom Sound, das sich in einer überraschend hohen Stückzahl verkaufte. Kaum dem Erfolg auf der Ferse, waren die Jazz-Crusaders tot und die Crusaders neu geboren. Nach dem Abum Those Southern Nights verließ auch Henderson die Band. Diesen Abgang konnten die Crusaders jedoch nicht ganz so einfach kompensieren. Barry Finnerty, der neue Mann an der Gitarre, sorgte dafür, dass die Musik der Crusaders zum Laid-Back-Jazz verkam.
With Street Life, a composition by Joe Sample and Will Jennings, the Crusaders once again turned musically everything upside down by asking the previously almost unknown Randy Crawford to add her voice to the band's music. Within a very short time, the Crusaders achieved a popularity they had never experienced before. It followed Soul Shadow with Bill Withers and I'm so glad, standing here today, which helped Joe Cocker to a huge comeback. The Way it Goes, sung by Nancy Wilson fitted in perfectly with the band's new style.
But the constant change at the instruments demanded its toll. With Healing Wounds the Crusaders finally said goodbye to their audience. A few more reunions, side projects and interludes followed - but it was nothing more than the public admission that their time had passed.
Mit Street Life, einer Komposition von Joe Sample und Will Jennings, stellten die Crusaders erneut musikalisch alles auf den Kopf, idem sie die bis dahin annähernd unbekannte Randy Crawford baten, ihre Stimme in die Musik der Band einzubringen. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit erreichten die Crusaders eine bisher nie erlebte Popularität. Es folgten Soul Shadow mit Bill Withers und I’m so glad, standing here today, welches Joe Cocker zu einem riesigen Comeback verhalf. The Way it goes, gesungen von Nancy Wilson passte sich perfekt dem neuen Stil der Band an.
Doch der ständige Wechsel an den Instrumenten forderte seien Tribut. Mit Healing Wounds verabschiedeten sich die Crusaders endgültig von ihrem Publikum. Es folgten zwar noch einige Reunions, Nebenprojekte und Zwischentöne - doch war es nicht mehr, als das öffentliche Eingeständnis, dass ihre Zeit verronnen war.
