Fue presentada por primera vez por la ex estrella infantil Mitzi Green en Babes in Arms que es una comedia musical sobre la mayoría de edad en 1937. La canción es de género Pop tradicional y ha transcendido hasta nuestros tiempos convirtiéndose en uno de los Iconos populares del Jazz. Fue publicada por la empresa Chappell and Co.

La primera vez que la escuche tendría unos 14 años y era interpretada por el trompetista Arturo Sandoval y el pianista Chucho Valdez. Me encantaba cuando los músicos lanzaban esa descarga centelleante de improvisación y se sentía un sentimiento romántico y nostálgico impreso en la canción. En la obra original, el personaje llamado Billie Smith le canta a Valentine "Val" LaMar. Luego el nombre se cambió para que coincidiera con la letra.

The first time I heard it, I was about 14 years old and it was performed by the trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and the pianist Chucho Valdez. En la letra se describe a Valentín de forma despectiva hacia su apariencia física, pero al final dice que no quiere que cambie, que la hace sonreír. La canción tiene un lenguaje neutro, y eso hace que sea de fácil interpretación para cualquier género. Me encanta cuando dice “Me haces reír con el corazón”. Este tema será interpretado por mí con la trompeta.

In the lyrics, Valentín is described in a derogatory way towards his physical appearance, but in the end, he says that he does not want him to change, that it makes him smile. The song has a neutral language, and that makes it easy to interpret for any genre. I love when he says “You make me laugh from the bottom of my heart”.
